(1) WELCOME

Welcome to World Message Exchange (WME). We're glad you downloaded our
information packet.

WME is a very friendly Net. We don't have an overabundance of
rules. We're a net that encourages freedom of expression and good
fellowship without holding a big hammer over everyone's heads. Like
many networks, WME is hierarchical. The heart and soul of WME is its one
main HUB. The main hub is run on a computer that's dedicated strictly
to WME mail traffic. All of the hub equipment has been donated by
members of the network. WME does not charge a membership fee, does not
collect dues, it's entirely free. All costs are on the individual
sysop.

WME is a small-to-medium sized net consisting of approximately 325
member boards. Its main HUB is located in New Hampshire. The Hub sysop
is Doug Munson.

The success of WME is its users.....it's a friendly and very
helpful net.

(2) HOW WME IS STRUCTURED

The Main HUB is the center of all message traffic. Any HUB that
pulls of the Main HUB is known as a Level One Hub. Any Hub that
pulls off a Level one Hub is known as a Level Two Hub. Any Hub that
pulls off a Level Two Hub is known as a Level Three Hub. We
recommend no deeper than a Level Three Hub with the exception of our
Nodes overseas.

    | | |
   Lv2 Lv2 Lv2

   Lv3 Lv3 Lv3

As you can see, mail traffic flows down to the lowest level and of
course back up. Obviously, the lower the level the longer it takes for
the mail to get to/from there from other nodes in the net.

To apply for WME, ask you HUB of choice if he/she will accept you and if
yes fill out the WME application and give to your Hub Sysop. In return
he/she will forward it to Doug Munson in the Net Admin Conference.

*Dupes can be a major headache in a QWK Network like WME. When you first
get your conferences set up, suggest you do several test runs with your
HUB to make sure everything is working correctly.

*Several programs do exist to help prevent dupes, like Mailrun Script.

(3) HISTORY OF WME

The net was started in April '92 by Randy Hunt (Founder & first Net
Coordinator). It was originally called 'The TriBBS Network', or TTN, and
was only for other TriBBS boards. It's main purpose was to provide a
simple way of netting the TriBBS support conference. A few months after
that, Randy had some major system problems that caused him to step down
and Mark Goodwin (author of TriBBS) took over the role as NC. During the
next 6 months the net started to grow in size at an astounding speed.

By this time many non-TriBBS systems wanted to join the net and a
number of policy issues started to arise. During the spring of '93
there was a major reorganization of the net. It was opened it to all
BBS types, policy discussions & implementations, etc. At this point,
Mark stepped down as NC (due to time constraints & the desire to keep
any conflict of interest out of the net). Joe Klemmer then took over as
NC. He created the concept of the Coordination Team, a five member group
where each member helped facilitate an aspect of the net. The members of
the initial Coordination Team were: Joe Klemmer, Steve Sears, Sean
McClanahan, Joe Johnson & Doug Munson. A network name change occurred
with the new policy on membership. A vote was conducted to come up with
a suitable name. The winner was 'World Message Exchange', or WME,
because by this time the net was not only in the US and Canada, but also
in Germany, France & South Africa.

The time from March '93 to late Summer was one of great upheaval
and expansion. Many problems arose and were dealt with; the Great
Dupe Flood of 93, the Crashing of the NetHost board, the near
fracturing of the net that this causes, and more. By the summer of
'93 things had finally settled into a stable, working environment.
It was then that Joe stepped down from NC. Steve Sears was elected to
the NC position and Keith Kolbo was elected to the vacant position on
the Co-Team.

From the Summer of '93 to now, WME has grown to a size that was
undreamed of by it's originators. And with this growth has come a
number of 'growing pains' and other issues. Over time, Sean and Keith
have stepped down from the Co-Team due to personal reasons. Again,
since WME is a democratic net, replacements were voted in by the general
membership.

And that's the condensed version of the History of WME. While
we are only coming up on our 2nd anniversary (it only seems like
some of us have been here for decades), the net has grown to a size
and state that's much more than a lot of older nets. And with the
help of all the users of WME, it will continue to get better and
better every year.

(4) MEET THE CO-TEAM

The Co-team is a 5 member group that administers WME They do not own
WME, and they do not implement their own policies. WME policy is
determined by the general membership via periodic network Votes. The
CoTeam just administer the everyday duties of WME per the guidelines.
The users and especially the sysops who carry WME is the NET and make it
what is today.

GLENDA KENNEDY: The newest member of the Coteam and Chief Moderator.
Head Moderator. Settles disputes between moderators and users.
Offers guidance to moderators.

LARRY KILGORE: Conference Coordinator... He is the person who
maintains the conference list and coordinates the voting for new or
deleted conferences. You have a suggestion? He is the guy you speak
to.

DOUG MUNSON: Spokesperson. The old timer of WME....The last original
member of the Co-Team. The sysop of the Net Hub. Keeper of the
nodelist.

JOHN BODEN: One of the oldest members of WME. One of the original
boards to pull WME.

RICHARD CYCHOLL: No title, just helps were and when needed. Sysop of a
small board called Chapter 11 BBS in Manassas Park, VA. He's been
with WME since its TTN days back in October 1992. Like many other
sysops of WME, WME was the first Net that he carried.

(5) TIPS ON SPEEDING UP THE MAIL

There are some ways to speed up the mail if hubs will work together.
The secret is to make 2 mailruns per day. Level One hubs that want to
speed the mail flow should do one regular mailrun during the night and
one after the Main Hub's posted mailrun hours. Also Level One hubs
should schedule the hubs under them to do their mailruns right after the
Level One mailrun to the Main Hub. This method will keep the delay to
the minimum.

Automating your mailruns may be difficult unless you have some type of
automation software. WME supports most methods of transferring mail,
i.e., Fido-style mailers, .QWK, and PostLink. If you intend on
participating as a .QWK node, then you'll need a script to handle your
mailruns. There are some already available if you aren't sure of how to
write your own. These include:

Mailrun A {COMMO} Script that works will do mailruns with TriBBS
hubs. The author will create a script to handle
mailruns with other BBSware hubs for a small fee.

RoboMail Will work automatically with PCBoard automatically with
with most of PCBoard compatible mail doors and will do
a self-learn script for other BBS Software.

Cam-Mail Its a mail reader with built in capability to call
PCBoard, TriBBS and other BBS Software for automated
                 mail runs.

I am sure there are more and if you know of one please notify Richard
Cycholl to advise of such.

 * Being a moderator can be interesting and rewarding, if you are
willing to put time in your conference and learn to interact with the
 conference users.

*Learn not to be too heavy handed, but at the same time have a set of
conference rules and post them at least once a month so new users are
aware of what the rules are.

*When speaking as a user and regular participant, try not to use your
moderator title. Only use your title on warning or other official
actions.

*Sometimes its just best to give informal warnings vice formal ones on a
light first offense. Most users are more receptive to that approach.

*On any formal warning suggest the moderator forward a copy to the Chief
Moderator for their records.

*As a thread wears on, their are times when the thread sways from the
original subject to another that has nothing to do with your conference.
Do not be afraid to kindly sway the users to another conference or get
the subject back on topic.

*Have a copy of the guidelines to help you understand what the rules of
WME is.

(11) USE OF ALIAS

Alias are only allowed in 3 Conferences. Costume Party, Dealing with
   with Death and Recovery Conference.

 * WME does not tolerate alias except the 3 mentioned above. It is the
sysop's responsibility to make sure that if they have a board that
allows alias, that WME message conferences does not allow alias.
Also once the user is informed of the rule, he/she must reframe.

*************************************************************

(12) GENERAL TIPS

Alot of sysops get nets just for their users. If this is the case
thats okay, but a good suggestion is to read WME Sysops and Net Admin.
Any current changes or announcement will be made in those conferences.
  It may affect your board.

There are times that you will have a strong disagreement or
intenionally or unintentionally flame someone or yourself. Remember
answering in kind is not the correct approach. If you feel that you
have been wronged, notify the moderator of the conference in WME
Grievance or Glenda Kennedy of the Co-Team. Remember a simple rule
of thumb. Don't be annoying and don't be easily annoyed.

In debate conference or other conference as far as that goes, if there
is a disagreement remember this.... Attack ideas and not people.

*************************************************************

(13) NOTE

This format is not permanent. As tips and tricks grows, the
moderators lists and conference list will be separate. If any user or
sysop has an article, an editorial and tips and tricks that will help
other users or sysops please submit them to Richard Cycholl in Net
Adman or Internet Address rcycholl@mnsinc.com. That also goes for
constructive criticism also. One last note. This is not my net, or the
Co-teams, but everyone's net. Lets keep it friendly by helping
  others.
