In a 1993 nationwide poll, almost 20% of 17,500 eighth graders said
they had inhaled some form of household product such as glue, solvent,
or aerosols.

Many of these products contain toxic chemicals that are quickly absor-
bed into the blood stream and travel straight to the brain. When in-
tentionally inhaled, the chemicals give their user a temporary high.
Unfortunately, the effect is unpredictable; a single episode could
trigger asphyxiation or cardiac arrhythmia, leading to disability or
death. Chronic abuse can also cause irreparable brain damage. In
addition, abusers may develop problems with coordination.
