  First Time Installation
  =======================

Installing HyperMail! can be a long and confusing process if done
improperly. Although HyperMail! has been designed to be as user friendly as
possible, there is no substitute for reading the documentation; especially
if you're new to echo and NetMail. The best thing to do is to take your
time, and have the documentation handy when going through all of the
options. You may want to consider printing it out, or having it open in
another window if you are running a multi-tasking program.

If this is not your first time setting up a mail tosser/scanner, this should
  be fairly simple.

  Context-Sensitive Help
  ======================

A friendly context-sensitive help system has been added into the setup
program. When setting up Wildcat!, you will remember in Makewild the [F1]
help system. A similar help system has been provided in the setup program.
If you should get stuck somewhere while setting up HyperMail!, you may hit
[F1] at any option and a help screen will pop up.

You may press [F1] a second time to display a list of help topics you may
choose from. Simply highlight the bar on the desired topic and press
[ENTER] Once you've finished viewing the help information, you may press
[ESC] to return you to the previous configuration screen.

  HMSETUP - Setup and Configuration
  =================================

HMSETUP.EXE is the setup program used to configure HyperMail!, including
echos, nodes, and databases. The program should be executed from the
HyperMail! directory while HyperMail! is not processing mail.

Note: Hypermail setup procedure is one the easiest and simplest I have ever
worked with. So just follow my example step by step and you will be fine.

Before we begin, create the following directory on your desired drive, all
the examples in this documentation are using drive C:

  C:\HYPER
  C:\HYPER\SWAP
  C:\HYPER\IN-TEMP
  C:\HYPER\OUT-TEMP
  C:\HYPER\OUTECHO

Unarchive or decompress the HMAIL100.ARJ or HMAIL100.ZIP into C:\HYPER,
change to the directory C:\HYPER and type HMSETUP to begin our installation.
Specify the main directory to your Wildcat! v4.0 BBS when prompted, example
used in this documentation is C:\WC40.
Now you should see the above screen. Highlight the Global Configuration and
press enter key for next screen.

This are the listings of all your defined archives that Hypermail! is able to
found in your path directories. Make sure all your compressor/uncompressor
(archivers) are in directory specify in your AUTOEXEC.BAT path statement.
Hypermail! should already setup most common archivers as default for you
and seen above and you do not need to change anything in their command line.

As you can see above, this is the characteristics settings for the Group A:
and those settings above will be the default settings for any or each echo
area that you will henceforth create under that Network group, but of course
they can be changed or modify for each echo area as needed.

Comment or description: This is the full name or description for this Group.

Type of mail in this conference: This should always be echomail because all
the areas or conferences under this Group will be echomail conferences.

Is echo a passthrough area: Most of the time this option will be N for NO,
unless you a re a HUB that passes mails to other Nodes and you do not want
this particular Group imported into your own BBS conferences.

Address to use for this area: This should be your address that you will use
for this Network Group, in case of those that have multiple or other addresses
from their other Private Networks. If you press enter key on this option, a
list of all your defined Node addresses will pop-up for you to select the
appropriate address for this Network Group.

Origin Line: This will be the default origin line that will be used for this
Network Group. If you press enter key on this option, a list of all your
defined Origin Lines will pop-up for you to select the appropriate origin line
for this Network Group.

Seen-By Addresses: This should be your address that will be used for this
Network Group, in case of those that have multiple or other addresses from
their other Private Networks. If you press enter key on this option, a
list of all your defined Node addresses will pop-up for you to select the
appropriate address for this Network Group. Seen-By addresses is used by the
Mail tosser to see if the mail has arrived at your system once, so that it
will not be imported as duplicates, or just for the tosser to see which route
the mail has travelled before it arrived at your system. It's mostly used
to combat dupes and for debug purposes. This address should be as the same
selected for "Address to use for this area:" option.

All the other settings seen above should remain the way they are for this
Group and for other Echomail type of Network you may wish to define now or
in future.

This is where you will define and specify your Origin Line also known as
Origin Line that will be appended to the messages exported from your board.
You will need to define each Origin Line for each Network Group based on the
requirements from your appropriate Network. Although one universal Origin Line
can be used for multiple Networks if it meets each Network's requirements.
An example of my universal origin line is seen on line 7 above, I use this
origin line for my FidoNet Group and other Network that does not require me
to append their Network name to the beginning of this tagline. My Network
specific Origin Line for Afronet will read:
[AfroNet] * Systematic BBS, Bronx, NYC (718) 716-6198

You can delete the default origin lines on the first six lines created
automatically by Hypermail! as seen above and replace them with yours.
You should only put the information of your Network and BBS as seen above and
for my Afronet examples on your origin lines. Do not put your Node address
or your Network address on this origin line because Hypermail! will
automatically append your necessary Node address to the end of the origin line
when messages are exported from your BBS, if you add your Node address to this
origin line you will then have two Node addresses appended to your tagline
when the mails are exported from your board.

Keep your origin line simple, short and descriptive of your BBS.
Press F10 to save your settings.

Selecting Area manager option from the "Global Configuration" menu will give
you this sub-menu. Make sure you have all the settings as you see them above
for best results.
When you select "Uplink Configuration" at the end of this screen, a list of
all your defined Groups will appear to allow you to define your respective
Uplink (HUB) informations for the Area Manager.
Area Manager is mostly used by a HUB that will be passing mails to a Downlink
Node under it. See next two screens to come for the completion of this option.
If you are not a HUB or you don't intend to be a HUB, then this settings
should not concerned you, but set it as above anyway.

Here you will specify the characteristics of the "Uplink Configuration",
This settings here will be used by you if you are a HUB for other system
polling (calling) you for their mails and for the HUB you call for your own
mails.

Uplink Processor Name: This is usually one of the option AREAMGR or AREAFIX.
But the most commonly used by most system is AREAFIX.

Uplink Address: This will be the address for your own HUB that you will request
an echo area from, or so that if a downlink requests an echo that you don't
already have on your setup will be forwarded to that HUB for activation.

Your AKA: This is your address that you will use for this Group Area Manager.

Uplink Password: This is the AREAFIX password given to you by your HUB (Uplink)

Echo area List file: This is the file that list all the echomail area in that
specific Network Group. For Fidonet International Network, the file is
FIDONET.NA and FIDONET.NO, you can obtain latest of this file from your
NC (Network CoOrdinator, NEC (Network Echomail CoOrdinator) or any
FidoNet Member BBS in your area. I have included both files in this archive.

AREA CONFIGURATION:
===================

When you select "Area Configuration" from the Main Menu, you get this sub-menu.

This is where you will define each and all echo area that you will be
carrying on your board, with the matching conference created in Makewild of
Wildcat! BBS.

I have created two sample area here for you as an example namely: NETMAIL for
your Netmail Conference and WILDCAT for Fidonet Wildcat! Sysop Conference.

You should and MUST have only one NETMAIL area define. But you can have
several and as many as you desire in echomail conferences defined based on
the conferences you will be carrying on your board, just use the sample
WILDCAT echo that I have define here as an example in defining all your other
echomail areas, they should all be created the same way except for the
"Echo Area Name" that MUST be different and unique for each echo define
because all and each echo must use a different echo tagname.

As seen above, the figures to the left. e.g. 5 and 10 is your Wildcat! BBS
Conference Number as defined in makewild. And the letters to the right
e.g. WILDCAT is the name of the echo area as listed in your FIDONET.NA,
you will not see any area for NETMAIL in the list as this is our own created
area name.

Listings of all Fidonet echos are contained in a file called FIDONET.NA and
FIDONET.NO and are enclosed in this archive.

Now press INS key to create your sample areas.

When you press INS on the previous screen to define an area, you get this,
This is a sample of your Netmail area definition. Set all your settings as
seen above. You could use Group A but it does not really make any difference
here because that option is not being used for Netmail conference but something
should be there anyway. But just make sure you have "Type of Mail in this
Conference:" set to Netmail as seen above. Make sure you have the right
conference created in your Wildcat! BBS for Netmail matched as seen above,
this example is using conference #5 as Netmail Conference on my board.
Address and Seen-By Addresses should be your FidoNet address as seen above
and the Origin Line should be selected from your pre-defined Origin Line as
explained before, pressing enter on those options will pop-up a list of all
your defined addresses for you to select the appropriate one to use.

Important: In the option "Export Echo to:" should not have anything define
or toggle there, because you do not want to echo or export your Netmail
conference to any of your HUB or to other BBS, as this should only be a
Private conference on your board any Netmails you receive not echomails.
If you press enter on this option and a list of your HUBs or Nodes pop-up,
please do not select or toggle any of them for this Netmail area.
This option is used for Echomail type area only, see example on next page.

You should also set the option "Hide echo hidden in echo lists:" to Y for YES,
because you do not want any of your Node to send an AREAFIX message to you
for this area or even want them to know about it.

Note: You should and MUST only have one Netmail area and conference defined.

Press F10 to save.

Note: This is where you will spend most of your setup time in Hypermail!,
because you will need to create each area as seen above for the numbers of
echo areas you will be carrying or echo on your board. I mean if you will
echo 200 conferences on your board, you will create 200 conferences in
Makewild for Wildcat! BBS and you will have to create 200 areas here also,
each area for one echo conference and match each with your Wildcat! BBS
conference number. Everything will be explained in details as we move along.

When you press INS on the previous screen to define an area, you get this,
This is a sample of your Echomail area definition. Set all your settings as
seen above. You should use Group A because that is the Group we have defined
for Fidonet echomails at the beginning of this setup. You must match each
echomail area to it's respective and appropriate Group.

But just make sure you have "Type of Mail in this Conference:" is set to
Echomail as seen above. Make sure you have the right conference created
in your Wildcat! BBS for echomails matched each area as seen above, this
example is using conference #10 for FidoNet Wildcat! Conference on my board.

Address and Seen-By Addresses should be your appropriate address for this
Network as seen above, and the Origin Line should be selected from your
pre-defined Origin Line as explained before, pressing enter on those options
will pop-up a list of all your defined addresses for you to select the
appropriate one you want to use, see next pages for example screens.

Important: In the option "Export Echo to:" should have your HUB or Node
toggled, because you want to echo or export your Echomails conference to
your HUB or your downlink (Node). When you press enter on this option and
a list of your HUBs or Nodes will pop-up, please select or toggle any of them
that this echomail area should be exported to. If you have not created any
HUB or Node information you can leave this option alone for now and when you
go to Main Menu you can select "Node Configuration" to create or define all
your HUBs or Nodes information and then come back to this option to just
toggle the appropriate one or which of the HUB/Node you want this specific area
messages exported to. You must do this for all your defined echomail areas,
because if you do not select or toggle this option for any HUB/Node, then
none of your message will ever get exported out of your BBS or none of your
downlink will ever get any from you to pick-up. Better remember this option.

You should also set the option "Hide echo hidden in echo lists:" to N for NO,
because you want any of your downlink Node to be able send see this echo in
the list of echomail areas available to them so they can be able to send an
AREAFIX message to your system for this areas when they need to.

Note: You should and can have several Echomail areas and conferences defined,
based on your need, but each area defined must have a different echo
area name as seen in FIDONET.NA and different Wildcat! BBS conference
number as defined in your MAKEWILD.

A NOTE ABOUT DUPEMAIL and BADMAIL AREAS
                       =======================================

If for any reason you need to save any duplicates (dupes) echomail and or
bad echomails that arrives at your system for further investigation or
verifications, you will need to create or define each individual echo area
as we have define above previously for echomails, and the "Echo area name:"
will be DUPEMAIL nad BADMAIL respectively, and the option "Type of Mail in
this Conference:" should be set to DupeMail or BadMail respectively for any
of those two areas. Only each area of DUPEMAIL and BADMAIL should be created.

If you do not need any Dupemails and Badmails to be save and instead to be
trashed and deleted before mails are imported into your Wildcat! database,
then you should and MUST not create any of this area mentioned above.
Hypermail! will then delete and trash or discarded any dupemails (duplicate
messages) or any badmails (damaged or grundged messages) that might arrived
at your system instead of saving them.

I did not create any sample echo areas or show any examples for the above
two areas (DUPEMAIL & BADMAIL) because I don't think any Sysop will want to
import dupes or bad mails into their message database anyway, right?.
None of the two areas mentioned above is required as per explanation above,
and if you do not create them, then any message that is bad or duplicate
will be tossed away and deleted automatically without you seeing them at all.

I am just providing the above information for those who might need more
explanation on this subject or in case you need the option in future.
Look for reference to this explanation in a file included in your Hypermail!
archive called QUIKINST.DOC for more details or contact the authors.

When you select "Export echo to:" from previous menu this screen will pop-up
for you to select the appropriate HUB or Downlink Node address you want the
messages in this echomail area be exported to.
Just highlight the proper address from your pre-defined addresses and press
F10 key to accept and save it.

You should have your HUBs or Downlink Nodes toggled here, because you want
to echo or export your Echomails conference to your HUB or your downlink (Node).
If you have not created any HUB or Node information you will not see anything
listed here, you can leave this option alone for now and when you go to
Main Menu you can select "Node Configuration" to create or define all your HUBs
or Downlink Nodes information and then come back to this option to just
toggle the appropriate one or which of the HUB/Node you want this specific area
messages exported to. You must do this for all your defined echomail areas,
because if you do not select or toggle this option for any HUB/Node, then
none of your message will ever get exported out of your BBS or none of your
downlink will ever get any from you to pick-up. Better remember this option.

Press F10 to save your settings, and now let's go to the Main Menu and select
"Node Configuration" to define our HUB (Uplink) or Node (Uplink), but
sometimes both of them are just been referred to as Node.

NODE CONFIGURATION:
===================

When you select "Node Configuration" from Main Menu you get this pop-screen,
this is where you will need create or define your HUB or Node informations
and their characteristics. If you have not define any Node yet, then this
screen will be blank. You will press INS key here to create a Node information
as seen on the next screen.

Before we proceed, let me give you some definitions to make things clear.

HUB or UPLINK: This is where, system, or whom you will be getting all your
echomails from, and this will be the same person or system
you will be sending back your replies exported from your
                  board.

DOWNLINK or NODE: This is someone, system who will be picking-up mails from
your system for their own board, if you will act as a HUB.
All his replies will be uploaded to you and you in turn
will upload all his replies and yours to your Uplink or HUB.

Note: Sometimes or most of the time, the term Node is used commonly for both
Uplink and Downlink (HUB/NODE). And that is why you see this category
labelled Node Configuration. I hope my explanation is sufficient here..

When you press INS from the previous screen to define or create a HUB/Node
information you get this screen. Now let's go thru each option settings:

Netmail Address: This is the address for the HUB or the Node you are defining.
When you press enter on this option a little pop-up box will appear for you
to input the address as seen on next page.

Sysop Name: This is the name of the Sysop of that system for identification.

Your AKA to use with this node: This is your address that you will use for
this HUB or Node, if you have multiple address, press enter on that option
and a pop-up screen of lists of all your define address will be shown to
select the appropriate one for that HUB or Node as seen on next pages.

Netmail Flags: Should always be set to DIRECT for your HUB/Uplink, so that all
the mails exported will be send directly to your HUB when you poll (call)
his/her system.
But if this definition is for your Downlink or Node you should then set this
to HOLD, so that all that system mails will be put on Hold on your system
and when he/she poll (call) you, the mails will be released to him/her.

Default Archiver: Should be the compressor/uncompressor you will use for this
system. If you press enter key on that option, your lists of defined archivers
should pop-up for you to select the appropriate one to be used.

Default Mail packet Type: This is should and MUST always be set to TYPE 2+ for
conformity with other Mail Tossers.

Allow auto new area creation: Should always be Y so that if you request new
echo area it will be added to the Hypermail! database for you automatically
as Passthru, you will then go into the settings to to make it none passthru
in the Area Configuration section and the mails will then started importing
into your Wildcat! conference after you have also matched it to the
appropriate conferences.

Default group for new areas: Should be the Network Group you want to be the
default for this system so that each time you go to create or define an echo
area in Area Configuration for this system, it will be the default area in it.
Only one default area is allowed but you can change it on area to area basis.

Is this node passive (inactive): Should normally be N for NO. Unless you want
to temporarily disable this system, in that case it will be Y for YES.

Groups this node has access to: Should be the Network Group or Groups you want
this system to have access on your system. If you press enter on this option,
the lists of all your Groups already defined will pop-up for you to toggle the
appropriate Group or Groups this system belongs to. Remember you can have a
HUB or Node belongs to more than one Group, just toggle all the appropriate
Group for this system and all the toggled Groups should appear in that option.

This Node's security level: This is the security level you will assign to this
system. Just make sure the security level here is higher than the one in each
areas in Group definitions under "Minimum AreaMgr Security Level" option.
As you can see in our example, the security level seen above is 100 while the
one in Group Definition is 25. But each "Minimum AreaMgr Security Level" in
Area Configuration is 100 as taken from the above settings.
This option is used for security purposes for the HUBs and if you are not a
HUB, you should not have to worry about it much.

AreaMgr Password: This is the password you will give to your Downlink for
them to use it for requesting echo areas and changes to their settings
automatically on your system. This is used for your downlink only.

If you need to export your AREAS.BBS for some reason or purpose, just select
"Import/Export" option form the Main Menu and then select "Export AREAS.BBS"
and when you press enter key, your AREAS.BBS should have been exported and
placed in your Hypermail! directory e.g. C:\HYPER.

If you are also converting from another mail tosser and you already have your
exported AREAS.BBS exported from that Mail tosser, you can import your
AREAS.BBS into Hypermail and save yourself some typing works, but first you
need to define all the HUB or Node informations in "Node Configurations"
and also your Groups must be defined in "Group Definition" as previously
explained for the Nodes/HUB and Groups concerned and make sure the AREAS.BBS
is placed in Hypermail! directory e.g. C:\HYPER, you can then choose
"Import AREAS.BBS" option and press enter key and a pop-up screen of all your
Group Areas will appear for you to select which of the Group this importation
should affect and Hypermail! should be importing all your previous areas into
Hypermail! database.

When you select "Import AREAS.BBS" or "Export AREAS.BBS" option from the
previous screen, Hypermail! will prompt you to select the Group that this
AREAS.BBS importing or exporting should be affected. Select the desired Group
and press enter key and your AREAS.BBS should be importing or exporting
based on what option you have selected.

When finished with your setup procedures to test it, just change to your
Hypermail! directory e.g. C:\HYPER and type HYPER (no need for any command
line parameter) and if there is no error message, then you know your setup
is correct. If there is an error message, review your setup again and
correct your mistakes. Hypermail! will also create an ERROR.LOG file in
your Hypermail directory for your inspection and the cause for the error.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the conclusion of your HyperMail! setup.
This setup is relatively easy and straight forward compare to some other
mail tossers. Read the HyperMail! documentation for more details on each
options. I hope I have contributed well enough towards your FidoNet adventure.

Thanks to Tony Harrison of 1:2210/9639 and the authors of HyperMail! namely
Marc Limmany of 1:301/29 and Tom Morgan of 1:301/3 for their helpful hints
and contribution to this setup documentation.

God Bless. Praise be to Allah.
