                              HyperACCESS
                              for Windows

                             by Tony Curro

One of the first communication programs that I used for OS/2 was
HyperACCESS/5. That was a few years ago. Since that time the product
has been constantly improved. Hilgraeve has recently entered the
Windows market. HyperACCESS for Windows was worth the wait.

Ease of installation and use are the first two things you will
notice. After that, it just gets simpler. This is a program for the
rest of us. I have been reviewing several Windows communications
packages over the last year. All, except for ProComm Plus for
Windows, are geared toward the corporate environment. HyperACCESS
works for everyone. If you call, mainframes, remote PCs, E-mail
services, or several of your favorite BBS this program is for you.

There is a phonebook that you design your way. There are three ways
to view the phonebook: details, statistics or icon. Sort in 5
different ways, or store and display in groups. You say you don't
like the phone number in column 2, but rather in column 4? Just drag
column 2 over column 4 and they will switch. Resize buttons, add
buttons, and so on. Even select a different icon for each entry from
the dozens supplied, or use your own creations.

To make a call you can either double click on an icon, or click on
several and have multiple calls placed. You are presented with
options on how you wish the calls placed. Even get callbacks from
    host computers automatically.

HyperACCESS supports hundreds of modems, and using the generic or
'user-defined' features also create one for an unlisted modem. It
supports all the popular protocols and terminal emulations. Includes
ready-to-use scripts to connect to CIS, MCI, and even some popular
BBS programs. HyperACCESS also can learn your logon sequence, and
use it the next time you place a call.

The Status Bar located on the bottom of the screen, shows you the
important information you want to see. Using Launch Pad, you can
create a message, while online, and then send the completed message.
If you have several modems, HyperACCESS will allow you to connect to
them at the same time. Each session has its own window, settings,
    etc.

Receiving and sending files was never easier. Using drag-and-drop
you can select files for transfer. Even save them for a future
upload. The receive window shows you more information than the
average transfer window. Here you will see the amount of files you
are receiving, and the total size and time. In addition you see how
each file is progressing. Another HyperACCESS feature is the virus
filter. It has a built-in virus checker that will scan for hundreds
of virus as you're doing your download; all of this without any loss
of throughput. The same applies when using it in the background. I
was pleased with the smoothness and quickness of the program no
matter what else I was doing.

HyperACCESS's Host mode will: answer calls, transmit files, allow
users to leave you messages, use password protection to allow
limited or unlimited access to your system. It will even allow you
to dial out while host is waiting for a call. You do not have to
terminate host mode. And, if you have several lines or modems,
HyerACCESS's Host will answer as many as Windows will support.

This is only the second Windows communication package that I was
truly pleased with. The one thing I found disturbing is the lack of
a signal when a transfer is done. The user has no way, unless he
looks at the modem or is watching the transfer, to know when it is
done. HyperACCESS is an excellent and well-done package. The wait
was worth it. Hilgraeve offers a 60-day return policy.
