These are some introductory notes for Smiles.

Overview

This program is easy to learn and easy to run.

The instructions are contained in a Help file which you can get to with
the click of a button. You can keep the instructions on the screen while
you learn how to use the program.

The program loads the items in your chosen file into cells. Clicking on a
cell will show you what it contains. You must match each cell with another
cell which contains its translation or equivalent. You can scramble the
contents of some or all of the cells for a greater challenge. You can also
adjust the time the cells are exposed.

When you are right you get rewarded with Smiles and music. Wonderful.

This program requires Windows 3.1, the True Type font option installed
and enabled, and an unzipping utility. If you have Windows 3.1 you can
run True Type fonts.

INSTALLATION

1. In order to install this program, open the File menu from Program Manager.
and Select Run. If the files are on a floppy, type the letter
of the drive that the floppy is in, a colon, and the word "Install", and
press Enter. If the files are on a hard disk directory, type the path,
a backslash and the word "Install" and press Enter. Or, run "Install.exe"
from File Manager

2. You can check if you have the True Type option enabled by
opening the Fonts program in the Control Panel group, clicking on the True
Type button and seeing if the enabled box is checked. If so, fine. If not,
check it, click the OK button and then restart windows.
You can also call up the Font program by running RussFont, a program
included with this package (see 3. below).

3. If you want to use the programs to study Russian, you must install a
Russian font, which is included. I have also included a program to help you
install the font, called RussFont.

4. If the Install program will not load everything, then put all of the
files into a directory of your choice except Smiles1.hlp, which goes in
you main Windows directory.

If you are still having trouble, call me at 510-644-2030.

SHAREWARE

This program is not free. It is Shareware. This means that you may try it
out before you decide whether or not to buy it. After you have tried it
out, if you intend to keep using it you must register it by sending $19.95
plus $1.75 for postage and supplies to

		         Cragmont Services Ltd.
		         1171 Cragmont Ave.
		         Berkeley, CA 94708

When you register you will receive a version of Smiles that lets you load
files you have created, Smiles files with approximately 3500 vocabulary
words and expressions (750  each for French, German, Italian and Spanish;
500 for Russian), more Smiles data files, a program, Go Learn It!, that
lets you create your own Smiles files, and with which lets you test
yourself by multiple choice and fill-in (and which has many nifty
options), and another game which you have not played before, and with
which you can waste time.

You may give the program to as many people as you wish. When you do so, you
must transfer all the files on the disk or in the .ZIP file. Each user
must send in the registration fee and costs unless they are members of the
same household or family as someone who has registered.

You can pay be check or charge the fees and costs to your Visa or
Mastercard. If you charge it, use the orderform (orderfrm.txt) or send me
your card number, card expiration date and signature.

I receive no other income from my programming. Equipment costs, supplies,
mailings and BBS upload time are all paid out of my pocket. Therefore, if
you use and enjoy the program, please send the registration fee.
