                     de HAVILLAND VAMPIRE

The de Havilland Vampire was the second turbo-jet
powered British fighter. The original name was the Spider
Crab and it was planned around a portly central nacelle and
twin booms to allow use of a short and less efficient
tailpipe for the Goblin jet engine. The Goblin was of the
centrifugal flow type and there for a greater diameter
than axial flow types. The first prototype flew September
1943, a mere 16 months after the start of the detail design.
The Mk 1 Vampire entered service in 1946 with a 2,700 pound
thrust engine and was followed by the Mk 3 with provisions
for underwing stores and modifications to improve
longitudinal stability. There were several models including
the Sea Vampire for carrier use and export models for
Switzerland.
