Hey Sarge..

Umm, I don't think you need the file SETUP46.EXE because.... I have a Tandy
2500 SX/33 as well, and about 5 months ago, I added 8 Megs of RAM to this
machine. After I installed the SIMMs, I turned on the computer. Before it
started to load DOS or anything, it went immediately into a Setup utility. It
detected that the hardware was not the same as the machine was already
configured for or something, and had you make the changes there. I don't have
the file Setup46.exe either, and it made the changes just fine at bootup after
installation.. and it does think now that I have 10 Megs of RAM..

Hi Sarge -

Not being familar with the 2500 but I do know some of the earlier Tandys
didn't use a setup program (such as the TX). These PCs automatically detect
when hardware and such is added to the computer. This is assuming that your
PC will allow a memory upgrade. You'll need to check your manual on that.

Jim,

Are you using the DeskMate that came in ROM on the 1000TL? If so,
DMVSVGA.RES is the wrong driver; you need DMVDVGA.RES. DeskMate
versions 3.0 to 3.2 (all right, 3.02) used one set of video drivers,
3.03 and later another set, and they are not compatible.

The video drivers for the older versions of DeskMate 3 are available
by ftp. Get file:

  musie.phlab.missouri.edu:/pub/trs/tandy1000/2501250.res

This is a self-extracting archive. 2501350.res is the NEW driver set
- 2501250.res is the old one. Let me know if that fixes things.

     From: TVDOG To: WESTIE

Jim & Ritcey,

It is of course possible to upgrade to upgrade a 1000TL or TL/3 to VGA.
Many (if not most) have done it. There is a minor problem in that the
BIOS on the 1000-series does not correctly set the video configuration
byte in low memory, causing some programs to misidentify the video. This
is easily fixed by a small program you place in your AUTOEXEC.BAT to set
the byte.

There was an article on this problem in the September 1990 issue of _PCM_
that contained a Basic program that you could type in, which would fix
the problem by creating a small program for AUTOEXEC.BAT. I believe you
can download this program from Delphi at a cost of $6 on your Delphi bill.
Alternatively, there are programs already assembled for use to fix this
on mono and color VGA at:

  musie.phlab.missouri.edu:/pub/trs/tandy1000/vgafix.zip

_PCM_'s Basic program is also called Vgafix, but the files on the ftp site
are not the same.

DeskMate supports the use of VGA in 640x480 16-color mode (standard VGA).
That is the best resolution you will get with SVGA and DeskMate (there is
a 320x480 256-color DeskMate video driver, but I don't know if anybody
ever wrote a program to use it). The VGA driver was not shipped with
most DeskMate versions. See my other post.

You can hook up a 28.8k modem to a .9 MHz CoCo if you want; just don't
expect 28,800 bps throughput. If the modem is an internal you don't have
to worry about the serial port handling the higher speeds; they have their
own ports built in. With an external, you mayhave to settle for a lower
setting, like maybe 9600.

There are many things that affect your throughput; Forget optimum speed
if you go through packet networks, like Tymnet. On a 9600 node, connected
to delphi, your fast modem will still look like 4800 on file transfers.

Just set you terminal to around 38.4k and let your modem connect at whatever
the host allows.

Hi, Frank!

No, I haven't taken the time to rearrange everything to try it. Since I
don't even have Windows on my old desktop computer, and I do most of my work
in DeskMate-interfaced programs on there, I don't have enough need for
Windows to want to run it that way. I didn't want to have to take Windows
off the 3800HD in order to run DeskMate, however, so I was happy to be able
to get the two to reside together happily with DeskMate as the primary one.
And maybe, someday, I may want it the other way around, so I am glad to know
that it can be done, and I saved a printout of your instructions.

In the meantime, however, another question came to mind: if I were to run
DeskMate from Windows, would my DeskMate-interfaced programs (DM Q&A Write,
Lotus-DM, DM Quicken, filePro-DM, MemoryMate-DM and pfs:First Pub for DM)
still run properly? These are the programs I use most heavily day in and day
out. Each one is in its own directory, but they "know" where to find needed
files in the \DESK directory because of the instructions in F7 Desktop menu.

I too have DeskMate I love it.

To download, once you get the message ok to download, hit F5 (options) then
hit Transfer. You will get a large menu asking for the following:

1. File name .. enter any dos type i.e. 8.3 also you can include a full path
name if you want the file put in another directory.

2. Send/Receive buttons .. ensure that receive is pressed.

3. ASCII/XMODEM buttons .. ensure that XMODEM is pressed.

4. some formating buttons for line feeds and carrage returns, these only
effect ASCII transfers for XMODEM you can just leve the default.

5. command to start transfer just leave emty

6. add carrage return, just leave emty.

7. time out I just accept the default.

8. Now you hit OK and the transfer will start and go untill it ends.

Note: when the transfer is ended you will get a message that says transfer
complete 1 file transfered. and that is all the rest of the screen is blank.
to find out where i am (i forget a lot) i just type a ? or menu.

Hope this helps.

Hey Sarge..

In your message there you stated "2MN X 9 60ns SIMMS".. I'm assuming
you meant 2M and not 2MN. That's not the right one if it was 2M.
I don't think they even make 2Mx9 SIMMs.. I know they make 2Mx36 tho..
Anyways, EXACTLY what you want are two 4Mx9 60ns 30 pin SIMMs. (Can I
get any more exact? :) ) The place I got mine from was Memory Express
out in City of Industry, CA.

And yes, to my understanding, the Tandy 2500 will only detect 2MB,
4MB or 10MB of RAM. If you try to enter any other value, I think it
changes to one of those three.

I had to ask someone what the x9 means; it means the number of modules
on the chip. (Whatever a module is.. :) ) But there's 9 individual
modules on the chip. I remember that from when I installed them..

And yes, going from 2MB to 10MB, I did notice a DRAMATIC improvement.
Especially if you're using disk caching, loading things into EMS, etc,
you'll definately notice a GREAT difference.. At least I did.

Hi, Ann!

   Welcome to our little Forum.

I can't quite give you step-by-step instructions, because my computer is
much older than yours, and my CD-ROM was a later add-on. However, if you
look around among your software directories, you will probably spot
something like MSCDEX or PLAYDISC, or such. Or you might find it in WinMate,
or Windows, and be able to click on it. At any rate, when you find it, it
should place something on your screen that resembles a drawing of the
controls on a VCR or CD audio player. For best listening to music CDs on the
CD-ROM, I recommend stereo headphones plugged into the audio jack.
Hopefully, somebody who knows your computer will jump in here and give more
precise instructions. I think you will really enjoy that new computer.

Thank you for your information about TELECOM. Actually, it was for my
friend. She has a TANDY1000 RL and just got herself a modem. I wanted
to download D-LITE for her. I tried it on my computer but she uses
a different disk than I use so I had to download it directly while on
her computer.

D-LITE supports Z Modem and is a good program for her to use to access
Delphi.

TELECOM was a good beginning program for her.

Again, thank you for your help.

happenstance that I saw your message to WALTBOYD. I'm no longer at Falsoft,
having very suddenly been relieved of my job as managing editor of PCM in

I have till Dec. 7th to register my copy. It's a great program

Ann,

Saw your not to me (actually to everyone, I think). I don't have much to
add to Sue's response; my CD-ROM (music) play program is Playcd.exe. It's
not a standardized thing, and some CD-ROM drives can't play music CD's, but
most can, and I would think a new one certainly would. Just fish around on
your disks. The CD-ROM adapter card may have some speaker jacks on the

Help! I'm a user from another platform who recently came into posession
of a TRS-80, Model II, and I could sure use some input as to how to
run this baby. There doesn't appear to be any Sig here for this Classic
Computer, but I figure one of you may have used one in years gone by.

The upper unit has the monitor and 8 inch (!) floppy built in, and
the lower unit has an 8 meg (I think) hard drive. There were no connecting
cable, but I found that a 50-pin ribbon cable from the lower connector
of the upper unit to the upper connector of the lower unit enabled
them to talk and the unit to boot. It has 64K and TRSDOS II Version
04.02.06, dated 1/1/83. After setting the time and date I get the
TRSDOS II Ready prompt. The question is, what do I do now? How can
I get a directory of what's on the hard drive and how can I run
anything? The usual commands don't do anything except give me error
messages. No disk came in the floppy, BTW.

Any suggestions here or in E-mail would be appreciated....

Is your old drive an IDE drive? If not did you get a new interface board for
the IDE drive? Did you remove or disable the old hard drive controller bd?
Most IDE interface boards cannot coexist with other kind of hard drive
controller boards. About your mouse-Sounds like somehow when you reinstalled
your old HD the controller board got set to the same IRQ as the mouse Port.
Mouse is probably COM1, IRQ 4 or COM2 IRQ 3. Usually HD is set to IRQ 2.

I don't know about shareware, but there are a couple free DeskMate programs.
Programs with graphical interfaces are generally more difficult to write
than DOS command-line programs. It was quite a while after Windows became
popular before there were very many shareware Windows programs.

There are probably fewer than 100 DeskMate programs in all, commercial,
shareware, and free. Prior to DM 3.00, DeskMate was Tandy's trade secret,
so there are very few (if any) third-party DM programs for old DeskMates.
The DeskMate Software Development Kit retails for $299 new, which is a
bit of a barrier also. Used copies of the SDK are starting to show up on
the market now, so over the next year or so there should be some new free/
shareware DeskMate applications, but at this point it's all vaporware. :-)
