APPENDIX C:
TIPS ON INSTALLING MICROSOFT WINDOWS
Installing Microsoft Windows without sighted assistance
can be difficult. The Windows interactive installation
program, called "SETUP.EXE", begins in a standard DOS
text mode readable by DOS screen readers. By the third
of six installer disks, however, Windows starts and the
screen can no longer be read by any DOS screen reader.
outSPOKEN cannot be used yet because Windows must be
completely installed before outSPOKEN can function.
Fortunately, SETUP.EXE allows the user to specify a
response file, eliminating the interactive prompts of
the setup program. Once all the user information has
been provided in this ASCII text file, SETUP.EXE can
install Windows, prompting only for the next installer
disk.
An example response file is provided on the outSPOKEN
disk. This file is called WINSETUP.SHH. If you have a
DOS screen reader and editor, we encourage you to
examine this text file to verify that its responses fit
your situation. An explanation for each response is
provided in the file itself. If you are not able to
edit this file, we have already specified the most
probable responses which will allow SETUP.EXE to
execute a complete Windows installation with minimal
user input.
To use the response file provided on your outSPOKEN
disk, place the disk in drive A and type the line shown
below. If drive A is the wrong type of drive, use drive
B, and use the letter B instead of the letter A in the
instructions that follow.
COPY A:\WINSETUP.SHH C:\
This copies the file from the outSPOKEN disk to the
hard drive. If you wish to edit the response file, you
should edit the file C:\WINSETUP.SHH.
Before installing Windows, verify that you have at
least seven megabytes of free space on your C drive,
and that Windows is not already installed on that
drive. This will avoid unexpected (and unreadable)
prompts from Windows SETUP. When you are ready to
install Windows, place disk one of the six Windows
disks in drive A and type the following:
A:SETUP /H C:\WINSETUP.SHH
This begins the Windows installation process and
specifies C:\WINSETUP.SHH as the response file.
Each time a new disk is needed, the computer beeps. At
this point, simply eject the disk in the drive, place
the next disk in the drive, and press oENTER. When the
installation is complete, restart your computer. You
are now ready to install outSPOKEN for Windows (Chapter
2).

Please Note:

Some of the parameters specified in WINSETUP.SHH
are as follows:
- User Name is specified as "outSPOKEN User".
You should modify this to specify your actual
name.
- Windows Directory is specified as
"C:\WINDOWS".
- Machine Type is specified as "IBM_COMPATIBLE".
- Display Type is specified as "VGA".
- Keyboard is specified as standard.
