The Sacramento Family History Center is a private library
owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
and is located in northeast Sacramento near Carmichael. It
is opened to the general public during its regularly sched-
uled hours. Although intended for church members who wish to
abide by the commandment to search out their ancestors, most
of the guests at the center are not members and are most wel-
come. The center is a multi-regional facility serving church
members in the metropolitan Sacramento area.

Our Family History Center had its beginnings in 1962 when
some local church members and zealous genealogists, wanted to
provide church members with a library that would assist them
in achieving thegir genealogical goals. A number of LDS gen-
ealogists from all over the area eagerly added their efforts
to make the library a success.

The center is a reference library, and its books and micro-
forms do not leave the premises. The center is affiliated
with the huge Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

       CONTENTS OF THE CENTER

There are over 8500 volumes in the "book collection". They range
from family histories through dictionaries, how-to-do-it books
and helps, major reference works in American and foreign (mostly
European) genealogy, U.S. federal census indexes, local histories,
printed parish registers, and other typical archival records. The
library is small when compared to the usual public library, but
it is the largest genealogical collection in the area.

Even more research is done with our microfilms, currently over
9000 rolls. There is the 1850 and the 1880 U.S. Census schedules
in their entirety and portions of the 1790 through 1910. The
entire 1790 census is in book form and is on the shelves. The com-
plete card catelog (on microfiche) of Salt Lake City's vast Family
History Department is also there. Most of the microfilms in the
library in Salt Lake City may be ordered through us for a handling
fee. The Family History Center microfilms may be identified in our
card catelog and in the microfilm registers. The church's Four
Generation program (1965-1979) collection is in the library as well.

Ancestral names that have been processed through the LDS temples are
found in the International Genealogical Index (IGI), a "microfiche"
collection containing over 100 million names. Church members and
non-members alike find it a great source of information.
The "Pedigree File" is a collection of several thousand names sub-
mitted by local residents over the years that is worth examining.

To give you further research help the church in Salt Lake City has
provided the "Family Registry". It is a system whereby people work-
ing on a give ancestral line may be put in touch with others on the
same line. this is available at the center on microfiche.

Library users have frequently checked the A.I.S. census indexes
(1800-1850) before wading through a census microfilm. Now a combined
list of all the names in these indexes is found in our
"A.I.S. Database" on microfiche. It will be found to be very helpful.

We have a catalog of Salt Lake's Family History Library on micro-
fiche....the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC). The FHLC covers
the entire holding of the Salt Lake Family History Library.

Microfilm and microfiche readers are available for use. When the
library gets crowded a time restriction is enforced to ensure fair
use of the readers. You must sign up for a reader each time you use
       microfilm or microfiche.
