                            WordPerfect v5.2
                              for Windows

                             by Tony Curro

WordPerfect Corporation has released version 5.2 of WordPerfect for
Windows (WPWIN). This version has many improvements and
    enhancements over 5.1.

Installation is a three step procedure. First you install WPWIN,
which requires 12MB for a full installation. The next two
installations are for Grammatik, which takes up 2MB, and Adobe Type
Manager (ATM), and its fonts. You do not have to install either of
these. Grammatik is accessible through WordPerfect.

    Features of WPWIN v5.2

        * Drag-and-drop text. WPWIN allows you to drag highlighted text
and drop it anywhere in your document without having to use the cut
    and paste commands.

        * QuickFinder. WPWIN has developed a fast indexing and
text-retrieval technology and built it right into the word
processor. You can build an index from directories, subdirectories,
and drives and quickly access that data whenever it's needed.

        * Mail Enabled. Send WP documents through e-mail using whichever
major mail package happens to be your favorite.

        * Grammatik 5
        * Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)
        * Adobe Type Manager (ATM)
        * New Macros and Button Bars, along with a QuickMenu to make
    Button Bars even more accessible.

They have improved on the envelope printing routine. Previously, you
could not print an envelope using the Windows driver. Now you can.
You also can have multiple return addresses and select from them. I
have a problem with printing the bar code below the address. No
matter what settings I choose, I cannot achieve this. Other programs
    allow it just fine.

I did notice several other things, which have to be worked on.
First, there is no macro editor. You can create a macro, but you
cannot edit one. You must create a new one. Also, there is no direct
support for ATM or TrueType fonts, when using the WordPerfect
drivers. I may understand TT, but ATM comes with WPWIN. There are
two alternatives around this. One is to use the slower Windows
driver. This can cause fonts, and text to type differently, if you
had created it, and saved it, while using the WordPerfect drivers.
The other is to purchase MoreFonts by MicroLogic Software. There is
an option in the WPWIN box to purchase this for $29.95. MoreFonts
does work, and will be reviewed in a future issue. However, I would
have liked to see a little program built-in to WPWIN that would
allow this without the added charge of another program. Finally, I
noticed that while using WPWIN, while doing a download with my modem
I was getting erratic results with the modem. Closing WPWIN solved
this, as restarting it caused it to reoccur. This has happened
several times. I think WPWIN is taking over much of the system when
it is active, whether full screen or iconized.

WordPerfect has always been a leader in the word processing field. I
was impressed enough to give WPWIN 5.2 a CTM Editor's Choice Award
for 1992. WordPerfect also has excellent technical support. Not only
is the call free, but the people are very knowledgeable about the
product. WordPerfect users should be pleased with this product.
However, I think WordPerfect has to develop the product as a TRUE
Windows program, and leave the DOS drivers behind. I use MS Windows
Printing System, which is a Windows print d river, and when I
activate WPWIN, using WP drivers, it disables this program, causing
my printer to restart. Trying to retain compatibility between DOS
and Windows via the printer drivers, will hamper the Windows
product. Yes, it is a big seller. But the need to switch drivers,
    can create problems for users.

WPWIN comes with a 90-day money-back guarantee. Licensed WPWIN users
can purchase a WPWIN 5.2 upgrade kit for $39.95 US/$48.CAN from
resellers or direct for WP orders at (800) 321-4566. Upgrade kit
includes an upgrade guide (small booklet), disks and documentation
for Grammatik and ATM. A full upgrade package with complete
documentation is available for $99.US/$120.CAN. Users of any other
Windows or DOS word processor costing at least $395.US can purchase
    a competitive trade-up package for $129.US/$155.CAN.

Finally, I would like to thank an associate of mine, Bud Adams, for
his help. Mr. Adams has been a longtime WordPerfect user, and uses
the product daily. He pointed out several things, which lead me to
    further testing.
