              (C) Copyright 1995 Computerized Horizons

QUICK DESCRIPTION
===== ===========

Ding! is a utility for Major BBS that alerts you when users
reach specific section of the BBS. You can have Ding! alert you
immediately, by beeping (hence, "Ding!"). Or, Ding! can simply
make a record in the audit trail. Ding! will work at any point
in the BBS where a text block is displayed.

COST
====

There is no cost to use Ding!. It's a freebie. Computerized
Horizons believes that TPD's should offer a few free programs to
Major BBS users.

Of course, the Ding! package is copyrighted. You may not make
any modifications to it. However, you may distribute it. You may
make copies available on a BBS. You can give it to someone on
disk. You must distribute the whole program, you can not leave out
any files or modify it in any way. You may not charge money for
Ding!

HOW TO USE DING!
=== == === =====

Ding! is used a bit differently than most programs. How so?
you don't need to enter Ding! into your menu tree (in fact, it
won't let you even if you try). And, to use Ding!, you must know
(or learn) how to use text variables.

First, you must install Ding!. You can do this by typing the
familiar "A:INSTALL", or you can just copy the following files into
your MajorBBS directory: HORDING.DLL HORDING.MDF HORDING.MSG.

Ding! uses two different text variables. One is "DINGx", the
other is "AUDITx". You can use these in any text block you
like. "DINGx" will let cause a beep at the local console.
"AUDITx" will make an entry into the audit trail. "x" is replaced
by a number from 1 to 3, to let you use up to three DING's and
three AUDIT's. So, you have "DING1", "DING2", "DING3", "AUDIT1",
"AUDIT2", and "AUDIT3".

You need to choose where to place the text variables. You
can place them anywhere that MajorBBS/Worldgroup allows a text
variable (in text blocks, menus, etc.)

If you are running MajorBBS, you will use the BBSDRAW program
to add the text variable. If you are using Worldgroup, you will
use the WGSDRAW program. Both operate the same way. Just hit
ALT-V anywhere in the text block or menu, and you can add the text
variable. Since Ding! doesn't actually print anything, you do not
have to worry about the justification option.

BUGS?
=====

Just because it's free doesn't mean it's buggy. If you find
any bugs (or have any suggestions for improvements), please let us
know.

OTHER PROGRAMS BY COMPUTERIZED HORIZONS
===== ======== == ============ ========

Hacker Alarm
------ -----

Hacker Alarm is a program designed to give your SysOp accounts
the ultimate level of security. You no longer have to worry about
a user finding out your password.
We believe that the main security flaw with MajorBBS is that
the SysOp account is only protected by one password. Most BBS's
work the same way, but what happens when you have valuable data on
your system? The loss caused by a hacker gaining access to a
SysOp account can be devastating.
If you are truly paranoid, or need the best possible
protection for your system, you can totally disable all remote
SysOp access. This will ensure that nobody can log on to your
system if they have the "SYSOP" key or have the master key.
Many people do need or want the ability to call remotely.
You can still do this. Hacker Alarm has a way of determining that
you are an authorized user of the account. A hacker with the
password to a SysOp account will think that he logged on without
any problems, but will then be disconnected... and have no idea
what went wrong. If he tries calling back, he will NOT be able to
get on, no matter what.
Hacker Alarm is great for: -Installations requiring top
level security, -Company BBS's with confidential information
on-line, -Hobby BBS's and pay BBS's that are in areas with a
lot of hackers, or who have had problems in the past, -SysOps
that want to know that their system is as secure as possible.
Even if someone videotapes you logging on to your BBS at
the local console, they will not be able to log on to your
system.
Hacker Alarm costs just $65. For further details, you can
download the file "HORNOHAK.TXT" from the Galacticomm Demo System,
which describes the program in further detail (for security
reasons, there is no demo). Or, feel free to contact us for
further information.

"SSFE"
 ----

This program is not yet available, as of 3/16/95. It may be
ready by the time you are reading this, however.

"SSFE" replaces the usual console screens on MajorBBS or
Worldgroup (Account/Audit/Emulate/Stats...). Now, you have can
know *exactly* where the users on your system are and what they are
doing.

Each of the top 16 lines of the screen give detailed info
about what each user is doing. With a quick glance, you can see
which users are online (the UserID is listed, color coded for
male/female; blinking if the user has paged you), exactly where
they are (which module, like in a /# command; if in a menu page,
it specifies *which* menu page; if in teleconference, it shows
which channel; is in E-mail/forums, it tells you whether they are
reading/writing/etc.; if downloading, it shows what file and a
progress report complete with CPS rate!). You can see how long
the user has been in the module or menu page. There are also
"Receive" and "Transmit" lights for each user.
The bottom 8 lines of the screen can show any of a number
of different things:

-Account info. Complete with the users' keys, flags (suspended,
busy, 1-minute-warning, etc.), days left in class, number of
bytes input while typing; detail on channel hardware.

-Input screen. Shows User-ID; color-coded to show: male/female,
profanity, users with 'good' and 'bad' keys; can be set not to
show short input, such as when changing menus.

-Emulate. You can emulate with just the bottom 8 lines, so that
you can watch where other users are with the top 16 lines; You
can default to a "View Only" mode so that you can't accidentally
type on the users' screen. The best feature: When a user is
downloading a file, you don't see garbage, you see a COMPLETE
report: file name, protocol, bytes transferred, bytes left,
errors, time elapsed, time left, transfer bar, etc.

-SysOp Pages screen. With the standard MajorBBS/Worldgroup
screens, you can only see 3 lines of pages. With "SSFE", you can
view up to a full 24 lines of pages, complete with color-coding
(male/female, 'good'/'bad'). It also lists the time of the page.
It records when a user pages you *without* a message, as well.

-Audit Trail. You can get an 8-line or 24-line window of the
audit trail. It is 80 characters wide, so you can see almost all
the information in each audit entry.

-System Stats screen. This screen shows detailed information
about your system. It includes the number of system uploads/
downloads/forum messages/email, # of users, # of modules, # of
text variables, system loading, calls so far today, free RAM,
and more... all on 8-lines, so you can still see where everyone
is with the top 16 lines.

-Recent Callers. This screen shows up to the last 24 callers,
along with the time they logged on, the time they logged off, the
total amount of time they used, their baud rate, the channel they
were on, and more.

"SSFE" also includes a console password lock. With this, you can
safely leave your system alone. When you activate the lock, a
screen saver will appear (so no sensitive information can be
seen), but passersby will know that the BBS is up and running.
The only way to get past the password lock is by entering the
correct password, or rebooting the computer.

"SSFE" has a special paging system. You can give a "GOOD" key to
users, which gives them a special page (it sounds different, and
can be set to alert you every minute or so until they log off).
There is also a "BAD" key, which means you won't hear when the
user pages you. A "NOTIFY" key will alert you any time that the
user logs on. You can also turn the sound off.

There is also a "Profanity Monitor." If you wish, you can have
"SSFE" alert you any time a user enters input that is considered
by MajorBBS/Worldgroup to be profane. It is configurable so that
you can choose the what level (1 to 3) will cause you to be
alerted.

Lastly, there is a "System Hang Detector." This nifty feature
will alert you audibly if it detects that the system has hung. If
you do not respond, it will automatically re-boot the BBS. It
can't detect all types of crashes, but it will detect: -Infinite
loops, -Accidental pressing of the 'Pause' Key, -Various other
types of software errors that cause the system to hang.

We are expecting "SSFE" to sell for $79. This is subject to
change, however.

Also in the Works:
---- -- --- -----

Some programs that we are working on, that we may be releasing:

-Internet Accountant. This program will let you charge users
for full Internet access based on X hours per month. For example,
you can charge users for 20 hours per month; the program will give
your user credit for 20 hours, and at the end of the month will
take away whatever is left.

-Virtual Library. Now that more and more books are being
transfered to text files, this program will let you present the
text files to your users. You can choose from a number of
different categories, choose a selection from with the category
you chose. Once you have chosen a book, you can quickly move
forward/backward between pages, and chapters as well. Works well
with many types of text files, too.

-FingerPrint. A program that will help determine if users are
who they really are. It calculates a 'fingerprint' based on lots
of information to help find duplicate users, and users whose
accounts have been violated.
