USER'S MANUAL TO AVOID ANY LOSS OF DATA OR FAILED FUNCTION.

                          !!! I M P O R T A N T !!!

THIS PROGRAM IS A PRODUCT FOR PROFESSIONALS. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO
USE THIS SOFTWARE ONLY IF YOU ARE AN ADVANCED DOS USER AND KNOW
THE BASICS OF COMMAND LINE FILE HANDLING UNDER TRUE DOS.
AS THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS TO INCREASE SPEED BY DISABLING PROMPTS,
THIS PRODUCT IS JUST TOO DANGEROUS TO BE USED BY BEGINNERS.

      1. How AFP works
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
AFP has a TWO TREE DISPLAY (SOURCE TREE and TARGET TREE).
You are free to select any directory, on any drive, to show the
contents on one or both tree displays. From within a tree display,
you select file<s> and directory<ies> to work and choose a command
to be processed on the selected entry<ies>. The source tree is always
the one where the highlight bar is. Moving the highlight bar to the
opposite tree means switching source and target. If a command
requires a target specification, the current target tree is the
default. In other words: By choosing a target tree you select the
destination for a file activity such as COPY, MOVE etc.
Even though this sounds a little confusing, I'm sure you will find
it very useful after a while.

While most commands effect the source directory only (such as
<D>elete, <V>iew etc.), others affect the target directory (such
as <C>opy etc.), or both (such as M<o>ve etc.).
Make sure that you have defined the target before you select a
command that will affect the target directory.

NOTE: Those commands that affect the target directory appear
            in <LightRed>.

      2. Installation
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
By running the AFP3xx.EXE file, you have already decompressed the
AFP package. You will now find the following files:

README.1ST - Very important information. Read this FIRST !
This file includes detailed info on system
                   requirements and system settings.
      README.GER - README.1ST (German)
AERROR.HLP - This error list is required to display detailed
                   error messages.
AFP.CFG - This is the configuration file of AFP for you
                   to define default settings.
AFP.COL - This color file (user defined colors) will be used
if you define "BACKGROUND COLOR = -1" in AFP.CFG.
Feel free to change the colors for a personal color
palette. The default colors are defined for using
                   notebooks or monochrome monitors.
      AFP.EXE - Executable file.
AFP.ICO - Windows ICON for AFP. Combine the AFP.PIF file
with this ICON to run AFP under Windows.
      AFP.TXT - This manual.
      AFP.GER - German manual.
AFP.PIF - Windows PIF file for AFP.
Make sure you have the right PATH to AFP.EXE
                   in this .PIF file.

Even though you are free to choose any name for your directories
it is recommended to use a subdirectory of a directory named ATEC
      to store the files: C:\ATEC\AFP
You will find this recommended directory as the default within
      this manual.

      3. Configuration
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
AFP.CFG is the configuartion file used by AFP.
It has a certain form and style that may not be changed. In generell
a given description is followed by an equal sign, which is followed
by a parameter. The parameter column is the one you may change.
During an AFP session you can always change the configuartion by
selecting the Confi<g> button. But before you start running AFP you
should make sure that the "Standard editor" is set correct. Choose
an editor you like and change this line in the AFP.CFG file.

      4. AFP.CFG
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Before you start working with AFP, check/change the AFP.CFG file:
(use your favorite ASCII EDITOR to edit the AFP.CFG file)

      - Screen saver [0..3600 sec.] = 300
0 turns off the screen saver; any other value is time, in seconds,
before the screen gets blanked after no keyboard activity.

      - Mouse support = ON
Turn OFF if no mouse is required or used.

      - Screen background color [-1..5] = 1
        -1 = User defined colors (see AFP.COL)
         0 = Black background
         1 = White background
         2 = Blue background
         3 =  Light Gray background
         4 = Gray background
         5 = Black background
NOTE: If you choose -1, AFP will read the AFP.COL to use your
preselected colors. You are free to change the color
settings in AFP.COL, to create your personal palette,
              with your favorite colors.

      - Auto unselect = ON
Turn OFF if you like entries to stay selected after an action.

      - Smooth scroll = OFF
        Overwrite screen instead of clearing the screen;
Smooth scroll is a little slower but therefore it is more smooth.

      - Prompt before quit = OFF

      - Standard editor =
        Select your favorite editor here.
Leave blank for ATEC internal editor.

      - Standard viewer =
Select your favorite text viewer here; OR
        Leave blank for internal viewer.

      - Overwrite warning [-1:OFF; 0:Newer; 1:ON] = 1
        With this option set to:
-1: you will not be prompted before AFP overwrites a file.
0: you will only be prompted if a newer file will be overwritten.
1: you will always be prompted before AFP overwrites a file.

      - Prompt before action [OFF:Danger!] = ON
With this option enabled, you will be prompted for you to
OK (confirm) your choice, before launching a command.

      - Display any action [OFF:Fast] = ON
With this option enabled, you will see any file activity
on the main screen; otherwise, you will only see information
        in the status line.

      - Secure DELETE [OFF:Fast] = OFF
If you turn this option ON, files will be overwritten with
nonsense characters before they get deleted.
NOTE: You should only turn on this option, temporarily, as
it will dramatically reduce the performance of the
              deleting files.

      - Check free disk space before COPY = ON
With this option ON, AFP will check the disk space on
the target drive before a copy command will be processed.
NOTE: This will prevent you from copying files, watching the
progress bar and getting an #39 error message before
              the copy command is complete.

      - Keep file attributes with COPY = ON
If you turn this option OFF, AFP will set the time and date
of copied files to the current day -- instead of using the
        original file time/date.

      - Show error description [OFF: Fast] = ON
With this option ON, you will get an error description
instead of a simple error number, if any error occurs.

      - Transfer COM port [0..4] = 0
Define the COM port for null modem file transfer.
NOTE: If you have no null modem cable, set this
              value to "0".

      - Baud rate (SEND) [1200..9600..115000] = 38400
Baud rate for sending files to remote PC.
NOTE: Must be same rate as the RECEIVE rate on the remote PC.

      - Baud rate (RECEIVE) [1200..9600..115000] = 19200
Baud rate for receiving files to remote PC.
NOTE: Must be same rate as the SEND rate on the remote PC.

      - Use internal ZIP feature (V2.0) = ON
Use internal PKZIP V2 instead of external PKZIP.

      - Hexedit in int. viewer [ON: Danger!] = ON
Supports changing bytes in BINARY display of internal viewer.
        Please use with EXTREME CAUTION!

      - ASU V7.0 dir. (ACD.EXE) = C:\ATEC\ASU
        Directory of ATEC-Software-Utilities V7 (ASU).
NOTE: AFP will use the ACD-x.LOG files of ACD.EXE, if any.
NOTE: If you do not have the ASU package - order it !<g>, no,
seriously, leave this line blank. For information on the
ASU programs, please contact the author at CIS 100024,1436.

By default, AFP use the standard editor and standard viewer to
<E>dit and <V>iew files. However you can force AFP to use
different editors and viewers with specific file extensions:

      +-------+-----------+-----------+
        Ext Editor Viewer
      +-------+-----------+-----------+
        .FAX  =           = ZVIEW
        .TGA  =           = SVGA
        .TIF  =           = SVGA
        .PCX  =           = SVGA
        .BMP  =           = SVGA
        .JPG  =           = CSHOW

EXP: If you <E>dit a .FAX file, AFP will try to use the
standard editor, but if you <V>iew the file, AFP will call
           ZVIEW to display it.
NOTE: In this case, ZVIEW must be an external command.

      5. Getting started, finally<g>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      Run AFP.EXE

      BETA VERSION:
The first thing you will see is the "BETA advice" screen.
After a 3 second delay (or keypress), AFP will load.

      COMMERCIAL VERSION:
        - If you have not yet created an ID file, you will get the
"ID input" screen. Enter your USER NAME and USER ID so that
AFP can create a new ID file. (You will get your AFP ID with
          your purchased copy of AFP).
        - If you have already created an ID file, AFP will load.

      6. Main screen
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------

The main screen is the control center and the heart of AFP.
Some parts of AFP will run in text mode (special external
commands, internal editor and viewer) but you will always return
      to the graphic mode afterwards.
AFP is a real WYSIWYG application <g>. There is no pull-down-menu.
All you can do is, What You See on the screen. In other words:
AFP will be controlled from within this main screen by using the
button line commands. If there is a status or error message, it
will appear in the status line until you press the next key.
For user prompts, there will be no additional windows on the
screen - simply answer the questions in the prompt line.

While the headline and footline stay fixed --except Date/Time--
everything else can change depending on the current action.
The main screen and the status line show the current action.

      6.1. Scrolling and selecting entries
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can control the main screen with your <mouse> or your <cursor
      block>.
      SEE: README.1ST for key description.

To select an entry, move the highlight bar to an entry and press
<SPACE>. The color of this entry will change to <Green>. Press
<SPACE> again and the entry gets <U>nselected. If you do not select
an entry, but choose an action from the button line, the current
entry (highlight bar) will be the default.

With your <mouse>, you can use the scroll bar in the middle of the
main screen to scroll page by page. If you press the <left mouse
button> while the <mouse cursor> is above the middle of the scroll
bar, the display will scroll one page up; if the <mouse cursor> is
below the middle, the display will scroll one page down.
If you press the <left mouse button> while the <mouse cursor> is on
top of an entry, this will <S>elect or <U>nselect this entry.

      6.2. Button Line
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
While the <White> and <LightRed> buttons represent actions on
selected entries, the <Yellow> buttons represent independent
actions. If you do not select an entry but choose a <White>
button, the current entry (highlight bar) will be the default.
You can select a button by pressing the <key> --highlighted <Green>--
or by choosing a button with your <left mouse button>.

      6.3. Changing trees and directories
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Changing trees and directories is one of the most powerful features
in AFP. Now, you really gain control of this program!
To toggle source and target drive, press <TAB> or use the <cursor
left> and <cursor right> keys to move the highlight bar.
Within the directory structure, <.> brings you to the parent
directory and <\> brings you to the root directory, while <RETURN>
or <right mouse button> on a directory entry takes you into that
directory. The ".." within a directory equals the parent directory.
So, if you select ".." and press <RETURN> or <right mouse button>
you will also get to the parent directory.

      7. Buttons
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      7.1. P<a>ck
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
With this command, you add selected files to a compressed file in
the target directory. You will be prompted to select one of the
following compression techniques: .ZIP, .ARJ, .ARC, .LZH or .RAR
and for a new filename (automatic extension).
NOTE: While .ZIP is support by the internal PKZIP V2 of AFP you
will need the other compression tools as external executable
            commands.

      7.2. Attri<b>utes
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes file attributes of selected files and directories.
If you have selected more than one entry you will be prompted for
"Step by step action". If you enter <N>o, the new attribute setting
will effect all selected entries. Otherwise you will be prompted
for new attributes on each selected entry.
      The attribute shortcuts are:
      A = Archive, H=Hidden, R=Read only and S=System.
Lower case will turn off, upper case will turn on attributes.
EXP: If the current attribute is "A", and you select "R", the
           new attribute will be "AR".
EXP: If the current attribute is "A", and you select "aSH", the
           new attribute will be "SH".

      7.3. <C>opy
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
<C>opy file(s) to the target directory.
NOTE: This command will also work on write protected files.

      7.4. <D>elete
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      <D>elete file(s).
NOTE: If files are write protected you will have to use
Attri<b>utes "r" before you can delete them.

      7.5. <E>dit
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
<E>dit the file, using the internal or calling an external editor.
SEE: AFP.CFG for further info on default extensions.

      7.6. <F>ormat
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      Select a drive <A> or <B>, the capacity (360k, 1200k, 720k, 1440k),
and if you want to verify the disk after formatting. Enter a label
or leave it blank and AFP will format the disk.
NOTE: There will be no SYSTEM TRANSFER after formatting!

      7.7. Confi<g>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Within AFP you can change the configuration. Simply choose Confi<g>
and AFP will call the standard editor with your AFP.CFG file.
Returning to AFP, the new settings will be active immediately.

      7.8. S<h>ell
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Shell to DOS. Type "EXIT" to return to AFP.
NOTE: AFP will try to free up as much memory as possible for
the child process. SEE: README.1ST for further info.

      7.9. Dr<i>ve
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Change current drive. AFP will give you the chance to select
any existing drive up to the drive ID specfied by the LASTDRIVE
      statement in your CONFIG.SYS.
NOTE: Once you have selected a hard drive, you can not select this
drive again on the same tree. However, removable disks can
be selected again, to force a rescan.

      7.10. <J>ump
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jump to a specific directory on source drive (wildcards supported).
NOTE: Works only on the current drive.
NOTE: Uses and creates ACD-x.LOG files
(set ASU directory in AFP.CFG; SEE: AFP.CFG)
EXP: If you enter "AMA*" with an existing "\ATEC\AMAIL" directory,
AFP will jump to "x:\ATEC\AMAIL" - if this is the first
           entry found.

      7.11. Unpac<k>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is one of the most powerful commands in AFP. With this
command you simply unpack compressed files into automatically
created subdirectories in the target directory. The name of
the newly created directories will be set automatically, based
on the name of the compressed file. Afterwards you can jump into
the new directory and check the file contents. <R>ename or m<O>ve
(DirMo<->) the new directory as you like.
NOTE: This feature was designed to check newly received
            shareware packages.
SEE: P<a>ck for supported compression techniques.

      7.12. Unde<l>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Call the external UNDELETE command (coming with DOS). You must have this
feature enabled in your boot process, for it to work effectively!

      7.13. <M>ake
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Make a new directory in the source directory and jump there.

      7.14. Re<n>ame
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Change file and directory names. If you have selected more than
one entry you will be prompted for "Step by step action".
If you enter <N>o, the new file name (uses wildcards) will affect
all selected entries. Otherwise you will be prompted for new
      name on each selected entry.
EXP: If you have selected "AFP.ICO" and "AFP.PIF" and you answer
<N>o on the "Step by step action" prompt and "TEST.*" as
the new file name. The files will be renamed to "TEST.ICO"
           and "TEST.PIF".

      7.15. <M>ove
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
This will copy a file from the source directory to the target
directory and then delete the original file.
NOTE: If source and target directory are on the same drive,
<M>ove will work in light speed !<g>

      7.16. <P>rint
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Send a copy of a plain text file to your printer.
NOTE: Using standard form feed after each file (#12).
NOTE: With installed DOS print spooler (PRINT.COM) AFP
will copy the file to the spooler for background
            printing.

      7.17. <Q>uit
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      End your AFP session.
NOTE: If you do not want to be prompted before you Quit,
change the settings in your AFP.CFG !

      7.18. <R>emove
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is another powerful command - but it is VERY DANGEROUS.
With this command, you can remove directories, including their
subdirectories and subfiles - with a single keystroke.
Even if you will be prompted to confirm the deleting of the
selected directories, you will NOT be prompted for confirmation
on subdirectories or subfiles. Again, use with EXTREME CAUTION!

      7.19. <S>elect
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
<S>elect all entries matching a specific file specification.
EXP: If you enter "*.EXE" all .EXE file will be selected.

      7.20. Sor<t>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Make a backup and then sort the file on the source directory.
      NOTE: Only plain text files.

      7.21. <U>nsel
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      To unselect all selected entries.

      7.22. <V>iew
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
AFP will either use the internal viewers or call a pre-defined
      external viewer to display files.
      SEE: AFP.CFG
      NOTE: The internal viewer will:
            - Display text files on a text mode screen
            - Display binary files on a graphical screen
            - Show .GIF files
            - Play .FLI and .WAV files
            - View the contents of compressed files
SEE: See P<a>ck for further info.

      7.23. <W>here
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
AFP will try to locate a file that matches the file specification
on the source drive and will jump to the related directory.
NOTE: Scanning can take a while ...
EXP: If you enter "AFP.EXE", with AFP in the directory "x:\ATEC\AFP"
AFP will jump to the file "AFP.EXE" in the "x:\ATEC\AFP"
directory - if this is the first found.

      7.24. E<x>ec
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Execute files (.BAT, .EXE and .COM). This will e<X>ecute the highlighted
      file, if possible.
SEE: README.1ST for further information on subprocesses.

      7.25. Add<*>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Add/Append selected files to a specific file in target directory.
With this command you can combine multiple plain text files in the
source directory into one file on the target directory.
If you enter the name of existing file on the target directory,
AFP will open that file to append - so that you won't lose the
      original contents of that file.
      NOTE: Only plain text files.

      7.26. Dir Copy<+>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is another powerful command. With this command you can copy
complete directories including their subdirectories and subfiles.
A new directory with the same structure will be created in the
      target directory.

      7.27. Dir Move<->
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is another powerful command. With this command you can move
complete directories including their subdirectories and subfiles.
A new directory with the same structure will be created in the
target directory while the original directory will be removed.
NOTE: If there are write protected subfiles in the source
directory, this command will not complete.

      7.28. To=From
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Set source and target directory to the same directory.
EXP: If you want to Unpac<k> a file into its own directory, use
the key. This way, Unpac<k> will create the new directory
           in the source directory.

      7.29. Display <#>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Toggle the display mode of file time/date.

      7.30. Info <?>
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Check drive capacities of available drives and display additional
      system information.

      8. Prompts
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      8.1. Standard prompt
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to clear the line on a standard prompt, press <ESC>.
If you press <ESC> twice, this will quit the action.
      <RETURN> will confirm.

      8.2. Character prompt
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
The character prompt is a prompt line waiting for a single
keystroke. You will find highlighted characters for possible
choices and a pre-selected <Green> character as the default
choice. While <RETURN> selects the default choice, <ESC>
(if available) will cancel the pending action.
The cursor <left> and <right> keys will cycle the default
character - so does moving the <mouse>.
Pressing the <left mouse button> will also select the default
      character (=<RETURN>).

      9. Internal viewer
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is not much to say about the viewer handling. The text mode
viewer is actually a limited editor - using the same keys (except
those that would change the file). Check the README.1ST file for
a description of supported cursor keys.
Press <ESC> or <RightMouse> to leave the viewer.

      10. Internal editor
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a list of the supported keys of the internal editor:
      (See README.1ST for cursor keys)

      Ctrl-Left : Word left
      Ctrl-Right : Word right
      Ctrl-Y : Delete line

Ctrl-QA : Search and replace text
      Ctrl-QY : Delete to EOF
      Ctrl-L : Search again
      Ctrl-OW : Toggle word wrap

      11. Cancel action
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
When you start an action, AFP will either display every single
file activity or at least show you a status line. In that case,
you can usually stop the process by pressing the <ESC>. In that
CASE, AFP should complete the current file activity and then
stop the batch of pending actions.
