For N.J.A.
----------

We have faithfully
refused to call what we have
poetry, when the
soldier-poet has christened,
the fall of masonry,
christened the fall of building,
christened the splash of,
church towers into
dispassionate city streets,
inspiration.

My voice
even when it
speaks your name
will still only be as ugly
as war.
