     From: SCHROCKK To: ALL

I have a friend... <g>
We added a Microsoft compatible mouse, and made the changes in the setup.
The mouse works fine in Deskmate, but not in any "non-Tandy" programs,
specifically PC Paintbrush and Print Shop.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Deskmate, like Geoworks and Windows, will use the mouse for all its own
apps. If you want to use for other DOS programs, you'll need to load it in
the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. I have never understood why Tandy doesn't do
that before they ship their machines - at least they didn't with the older
ones. Surely they didn't think that people would use only Deskmate? <G>

I haven't tried in auto or config yet, but if I run the mouse.com that is in
the MS-DOS directory from the command line, and then try to run one of the
non-Tandy apps from the command line, the machine crashes.

Do I have to disable the mouse in the Tandy setup first, or does it have to go
into auto or config on the RL? I also tried mouse.com from Dos 3.3 and 5.0 but
the Tandy says "improper version" to both of those.

Digby,
I'm not an expert by far since I long ago abandoned Tandy, but I
remember having a similar problem with my Tandy 1000's not being able to
read some disks that weren't formatted on the Tandy. You might wanna format
a Disk on her machine then copy the files onto the newly formatted disk to
see if that's the problem.

You shouldn't have to disable the mouse under Deskmate to load it from the
command line or AUTOEXEC.BAT... My kids used the 1000 RLX with no problem
either way (Deskmate & AUTOEXEC). It was originally loaded via the
AUTOEXEC.BAT in DOS 3.3 and now works the same way With DOS 5.0. It uses the
MOUSE.COM from either version. Your friend definitely has some strange
goings-on, eh? Don't know what to tell you next. There are several other RL
users who may have a solution...

Yes, I tried the disks with the Model 4. The drive lit, and it cycled endlessly
with the disk? query. Perhaps there is no system file
on those disks. One disk is that auto-program generator I've seen before, the
other is more
likely a PC disk, not Tandy. Neither will boot it. But maybe I can locate a
Model 3 system disk locally.

I'd rather just move the thing. But I'd like to see it work first. The daisy
wheel printer works fine on my TI99, but I would sell that as well.

A friend dumped the Model 4 on me and said sell it or whatever, and keep the
money.
I told him I'd at least share the incredibly huge sum of money I'd make in such
a transaction! (evil grin!)

Com1/Com3 usually conflict because they use the same I/O address to pass
info into/out of computer so they will confict. If you set modem for Com2
should be ok with mouse. Windows is notorious for being bad at high speed
communications no matter what terminal program is being used. One other
problem is the Serial port chip(UART), 2100 probably doesn't have 16550
UART which has a buffer. The buffer gives the computer time to respond to
the modem without losing data(i.e. downloads) when transfering at high speeds,
Having this 16550 UART is vitally important especially in Windows and with a
slower computer that can't respond to an interrupt request in time. If your
DOS terminal programs(no Windows loaded) is messing up less or not at all
then the problem is most likely too slow response time of the computer.
Find out what kind of UART you have(Will be printed on one of the chips inside
the computer). Most likely 8250 or 16450 if so see if can replace them(there
should be two or more, one for each physical serial port). Good luck!

If I read your original message correctly you said she tried from a DOS
window from Windows? If so have her try from regular DOS prompt(ie quit
Windows completely first). If that works then the problem is Windows and
your program aren't cooperating. Your program tries to start and probably
tries to load a secondary file but can't find it because it's looking in
the wrong directory because of the way Windows works. She may need to
set up a batch file to specifically change the correct directory then run
the program or she may need to set up something called a PIF (Program Info
File). Look in your Windows manual on how to do this, it's fairly easy.
If this doesn't work I hope the different machine different format idea works.

     From: JAMESBENZ To: ALL

I recently bought a Tandy DMP 205 dot matrix printer which works
great. However, when starting wordperfect for windows with windows
print manager selected for printing I got a message that win2wrs had caused
a general protection fault in wpcshar2.dll. If I started wordperfect
using its own print driver, set to an epson compatible emulation, there was
no error. If I changed my windows driver to publisher's powerpack set to
an epson compatible emulation again there was no problem. But if I tried
to again select the specific tandy driver from within Wordperfect, I would
again get the gpf message. Obviously, the tandy driver is at fault.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a common problem with
print drivers? I plan to contact tandy and hope they will update their
driver, but of course powerpack works fine.

You've seem to have better success with Tandy printers and Windows than I
have. I'm using an old DMP-132 with my new PC (2100). The salesman assured
me that I would be able to use my 132 with Windows and that I should select
the IBM driver and make sure my printer was in the IBM mode. I haven't had
any success so I just use my printer with DOS programs and such. I would go
back and ask the Tandy folks but it took them three weeks of me driving back
and forth to them before I got the correct printer cable. I like Tandy PC's
but their sales reps don't know squat about what they sell (at least in my

I recently tried to get a second 5.25 360K floppy for my Tandy 1000 SL.
When I did however, the disk drive would not word due to two things:
1. The data connector on the drive (Fijitsu or something like that), was
upside down. When I tried putting the drive in upside down so that my data
cable would connect to it, I found my other problems. 2. The data cable
would not bend to the side enough to allow connection to the drive, and
3. Then the power cable would not reach to the opposite side to hook to the
drive. According to the tech at the store, all drives that he had were that
way (that is sort of the standard, both connections at the side). The drive
currently in the computer is a TEAC. I assume that if I can find a TEAC,
that it will word fine in my computer. Has anyone else had this problem?
Does anyone know of a type of disk drive that will work in this computer?
Does anyone know where I might find another TEAC drive? I would appreciate
your suggestions/help. Thanks!

James,

Earlier Tandy printers (pre-IBM and Epson), used different codes (now
known as Tandy mode), than the current IBM and Epson standards. Undoubtedly,
the Tandy driver included in Word Perfect is meant to accomodate those older
printers. My older Tandy DMP132 operated in Tandy mode and IBM mode - I only
use IBM for it now. My newer Tandy DMP240 no longer uses Tandy mode at all.
I have a choice of IBM or Epson for it. This means I ignore any Tandy
drivers found in my software programs. According to my copy of the Radio
Shack 1994 catalog, you should be using an Epson LQ-860/2500/2550 driver
with the DMP205. Check your printer manual, OK?

Hi Jeff,

I'm just going to take a guess here, because I haven't any experience
with Windows, but what they told you sounds right to me. However, I know
that most problems with the DMP132 seem to end up being the DIP switch
settings. (Don't let anybody tell you that you need a different cable - if
you have a standard parallel cable, it will work. The serial port above the
parallel port is for the Color Computer only).

Be sure to turn the printer off before changing any DIP switch positions.
This diagram is as you look at the back of the computer, and up = on, down =
off. These are the positions for IBM mode:

                     on on on

off off off off off off off

   2-1 2-2 1-1 1-2 1-3 1-4 1-5 1-6 1-7 1-8

   Here's what each switch controls:

2-1 and 2-2 determine whether it is to function as a parallel or serial
printer. The off position for both is for parallel.

1-1 in the on position is for IBM mode; the off position is for Tandy
mode.

1-2 in the on position is for carriage return only; in the off position
is for carriage return and line feed.

1-3 in the on position is for line feed and carriage return; the off
position is for line feed only.

1-4 in the on position is for 12-inch form length; the off position is
for 11-inch form length.

1-5 in the on position is for a 1-inch forced skip perforation; the off
postion does not force skip perforation (lets the software govern this).

1-6 in the on position is 1/8th inch line spacing; in the off position is
1/6th inch line spacing.

1-7 in the on position is IBM character set 2; in the off position is IBM
character set 1. This is a matter of personal preference and either one will
work. I like character set 2.

1-8 has to do with the buffer, and I never understood exactly what it
does, but basically it tells the printer what to do when the buffer is full.
Some erratic behavior can occur when it is set to on when in IBM mode.

Jeff, have you ever heard of Print Chief? It's a cute little software
program written by a man in Florida who got frustrated with - guess what? -
his DMP132 :-) He decided he could outfox the printer and quit messing with
the DIP switches. It'll make the little DMP132 dance! Now it's been upgraded
to work with all the different Tandy DMP models. It doesn't make the printer
do anything that it can't do without Print Chief, but it makes it easier.

Even though I have the newer printer, I always did like the DMP132 and
never had any problems with it. Now I keep it loaded with labels and use a
little BASIC program from PCM to quickly dash off one or several whenever I
need them. (I later compiled the program from QuickBASIC 4.5).

Anyway, I hope this helps solve the problem you've been having. Let me
know either way, OK?

Hi Sue -

I checked my printer dip switch settings and they are exactly like you
outlined in your message. I've tried various software settings in Windows
and the only thing that I can conclude is the DMP-132 doesn't like what gets
filtered through the Windows printer driver. When I switch over to DOS and
print, everything is fine although I can't print anything that was created
while in Windows. I've heard of the software Print Chief, I've even got the
issue of PCM where it was reviewed. I've written something similar which
suits my needs even though it's not as elaborate as Print Chief. I'm kind of
at a loss for what to do about this printer problem. It's not a great big
deal but some of the software bundled with Windows is useful but it's use is
limited to that which doesn't need printing. Maybe I could call Tandy Tech
support and see what they have to say. I definitly don't have anything to
lose by that. If you can think of anything else, let me know. Thanks!

If you wish I'll Email you a printer control code program I wrote. I used
it a lot when I had a Tandy DMP-130A, but it should work with your DMP-132
with no problems.

Tell me, did they still put the DIP switches on the DMP-132 in the back so
that you have to unthread the paper in order to change them? If so, you'll
have some idea why I wrote the printer utility. It's written in GW-BASIC
and functions with the printer set in IBM emulation mode. It's nothing
elegant, but it works. You could think of it as a "poor man's PrintChief"
program. I now use a version of it tailored for my current printer, a

     From: WESF To: ALL

I am interested in finding out what the jumper/DIP/switch settings are on
my Tandy 1000 SL. Exampler: How do I disable LPT1? How do I disable the
onboard FDD controller? How do I change the FDD controller mode to set it
for a 720K drive? (or does it automatically switch?) Anyway, I would like
to know what I need to do to change the above listed things, and even more.
Maybe you can help me with some of the above listed, or know where I can
get a reference book or something that lists them all. Anything ould be
appreciated.

Thanks,

Wesley

Jeff,

In regard to InkJet printers, I'm giving the matter renewed deep thought.
PC World recently had some cost-per-page comparisons that are leading me to
rethink the matter. (Like --- maybe a little noise can be tolerated, in the
interest of economics!) :-)

I've run untold, countless numbers of pages through my Panasonic KX-P1124. I
have a "Descendants Tree" report that I'll only print out during the cooler
months of the year. The report is that long, and the printer becomes that
hot that I position a small fan over it to help keep it cool during the
process. In short, I've heaped a great deal of abuse on my DMP from time to
time with no apparent damage. It just keeps on chugging away!

The one thing I don't like about my Tandy 1000TX in relation to printer
hook-up is that the printer port requires a parallel cable with a Centronics
connecter on the PC end, but the 1000TX has no sort of lock-in clips to
secure the cable connector. So, as a result, the connection sooner or later
loosens itself and the printer produces garbage. This always seems to happen
when one of my children is working late to print out a report assignment from
school that's due the next day. :-(

Wesley,

Try to find a recent issue of PCM magazine (that's PCM magazine, not PC
magazine). Look for the ad by Micro Systems located in York Springs, Pa.
They're very knowledgeable about Tandy PC's. They have a book entitled,
"1000's Tech Note & Jumper Manual". The Micro Systems phone number for
questions and info is (717) 528-8493.

Hope this helps.

Well, I kind of lean towards the tip getting clogged because of the way it

heavy use on the day shift and I don't know about it. <G> Thanks!

Hi Stan -

That's one thing I always keep in the back of my mind when I wish I had a
laser printer or the like, cost per page! It would be nice for final drafts
of a document or to provide a professional look to a letter or other serious
correspondance but those moments are few and far between.

You don't have a Tandy Printer? The Tandy printers have those clips that
will hold the cable in place. Actually, when it comes to the cable, I'm was
still using the cable that I originally bought for my Model IV. When I
bought my TX, I ask about the printer cable. The Radio Shack rep showed me
one and it looked similar to the one I had (with my Model IV). When I asked
him what the difference was, he said about $19. It was just the fact that it
was for their "new" TX line made it cost more. I'll never forget that in a
million years. At least he was honest about it.

Hi Jeff,
you had given me some advice a while back about putting 2 modems in a 2100
and asked that I let you know how things went. Well everything is working
fine. The problem was, if you disable an external seril port on COM2 like I
did you cannot skip it and put a modem on COM3 ittakes the default IRQ of
COM3 but the address of COM2. Same if you were to put a modem in COM4, it
drops to COM3. I still don't have it all clear, all I know is I have use of
my mouse and I can recieve incomming calls to my computer on one line while
I am online using the other modem. I am very pleased with the 2100 and would
highly recommend it. I installed a CD-ROM and that was a breeze.

Hi Rob -

And here we were looking for something complicated! <G>

That sounds like something I experienced way back when I owned a Model IV.
All I had on it was a drive A and I got a deal on an external floppy. I
asked the Shack people if I could do that and they said yes. But of course
it didn't work. After getting frustrated, I finally got in touch with a
Shack techie who explained the situation to me. He said the external drive
would be recognized as drive C by the computer. But he said because I didn't
have a drive B, the computer never bothered to look any further and thus
wouldn't recognize my drive C. My only option then was to mount it
internally as drive B. They did it for free being they gave me the bum
advice to begin with and I was happy. I'm glad things worked out for you!

I'm not sure if I quite understand it myself but the clock speed is the
frequency at which the clock chip operates and remains constant. This
frequency is then divided up and used by the various subsystems of the PC.
One of these subsystems is the timer. I would suppose the V-20 chip does
something to enhance the timer or something. How's that for a firm "I'm
don't really know but here's my guess". <G> Maybe someone else will step up
and explain.

I just recently tried to install a second 5 1/4 360K floppy in my 1000SL.
Unfortunately, when I tried to install it, I had a lot of problems. First
the cable wouldn't reach far enough to one side to get to the second drive,
then when I finally got that to reach, I found out that the power cable was
not long enough to reach to the power connector. To make a long story short,
I was told that all of the disk drives that this particular company had (all
pulls from other systems), were aligned with the power connector and data
cable all on one side. What I am wondering, is my TEAC drive different from
all others, or is there some kind that is the same layout (data cable in the
center, power connector just to the left of it), as the TEAC. Does anyone
know where I might find a TEAC cheap, or know of another that brand that
might work in place of it? The second floppy would help some programs work
much better since all I have is my single 360K TEAC drive. Thanks if you
can help

Sue,

I, too, often had the same thought. I first spotted PCM at the RS store
where I bought my 1000TX in late 1987. I had to almost rip the subscritpion
form out of the hands of the Salesperson there. In light of all the $$$ I
had just spent on my system (CPU, monitor, printer w/cable & paper, PC stand,
etc.) they should have _given_ me a one-year subscription! If that had been
the policy there would have been a beneficial effect to all parties. After
all, I have learned a lot about PC's from my subscription to PCM over the
years.

Hi Serapions -

The assembly language book I have is basically a tutorial. It explains many
of the different instructions. As you go through the book, you code all
these different modules that help demonstrate the instructions and syntax of
that particular chapter. By the time you get to the end of the book, you
will have coded a full scale assembly language program that is designed to
read, edit and write disk sectors.

I've never done anything serious with assembly language but I've tinkered at
writing TSR's, a random number generator and various little routines to see
how certain interrupts work. There's awesome power there, if you every get
the hang of it but you can get yourself into serious trouble if you overlook
one small detail. But mostly assembly is FAST! I wrote a little piece of
code, in GWBasic, that would count off the number of combinations there are
in the Pick 6 Lotto, and I let the program run for 6 days and it still
wasn't finished. I did the same thing in assembly and it ran in under four
hours. Now that's speed!

Hello Jeff,
Please tell me the name the tutorial book you have. I've tried writing
programs in assembly a few times, but never really got into it, too tedious.

I did take a class in GW-basic, and it was beneficial to learn about
basic commands and structured programming. With quickbasic you can write
the program in "Basic" and then compile it, to run as a machine language
program.

I'm pretty busy just now with my automotive class. Using "Basic" would
enable me to write programs quickly, whereas "Assembly" would take up all
of my time. I have read some interesting books on technical programming
in "BAsic", and I think it is fascinating to be able to type math problems
into the computer and have them solved instantaneously. Some of the math
programs that I have written are: multiplication, fractions, logrithms,
exponential equations, vectors, random numbers, graphs, and simultaneous
equations.

Tell me about the mach. lang. commands and interrupts. Serapions
