The following file contains a listing of genealogical and historical
societies in Tennessee. Included in the listing, where known, are telephone
numbers and yearly dues. This listing is donated to the public domain and
may be freely copied. Under no conditions can this listing be sold or used
in any other commercial fashion. If you think this list has any value, then
donate that value in helping your local genealogical society (or the National
Genealogical Society).

If you write to any of the societies on this list for information, remember

                       VITAL RECORDS

State Records of Births and Deaths

Statewide registration of vital statistics began in 1914 and was generally
complied with by 1927. You can obtain copies of birth records since 1908 and
death records since 1936 by writing to:

        Division of Vital Records
State Department of Health and Environment
        Cordell Hull Building
        Nashville, TN 37219

State your relationship to the individual you want information about and the
reason you want the information.

City and County Records of Births and Deaths

Most counties kept birth and death records beginning in 1908. These have been
consolidated into a statewide collection available at the Tennessee State
Library and Archives. Some counties have birth and death records for
various years ranging from 1881 to 1930. Many of these are on film at the
Family History Library, or you can write to the county for information.

Some pre-1913 records exist for Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and
Memphis. All of these records except for Memphis can be obtained by writing
to the Division of Vital Records in Nashville. For records from Memphis write
to:

        Shelby County Health Department
        Division of Vital Records
        814 Jefferson Street
        Memphis, TN 38105

Delayed registration of births for those born in the state before 1914 are
found in county offices.

Marriage Records

Statewide registration of marriages began in 1945. The Family History Library
does not have copies of these records. You can obtain copies by writing to
the State Division of Vital Records. Before statewide registration of
marriages, individual counties recorded marriages.

Divorce Records

Divorce proceedings are usually kept by the circuit court in each county.
