                                CURRENCIES
The dollar drifted a bit lower against the deutschemark and
held steady against the yen Thursday afternoon as trading calmed down
following an active morning session that sent the dollar more than a pfennig
higher, participants said. Traders said the dollar still looked bid against
the deutschemark and would probably trade toward DM1.64 Friday on positive
U.S. economic data and reluctance to hold short dollar positions ahead of the
weekend with continued uncertainty in Russia.
The buck was quoted at DM1.6322 and Y106.00 at 2:30 p.m. CDT compared with
DM1.6335 and Y105.95 at 12:05 p.m. and DM1.6195 and Y105.43 at 6:45 a.m.
Dollar-yen trading was extremely thin Thursday, the last day of the
Japanese fiscal half year, but traders looked for activity to pick up on
Friday. "If dollar-mark gets a big boost, dollar-yen may get dragged with
it," said Paul Alley, yen trader at Long Term Credit Bank of Japan. "If we can
break above Y106.50, people are ready to take a shot at Y110."
