WINDOWS 95 CONNECTION TO CHANNEL 1

Microsoft Windows 95 gives us a very easy way to set up Dial-up
Internet Connections. In addition, it tends to work better and faster
than Windows 3.1 due to its 32-bit engine and better integration.

If you have a PPP account with Channel 1, connecting is about as
simple as it can be. Follow the instructions in your Windows manual to
set up Dial-Up networking and you will be connected in no time.
However, setting up our unlimited access TIA account will take a
little more work, due to how Microsoft has handled SLIP access in Win
   95.

You will need your Win95 CDROM handy (not diskettes; unfortunately the
SLIP drivers that you'll need for TIA access to Channel 1 are only on
the CDROM. Either try to borrow a copy of the drivers from a friend or
sign up for a PPP account, which does not require these drivers. You
may also download the SLIP drivers from ftp.microsoft.com).

Here is what you need to do:

    1. If you already have Trumpet Winsock installed (upgrading from Win
3.1 with Channel 1 access), you need to remove it since Win95
provides its own improved Winsock. Click the right mouse button on
the Start button in the lower-left corner of your screen. Select
Explore, and select the Startup group in the Explorer window that
appears. Double-click on Startup. You should see a Trumpet Winsock
icon. Click the right mouse button on the icon and select Delete.
If you don't see the Trumpet Winsock icon, that's fine.
    2. You need to install Win95 support for SLIP. Unfortunately this
isn't installed by default. Run the Control Panel by clicking on
the Start Button, selecting Settings, and clicking Control Panel.
Doubleclick on Add/Remove Programs. Click on Windows setup (the
bar along the top of the dialog box) and click on Have Disk. Your
Win95 CDROM should be in the drive, so type
X:\ADMIN\APPTOOLS\DSCRIPT where X is the letter of your CDROM
drive. Click OK. Click on the SLIP support checkbox that appears
and click OK. Windows will begin copying files to your hard disk.
If a box appears that asks if you want to replace a newer file
with an older one, follow Window's recommendation to keep the
       newer file.
    3. You also need TCP/IP installed. This could have been done by
Windows during the install. But to doublecheck, run the Control
Panel (click on Start, click on Settings, click on Control Panel)
and doubleclick on the Network icon. Make sure TCP/IP appears in
the list. If it doesn't, click on Add, doubleclick on Protocols,
click on Microsoft, and click on TCP/IP. Click OK to install the
       software.
    4. You need to configure the TCP/IP settings also. You're still in
the Network section, so click on TCP/IP to select it and click
Properties. You need to enter the following settings:
         1. Specify my own IP address. Type in 192.0.2.1 for the IP
address and 255.255.255.0 for the net mask.
         2. Add a gateway. Type in 199.1.13.9 and click Add.
         3. Enable DNS. Type in "slip" for the node name and channel1.com
for the domain. Type in 199.1.13.9 in the Name Server box and
click Add. Type in channel1.com for the domain suffix name
            and click Add.

These settings can be found under various tabs in the dialog.
Don't change any other settings. When you're done, click OK
until you get out of the network dialog box. You can also
            close the control panel.

    5. You can now create a new connection to Channel 1 by opening the
Dial-Up Networking folder (double click on My Computer to find it)
and doubleclicking on Make New Connection.
    6. Type a name for your connection (such as Channel 1 Internet) and
select your modem from the list (it will probably already be
       shown).
    7. Click NEXT and type in the phone number of Channel 1's UNIX/SLIP
       line (349-1201). Click FINISH.
    8. A new icon will appear in the Dial-Up networking folder. Now we
have to tell Windows that we want to use SLIP rather than PPP.
    9. Click the right mouse button on the Channel 1 icon and select
Properties. Click on Server Type and select SLIP in the drop-down
box near the top of the dialog box. Deselect the box that says Log
into network. Make sure TCP/IP is selected.
   10. Click the TCP/IP Settings button and change the IP address to
192.0.2.1, the Primary DNS server to 199.1.13.9, and the secondary
       DNS server to 199.1.13.13.
   11. Click OK a few times until you've gone back to the main connection
dialog box and click Configure to configure the modem settings.
   12. Go to the Options section (look on the tabs along the top of the
dialog box) and check the "Bring up terminal window after dialing"
box so you can log into your account and start TIA.
   13. Click OK until you get back to the Dial-up Networking folder. This
part of the configuration is complete.
   14. To connect to Channel 1, all you have to do is double-click on the
Channel 1 icon. After it connects, you can log in as usual. Hit
ENTER when it asks you for your terminal type (it will default to
dumb), type TIA and and hit ENTER. This puts you in SLIP mode. You
then click CONTINUE. A black window will appear. Click CONTINUE
again. Now you can run Netscape or any other Winsock program.
