                      MONOPOLY CD-ROM Troubleshooting

The following information should help you with any difficulties you may
experience installing or running MONOPOLY CD-ROM PC. Virgin Product Support
makes reasonable efforts to ensure that the information contained within
this document is accurate. However, Virgin makes no warranty, either
express or implied, as to the accuracy, effectiveness, or completeness of
the information contained in this documentation.

Note: This is a preliminary document, and will be revised as additional
troubleshooting information becomes available.

System Requirements:

   * IBM 486/33Mhz or 100% compatible PC
   * 8MB of RAM
   * Windows 3.1+, Windows 95
   * Minimum 640x480 display w/256 colors
   * Minimum 10MB non-compressed space
   * Double speed CD-ROM drive
   * Sound card highly recommended
   * Multi-player Internet play requires a PPP or SLIP connection to an
     Internet provider

                         Installation Difficulties

Installation Instructions, Windows 3.x

   * Start Windows
   * Insert MONOPOLY into CD-ROM drive
   * In Program Manager select FILE menu and select RUN
   * Type "D:\SETUP" (Replace D: with the actual letter of your CD-ROM
     drive)
   * Follow additional on-screen instructions

Installation Instructions, Windows 95

   * Start Windows
   * Insert MONOPOLY into CD-ROM drive
   * From the START menu, choose RUN
   * Type "D:\SETUP" (Replace D: with the actual letter of CD-ROM drive)
   * Follow additional on-screen instructions
   * Make sure to deselect WinG and Win32s at the setup screen, as these
     options are not required for Windows 95 play

Problems installing WinG

   * Upgrade display driver
   * Early drivers for Diamond Viper cards included a "Power Palette"
     option no longer supported by Diamond. Upgrade drivers if you have
     this option. WinG may be slower when power palette is enabled
   * There are some problems using WinG with the ThinkPad 720c display
     drivers. IBM no longer supports the IBM ThinkPad 720c. As a result,
     there may be no solution for 720c users.
   * Cirrus Logic drivers earlier than version 1.43 have many known bugs
     which have been fixed in newer revisins. Be sure to upgrade your
     drivers if you are still running with early versions
   * Some ATI drivers offer a "Crystal Fonts" option. Turning Crystal Fonts
     on in 8-bit modes sets up a non-palletized driver that can slow WinG
     significantly
   * The ATI "Mach8 Radical" drivers cause a number of problems in both
     WinG and in Windows with some versions of the ATI chipset
   * The ATI VGA Wonder drivers (W31-*.drv) will crash during the display
     profile. Users can run the SVGA256.DRV driver that shipped with
     Windows (the generic 640x480 @ 256 color SVGA driver)
   * Many Miro Crystal drivers have problems with StretchDIBits, so they
     crash during profiling
   * Early ATI Mach 32 PCI cards have a hardware timing problem and will
     hang while performing certain operations. ATI will typically replace
     these cards at no cost
   * WinG is incompatible with the #9GXE "TurboCopy" mode. Use the #9
     control panel to disable TurboCopy (it is off by default)
   * The Orchid mmtllo.drv driver for the Prodesigner IIs has duplicate
     system colors which prevents applications from getting an identity
     palette and greatly reduces the WinG blit speed. As a workaround you
     can try using standard the Tseng ET4000 drivers instead of the mmtllo
     drivers

                         Aborts and Error Messages

Lock-up in first couple of moves

   * Disable either General MIDI music or Movies

Not enough memory to run game.

   * Ensure no other Windows programs are running
   * Disable any screen savers, virus scanners, mail-notification
     utilities, etc.
   * Use Program Manager instead of third party desktops (i.e. Norton
     Desktop, etc.). This can be done by typing "WIN PROGMAN" at the DOS
     prompt
   * Disable any audio-related Windows programs prior to starting the game
   * Turn off your Wallpaper in Control Panel in Desktop
   * Disable the RAMDRIVE.SYS command in CONFIG.SYS file

Not enough memory under Windows For Workgroups.

   * If you do not intend to play a multi-player game, you can start
     Windows by typing "WIN /N". This will not load the network portion of
     Windows For Workgroups and will free up some memory for the game. Also
     see "Not enough memory to run game" under the Error Message section

"General Protection Fault" error messages

   * This error is usually caused by a memory conflict. Make sure there are
     no other Windows programs running simultaneously. Bypass alternate
     Windows desktop packages, such as PC Tools, Dashboard, Packard Bell
     Navigator, Norton Desktop etc., as these use precious memory. Use
     Program Manager instead by typing "WIN PROGMAN" at the DOS command
     line. This will start Windows using the regular Program Manager rather
     than the alternate desktop shell

Fatal Errors

   * Make sure there are no other Windows programs running simultaneously

Duplicate DVA.386 file in SYSTEM.INI file

   * Some older application didn't install the dva.386 file in a standard
     way. Edit the system.ini file and remove the duplicate entry. The line
     that the MONOPOLY inserts is device=c:\windows\system\dva.386. Any
     other lines in your file that reference dva.386 either need to be
     removed, or commented out. You can comment out the old line by putting
     a semi-colon (;) in front of the line. For example: ;device=dva.386

Getting "System Error: Cannot read from drive ...:"

   * Make sure the MONOPOLY CD-ROM Game CD is in the drive before you start
     the game.
   * If you are using a multi-CD drive, make sure game is in first drive

Win32s error messages

   * If you have video difficulties, determine if your video card uses the
     S3 chipset. Certain S3 drivers do not work with Win32s. Either use the
     generic drivers shipped with Windows, or contact the video card
     manufacturer for an updated driver
   * If you have a printer driver by LaserMaster, you must comment it out
     in your SYSTEM.INI (or WIN.INI) file before installing Win32s. Reboot,
     install Win32s, remove the comment character, and reboot again. To
     comment out a line, put a semi-colon (;) in front of the line
   * Make sure that the device=*vmcpd line is in your SYSTEM.INI file.
   * Make sure that paging is enabled. From the Control Panel, select the
     386 Enhanced icon, choose Virtual Memory, and choose Change. Verify
     that the drive type is not set to none. The type can be set to either
     temporary or permanent. (Windows 3.x)
   * If you are using SHARE instead of VSHARE.386, make sure that SHARE is
     enabled in the AUTOEXEC.BAT. (i.e. C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE.)
   * Do not try and run more than one instance of the game at a time
   * Make sure there are no other Windows programs running simultaneously

"Cannot run multiple instances of DLL under WIN32"

   * Restart Windows, and re-run Monopoly

                                   AUDIO

No sound or music

   * This indicates that you sound card is not setup to play Windows sound
     files. Verify that your sound card is working properly by running
     another application that produces digital sound (Note: CD AUDIO disks
     do NOT count). Of course, you will need to verify that your volume
     levels (both on you speakers and in your mixer in Windows) are at a
     sufficient level

Music and sound garbled

   * Update sound card drivers. If that doesn't help turn off either sounds
     or music, the other will play just fine

                                   VIDEO

Why doesn't MONOPOLY play at full screen?

   * The game has been designed to play at full screen with a 640X480 256
     color Windows video driver. At a higher resolution than this (e.g.
     800X600 256 color or 1024X768 256 color), the game will run in a
     smaller window

Game colors look odd

   * Make sure Windows is running in 256 color mode

Video problems

   * See Win32s error messages

                                  INTERNET

Requirements for Internet Play

   * A connection that allows the use of a WINSOCK 1.1 transport is
     required
   * A SLIP/PPP connection is also required

How to find players.

   * You can find out how at the Westwood Studios World Wide Web Site.
     Using your web browser, go to http://www.westwood.com. From the Home
     Page, click on Index and select MONOPOLY CD-ROM game Frequently Asked
     Questions (FAQ). Look for information about the Westwood Studios

> What is WinSock?

How to get WinSock on computer

   * If you are going to play the game across the Internet, your Internet
     Services Provider will usually be able to provide a Shareware or
     Commercial copy of WINSOCK

What to look for in a provider?

   * You will need a service provider that offers a connection that
     supports WINSOCK. They must also provide a SLIP/PPP connection

Which connectivity package should I use?
The game was successfully tested with the following programs:

   * TRUMPET V2.0, revision B
   * INTERNET CHAMELEON
   * CHAMELEON NFS
   * SPRY AIR SERIES
   * INTERNET IN A BOX
   * MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 BUILT IN PPP
   * MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 TCP/IP for LAN
   * MICROSOFT WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS 3.11 TCP/IP for LAN

Which Internet package with Win95?

   * Windows '95 comes with Internet access software. Please consult your
     Windows '95 documentation for an explanation on how to set it up.
     Additionally, most commercial Internet access vendors have released,
     or will release a Windows '95 compatible version

Long pauses between turns on Internet?

   * As more people continue to access the Internet, it will inevitably
     feel the impact of that load. But there is one thing you can try. Some
     internet connectivity software (dialers) allow you to change a setting
     known as the "MRU" or "MTU" or "MTU size". The MONOPOLY CD-ROM Game
     and Westwood Chat (Wchat) run best when set to 512. Please refer to
     your dialer documentation for instructions on modifying this setting.
     You may wish to experiment with the setting of this number to
     determine optimum performance under your system

Compuserve, AOL, or Prodigy?

   * Windows or Windows for Workgroups versions 3.1 or 3.11
   * The WINSOCK.DLL provided by Compuserve and AOL let you play the over
     the Internet. At the time of the release Prodigy did not provide a
     WINSOCK.DLL

Internet and Windows '95

   * You must either upgrade your Internet connectivity software to the
     Windows '95 compatible version, or use the Microsoft Internet access
     software that comes with Windows '95
   * If you need additional assistance, please contact your on-line service
     provider for more information on accessing the Internet. Please note
     that these on-line service providers usually charge for all of your
     connect time

How can I determine my IP address?

   * Use a web browser to go to the following Web page:
     "http://www.monopoly.com/myip.html"
   * Use the Wchat program that was installed as part of the game. By
     clicking on the "Host a Game" button, Wchat has the ability to
     auto-detect your IP address
   * Try watching the login sequence when connecting to the Internet

How to communicate IP to a friend.

   * The best way to do this is to use Wchat. Wchat's on-line help can tell
     you how to communicate your IP address to other MONOPOLY CD-ROM Game
     players

IP address doesn't respond

   * You may be using the wrong IP address. To test the IP address, you can
     use a program called PING. PING will tell you if the IP address you
     are trying is still alive. To find out if you have access to a copy of
     PING, contact your Internet Services Provider

What is Wchat?

   * The Westwood Chat program allows you to talk to other MONOPOLY game
     players on the Internet. Once you have established your Internet
     connection, double click on Wchat to run the program. You may then
     talk to other players about starting up an Internet game. To find out
     more about using Wchat and how to connect to the Westwood chat area,
     refer to the Wchat program's on-line help

Best way to organize an Internet game?

   * Use the Wchat program to visit the Westwood studios game Waiting Room.
     Join the MONOPOLY CD-ROM game channel to talk with other players and
     to challenge them to a game. To find out more about using Wchat and
     how to connect to the Westwood chat area, refer to the Wchat program's
     on-line help

No Internet with Win95

   * Make sure TCP/IP communications is using 32-bit software. The
     Microsoft WinSock that ships with Windows '95 is 32-bit, and several
     other vendors will be shipping 32-bit WinSock versions soon. Please
     contact your WinSock vendor for more information

Why is connecting with Wchat so slow?

   * Wchat needs your MTU size to be 512 or greater
   * See "Long pauses between turns on Internet"

Wchat won't connect.

   * Some access providers don't allow IRC clients to run over their
     networks. Wchat is a tiny IRC client, and so will not work over those
     providers that don't allow IRC. This includes America Online

Limited to X players (below 6)

   * Some Internet access programs (dialers) have limitations on the number
     of "sockets" that can be open at one time. This would cause a problem
     with your Internet access program. Contact your Internet access
     software maker or your internet access provider for a fix

                                Network Play

How to play over LAN network

   * Each computer must be connected to the network, and have a network
     adapter (card) running a TCP/IP protocol, and have WinSock 1.1 for
     that network adapter. If you are going to play MONOPOLY CD-ROM on a
     physical network, request a copy of WINSOCK from your network
     administrator

                                  Gameplay

Game runs slowly

   * If computer has more than 8MB of RAM enable SMARTDRIVE. Also, for
     better game performance switch to 256 color mode

During Internet play, limited to x players (below 6)

   * Some Internet access programs (dialers) have limitations on the number
     of "sockets" that can be open at one time. Contact your Internet
     access software maker or your Internet access provider for a fix

Will the game work with Multi-CD changer?

   * The game will INSTALL from any drive letter in a changer system,
     however it will only run from the first drive letter

Human Player lost to Computer Player, and cannot end game

   * Click on the computer player(S) status bar to bring up that player's
     options. Turn "Computer rolls for itself" off. You can now access FILE
     menu, and exit normally.

                                Windows '95

How to make movies play faster

   * You can improve movie playback performance by going into the Settings
     option on the Win95 START menu, selecting CONTROL PANEL, then SYSTEM,
     PERFORMANCE, FILE SYSTEM and then CD-ROM. There is a menu here which
     allows you to enable read-ahead buffering of the CD (this seems to be
     disabled by default). Select the setting that matches your CD-ROM
     drive (2X, 4X etc.). You can also change the size of the buffer,
     although this does take away memory from the rest of the system

Color changes in Windows 95

   * To avoid this, maximize the MONOPOLY CD-ROM window and try not to
     switch to other applications while running the game. If the problem
     persists, switch to another application, wait a moment, and then
     switch back to the MONOPOLY CD-ROM game window
