6.0 MORE ON USAGE

6.1 More command details

6.1.1 Main screen -

ADD Click this or type A to Add a new record.
Records are added empty, and must then be
                  Modded.

DEL Deletes current record. Needs confirmation.
Doesn't physically remove it from database,
just flags it. "Deleted" records are re-used
by subsequent Adds, which take the first free
slot. (To remove these slots, run BBTrim.)

MOD Modify (edit) contents of the current record.
(Covered, along with the editor itself, in the
                  previous section, Section 5.9)

LIST Switches from the Main screen to the List
display (assuming there is a List to display).
(Esc from the Main screen does the same thing)

GET Retrieval. (Covered in Section 5.5)

SEARCH Retrieval. (Covered in Section 5.5)

<< These buttons (or the left/right arrow keys)
       >> step sequentially through the current List of
records, back or forward. They wrap, first
item to last and vice versa respectively.

JOIN Links one record logically to another,
and vice versa. (Covered in Section 5.6)

BREAK Breaks a Join. (Covered in Section 5.6)

PASTE If you've Copied up an item on the List screen
(to the Paste Buffer), then you can Paste.
Paste replaces the CURRENT RECORD's contents
(either entirely, or just those fields you have
turned on by checking them in the Paste Buffer)
Accessed via 'Buffer' on the List screen.

                  -----------------------------------------------
                  'Copy up'/'Paste' is a great labour-saver.
If you have lots of similar records to enter,
set up a template of the unchanging part,
Copy it, activate those Buffer fields you want
pasted (all, by default), then cycle through
                  Add, Paste, Mod, until done.
                  -----------------------------------------------

EXEC Runs a program directly from the record.
                  (Covered in Section 7.1)

       FILE Multi-purpose. Allows you to:

                  - switch to a new database
                  - make a backup copy of the current one
                    (zip-compressed if you have PKZip/PKUnZip)
                  - create Full or Item (List) listings of
databases to a file or to printer
                  - erase the current database

(Covered in Sections 7.3 thru 7.6)

       EXIT Quit BlueBook.

6.1.2 List screen -

SORT Sorts Lists temporarily, and physical database
files permanently. (Covered in Section 8.1)

SELECT Allows you to select and operate on GROUPS of
records from the current List. Possible
                  operations are: Include, eXclude, Redate,
                  Delete, Export, Trans[fer records], and
[bulk] Paste. (Covered in Section 8.2)

INCLUDE Drops all records from the List that are NOT
currently selected. (Covered in Section 8.2)

EXCLUDE Drops all currently selected records from the
                  List. (Covered in Section 8.2)

REDATE Changes the date of all selected records.
                                        (Covered in Section 8.2)

DELETE A bulk "Del", on all selected records.
Drops them from the DATABASE, not just the
                  List. (Covered in Section 8.2)

EXPORT Outputs data from seLected records in comma-
delimited format. (Covered in Section 8.3)

(8 commands in 1.) (Covered in Section 8.4)

PASTE A bulk "Paste", on all selected records
(not just the current record, as on the Main
                  screen). (Covered in Section 8.5)

BUFFER Accesses Paste Buffer (Covered in Section 8.5)

COPY UP Loads Paste Buffer (Covered in Section 8.5)

PICKLISTS Compile keyword lists (Covered in Section 8.6)

FIND RECS This gives access to the exact same Get and
Search commands as are available on the Main
screen. Also Replace: locates and/or replaces
any text string. (Covered in Section 5.5)

GO.. A navigation command. Click, or type G, and
enter an item number on/from the List (NOT an
absolute record number). You will be taken to
the appropriate page, position and entry.

MAIN Switch to the Main screen (Esc does the same).

PgUp/PgDn These are the buttons to the left of GO & MAIN.
buttons Use them or the corresponding keys to turn
                  "pages" in the List.

Slider The vertical bar to the right of the actual
Listed items. Represents the entire List
graphically; used for moving quickly to an
approximate position in the List, which can
then be fine-tuned using the PgUp/PgDn buttons,
                  or Go..

Just click where you want the slider knob to
be. The knob, and the List position (shown
at top centre screen), will adjust accordingly.

To move to the start of a List, click ABOVE the
slider and close to it (same as Home key).

To move to the end of a List, click BELOW the
slider and close to it (same as End key).

Useful for large databases and Lists. Not so
                  important for small ones.
