                                 Introduction

Thank you for taking the time to examine WordWise -- the most flexible and ex-
pandable Daily Scripture program available. With nearly 30 Bible versions to
choose from, support for most major operating systems, and a registration price
of just $20, we believe that WordWise is an outstanding program.

A lot of work and thoughtful design has gone into making it an entertaining,
flexible, and valuable part of your software collection. Once installed on your
computer, it remains like a faithful friend, bringing you a message from God's
Word as each day begins. WordWise is a perpetual daily calendar, and contains
enough Scriptures to display a new one each day for an entire year without re-
peating. Though the Scriptures will begin to repeat after one year, each verse
will be displayed only once per year, and the calendar date will always be cor-
rect. In addition to giving you daily Scriptures, WordWise can remind you of
your daily Bible readings as you read through on a one-year plan.

As a further benefit, WordWise was designed with expandability in mind. Addi-
tional topics may be purchased and added at any time. Interested in increasing
your Bible knowledge? Simply add the Bible Facts package and you'll have 366
questions to answer covering Bible personalities and events. How's your vocab-
ulary? The WordWise vocabulary package will arm you with 366 outstanding words
to "aggrandize your articulation". From quotable quotes, to foreign languages,
to historical events, the WordWise library offers you many current and upcoming
additions from which to choose.

Following are some of the features of the registered version of WordWise. They
are common to all platforms:

  * Bible verses displayed automatically each time you start your computer. One
for every day of the year.
  * Includes over twenty Bible versions from which to choose. Any or all may be
viewed at the same time, and all are included in the basic package.
  * Monthly perpetual calendar which can be advanced or regressed indefinitely.
  * Pop-up references designed to aid in your Bible study.
  * Daily reminders of Through-the-Bible readings.
  * Automatic saving of daily Scripture to a file for use with word or speech
    processors.
  * Three modes of operation from which to choose.
  * Future expandability through the addition of extra modules.
  * Printed user's manual.
  * Access to additional Bible versions as they are released. New Bible trans-
lations are distributed through CompuServe, the Internet & BBSs and are
free to registered users. An up-to-date collection of all additional
translations is also available from Creative Systems for a nominal charge.

Additional Windows features:

To receive your registered copy, please send $20 (plus $1 s&h) by check or
money order to:

                              Creative Systems
                               P.O. Box 241111
                          Anchorage, AK 99524-1111

The most convenient way of ordering is to print out the file REGISTER.TXT, fill
it out, and mail it to us with your payment. This insures that we will be pro-
vided with all the information necessary to get the appropriate version of the
program to you as quickly as possible. If, for some reason, you do not wish to
use the printed form, don't forget to specify your preference of Windows, DOS,
Mac, or OS/2, and the disk size you need.)

For other inquiries, you may write or give us a call. Phone/FAX (907) 344-3480.
The best method, however, is to send mail to CompuServe ID 74127,2657.

                                Installation

If you've managed to get this far by uncompressing the distribution file, then
you'll have no problem installing the program. Just extract all of the files in
this archive into a directory on your hard drive, and call it "WORDWISE". Next,
make a shadow of the WordWise program and place it into your Startup folder. To
do this, open the WORDWISE folder and look for the WORDWISE.EXE icon. Hold down
the <Control> and <Shift> keys and drag the icon over to the Startup folder
which is located in the System folder. This will cause WordWise to start auto-
matically each time your system is started.

                        Running WordWise the First Time

After WordWise is installed, it's a good idea to shutdown OS/2 and restart.
That way you can verify that installation was successful and that WordWise will
run automatically. The next step is to customize it.

The first time it is run, WordWise will appear on the desktop in the default
location, but you may then resize it and locate it anywhere on the desktop you
desire. Each time the WordWise window is closed, its size and position are
saved so that it will always appear the next time exactly where you left it.
The size and location are up to you, but will depend upon the number of pack-
ages you want to view each day and the font size you assign to each. (Refer to
the "Changing Package Settings" section for information on enabling/disabling
packages and assigning fonts.) Just remember to make your window a little
taller than necessary because the length of each Scripture will vary from day
to day.

At this point, you should take the time to find your way around and become fam-
iliar with the program. Enable all the packages you want to see, but just re-
member: there's a limited amount of room on the screen. There is no limit, how-
ever, to the number of packages it is possible to display, so if you want to
see them all, simply adjust the font size accordingly. The remainder of this
file contains more detailed information to which you may wish to refer during
your evaluation.

                           Changing Program Settings

To bring up the Program Settings window, [V] Program Settings ͻ
choose the Program option from the Settings
menu (Alt-S, G) or hit the F8 key. You will Quote Method

left-hand side (discussed below) and four () Date OK
buttons on the right-hand side. After making ( ) Incremental
the desired changes, you may choose one of ( ) Random Ŀ
the following buttons: Cancel
                                               Options
[OK] will close the window and put the Ŀ Ŀ
changes you have made into effect im- [ ] Save to File Save
mediately. However, the changes will [] Justify Text

program, and the next time you start it [ ] Blank Lines Help
they will not be implemented. This is a
good way to experiment without making
     the changes permanent. ͼ

[Cancel] closes the window and disregards
any changes you have made so far. The program will return to the state it
was in when you opened the Program Settings window.

[Save] will close the window and write the changes you wanted to disk so Word-
Wise will always start up with the same settings. These changes will re-
main intact until the next time you save new settings. After choosing
Save, a small message box will appear to confirm that the settings were
     written to disk.

[Help] may be selected at any time for a quick reminder of how to change set-
tings. A small help window will appear and, once closed, the Program Set-
tings window will remain open until you choose OK, Cancel, or Save.

Quote Method:

WordWise can select the day's Scripture by one of three different methods,
and gives you the ability to choose the one which best suits your needs.

  * Date: In this mode, WordWise checks your computer's clock for the date and
displays the correct verse for the day. Unless your computer does not have
a clock (which is unlikely) this is probably the best choice for you.

  * Incremental: By selecting Incremental Mode, a new verse will be displayed
each time the program is run. Unlike Date Mode, Incremental Mode will give
you a different verse each time WordWise is run throughout the day. The ad-
vantage is that you can see more verses in a day's time; the disadvantage
is that you will more quickly run through the 366 selections and begin see-
ing repeats before the year is up. This should be the mode of choice,
though, if you are unable to use Date Mode.

  * Random: This mode simply chooses one of the 366 possible verses at random
each time the program is run. Since no record is kept of which have been
displayed, repeats will be more frequent. Thus, it is the least desirable
mode, but is available should you decide to use it.

+ Note: The first time it is run, WordWise checks for the presence of a
system clock. If it finds one, then Date Mode is used, otherwise Incre-
    mental Mode is used.)

Options:

  * Save to File: By checking this option, the current day's Scripture is saved
to a text file as the program begins. The file may then be used with a word
processor or speech processor. If your system has the necessary software
and hardware to read a text file aloud (SoundBlaster card, Pro Audio Spec-
trum, Covox, etc.) then you may direct it to read WORDWISE.TXT. Please re-
fer to your audio card's manual for instructions on how to do this.

  * Justify Text: This option displays verses fully justified, with smooth left
and right edges. Full justification can be more pleasing to the eye, but
may leave large gaps between the words when your window is very narrow.
Experiment with this option to decide which way you prefer.

  * Update Daily: Many people leave their computers on all the time and leave
WordWise up in the corner of the screen. With the Update Daily option
checked, WordWise will advance to the next day's verse at midnight each
    night.

  * Blank Lines: This option may aid in readability by adding a half-height
blank line between each Bible verse. It also consumes a little more desktop
space, so you may wish to disable it if your WordWise window takes up more
    room than you would like.

                                The Main Menu

File:

  * New: brings up a new day's verse, but only when running in Incremental or
Random Mode. In Date Mode, the same verse will always be displayed for any
given day of the year. (See the section titled "Changing Program Settings"
for details about the three operation modes.) If you have the Save to File
option enabled, then the new verse will be written to disk.

  * Exit: ends WordWise and closes the window. Its current position is saved to
disk and will be restored the next time it is run.

Settings:

able packages, and assign different fonts to those which are enabled. See
the section entitled "Changing Package Settings" for details.

program operation. See the section entitled "Changing Program Settings" for
    more details.

  * Start Date... aligns the Through the Bible package with the date you begin
    reading.

  * Day Forward: moves ahead to see the next day's verse. +

  * Day Backward: moves back to see the previous day's verse. +

  * Day Reset: returns to the original verse for the day. +
(+ Note: Moving forward and backward is only possible in Date and In-
        cremental modes.)

Options:

  * References... will bring up a window which allows you to view reference in-
formation which comes with some packages. (A few Bible references are in-
cluded with your purchase.) Once the Reference window appears, just select
the desired reference from the list box and click the [View] button. If
there are currently no reference files in the WordWise directory, the Ref-
erences option will not be available.

  * Show Answers: reveals the answers to packages which contain questions. A
good example would be trivia packages such as "Bible Quiz". Each time
Show Answers is selected, it will toggle the answers between being shown
and being hidden; other packages will be unaffected. Choosing Day Forward
or Day Backward will cause the answers to again be hidden. This option will
not be available if there are no question/answer packages enabled.

Instead of deleting the other
files, WordWise simply renames them with an .off extension and then ignores
them. This way, they are still available for future use, if you choose to re-
enable them.

The first and second list boxes show the enabled and disabled packages, re-
spectively. To enable or disable a package, simply highlight it and click the
[On/Off] button, or you may double-click the package name. This change will
take effect once the Package Settings window is closed, and will remain in
effect until the action is reversed. If you highlight an enabled package, the
list boxes at the bottom of the window will display the font and size which
will be used to display it.

Packages are initially set to the System Proportional font size 10, since this
is always available in any OS/2 setup. (The only exception is the Greek
package which requires the Symbol Set font.) Since the default font is not very
attractive, you will probably want to assign other fonts to your pack-
ages. If you have purchased a collection of additional fonts and added them to
your system, then you will be able to select these fonts in addition to the
ones that come with OS/2. To emphasize the character of each Bible transla-
tion, you may consider assigning an appropriate font to each. For instance, you
may decide to assign a gothic font to the King James, a script font to the New
American Standard, or a modern font to The Living Bible. After choosing the
style that looks good to you, click the [Assign Font] button to assign the new
font and size to the package. If that package is ever disabled and later re-
enabled, the font and size will be reassigned automatically.

Following is a brief description of the purpose of the four buttons on the
right-hand side of the window:

[OK] will close the window and return you to the main window. If you have en-
abled or disabled packages, or have assigned new fonts and sizes to en-
abled packages, then the main WordWise window will be updated.

[On/Off] will change the state of the currently selected package. If no pack-
age is highlighted, then you will be reminded to choose one first. This
action may also be accomplished by double-clicking the filename.

[Assign Font] assigns the currently highlighted font and size to the high-
lighted package. An enabled package, a font, and a size must have all
been selected, or you will be given a message reminding you to highlight
all three first. The font and size will be remembered even during per-
iods when the package is disabled.

[Help] may be selected at any time for a quick reminder of how to change
package settings. A small help window will appear and, once closed, the
Package Settings window will remain open until you choose OK.

                                  A Final Note

While you are able to experiment freely with this program, please do not forget
its purpose: giving you the opportunity to thoroughly test a commercial program
before purchase. It is not "freeware", and may not be used past a reasonable
amount of time in which you make a purchase decision. Please register WordWise
so that we may continue producing high-quality, low-priced Christian software.
And PLEASE help us by passing it on to others! God bless.
