     Win 3.1 DMP310 dvr?
     From: KA5S To: ALL

I'm in a bind of a quandary; I have a DMP310 printer which I am using with my
2500 SX25. Which Win 3.1 printer driver should I select for this?

So far I have struck out, with results ranging from impossible to
illegible!

Eric, I'm with you on the next system. I will put my own together, too.
Big tower, lots of bays and a large power supply. I have been surprised
that the little 70 watt supply in the system has help up, especially having
the machine packed. I like the 80 meg WD hard drive, too. I added a Conner
162 meg drive that has worked flawlessly.
I never heard claims to being fully Sound Blaster compatible. I knew
that some of the systems were being packaged with the SB Basic card. I
bought a SB Basic and then replaced it with a Pro Audio Spectrum 16. I
like the PAS better. I am glad RS gave you everything that was coming to
you. <G> I got my system home and was missing the mouse <real cruddy
mouse-replaced immediately> and the modem. <Grrr> Oh well, the system
really is a solid performer. It has handled anything I have thrown in or at
it. Let me know if you get the extra 8 megs.

I am still wanting to add the 8Mb but (don't laugh) I want to pay <=$300 for
them. But this still leaves me in a quandry. The cash I put toward this RAM
will make it that much more difficult to get the new motherboard during the
foreseeable future and who is guaranteeing motherboard prices won't take off
and go into orbit soon. No one, last time I checked. As only 4Mb of the
2500's 6Mb is transportable, not getting any more RAM will be a downgrade on
the new system. And even with a DX2/66, just 4Mb is no good for OS/2. But
getting those 8Mb will commit me to getting 8Mb more (increment of 4 y'know--
who says there's no advantage to a 386SX) for a total of 20Mb. Great for OS/2
but the cost of 16Mb will also buy the motherboard. I'd rather not take the
new system to 8Mb since I'll then be maxed out (8 sockets), have 4 excess
SIMMs when I upgrade, and have spent more in the long run. So for now I'm
taking long looks at motherboards and check memory prices often, but otherwise
going nowhere until I figure out what my next move will be.

The mouse that came with my system is good enough for me but I still want to
get a new one mostly for better mouse software, a bigger mouse body, and to a
lesser extent maybe the 3rd button. I was never promised a modem but I was
already happy with the modem I was then using.

I would have wanted to recover some of the costs of the new stuff by selling
off the present system but since the monitor and floppy drives are going to be
moved over that won't really be an option. Oh well, after months I'm still
unable to find anyone interested in my old modem and printer.

Dairylady,

Have you tried the program, STAMP.COM, from the Hex code MISAL published in
the September PCM. It works. Very nice little utility. I'm a sucker for
little utilities like that. I hope Mike does more.

TWINKLE.BAS is nice too. Those are the only two programs I've looked at in
the latest issue, so far.

Stan,

Nice to hear from you. Any cooler there lately?

No, I haven't even considered typing in STAMP.COM. I gave up on that type
of program some time ago, because of bad luck with them. In addition,
the article is titled DOS 6.0, so I sort of skipped by it. Right now the
only one I have is Greg's VGAFIX1.COM. DGM.COM by Bob Jack (way back when)
never did work on my computer; SPINTEST.COM by Greg Schultz worked fine on
the MFM/RLL hard disk card, but then I got the IDE hard disk card and it
quit. On the other hand, MLite wouldn't work *without* VGAFIX1.COM. So,
since I know you have DOS 3.2, if you say it works, maybe I should go ahead
and type that one in - it looks quick enough and it has a self test in it.

I have been planning on typing TWINKLE.BAS, though. Just haven't done it
yet. Would you believe I've been over on the Genealogy SIG and they've
actually got me working on my family history? I've found some interesting
stuff, too. It's infectious!

Just so you won't think I've quit on BASIC, though, I've recently gotten
some more back issues of PCM and some article reprints from out of print
issues. I found a fascinating old program from Raymond C. Yancy (one of my
favorite authors - whatever happened to him) featuring a Sopwith Camel
graphic (my husband is a private pilot, presently building an airplane of
his own). Anyway, it was written in TGA Screen 5, and is fraught with paint
bleeding problems in EGA/VGA Screen 7. I've been working on fixing it, and
I'm about at my wits end because I don't know trig. I've been considering
ringing in your help, but I've been too stubborn. My husband caught me
reconstructing Yancy's drawings on graph paper, and said, "Building an
airplane?" I guess I just got red faced, and stammered some stupid answer.
If I finally give up, I'll let you know...

Sue,

Is the GENEALOGY SIG you menioned on Delphi? How do I get to it? I should
look into it.

I've got the CAMEL.BAS program, but I've probably not done anything since
getting VGA. Here's something I remembered from runnung it under TGA,
however. Look at Figure 4 on page 52. Of the four views shown there three
displayed fine, but the fourth (the one in the lower right corner) had paint
bleed-over. And I never could get it straightened out.

Anyway, what I learned from that program about translations & rotations of
solid 3-D figures helped me at work when we were simulating the vulnerability
of the M1A1 Abrams tanknd the M2/3 Bradley fighting vehicles. So, for me,
it was worth the effort working with CAMEL.BAS.

I've heard that with the micromainframe bd it is possible to get UMB's by
loading
a program like QRAM before loading the EMM driver. but it is a clunky way of
doing
it. Personally I have use the INTEL ABOVE Board ISA in my 1000SX to provide UMB

memory and of course EMS memory. This board is a wonderful little board that
goes up to 32MB using SIMMS, 3/4 length so it fits in our short slots. Runs in
an 8 or 16 bit slot-provides only expanded in 8 bit slot. With this board I
have
about 120K of UMB's not including the page frame and I am able to load
everything
high that I need to using QRAM and/or DOS's DEVICEHIGH command. Board costs
about $220 with 0K. Used to be $180 with 0K. A less expansive alternative is
INTEL's Matched Memory Classic Memory board. Only 8Mb total, and can't map as
much UMB memory but it works well and is only $120. I have tried both of these
boards in a TX also and they work well. With the $120 board you have to tell
it is installed in an IBM MODel 30. Intel says this must be because the Tandy's

have funny bus timings like the Model 30.

One other board is by INVISIBLE software but I have no experience with it but I
have heard that it works well but not as flexible as the INTEL boards.

ALL the boards are Hardware LIMS 4.0 compatible. One other board that doesn't
work in the old Tandy 1000's(SX & TX) is the RAMPAT + by acculogic. I worked
with that board/company a lot only to find out that their is a compatibility
problem related to the way tandy designed the bus and the timing on it and its
relation to the built-in Tandy graphics. Even using a VGA setup doesn't help.

Good luck with your customer/friend.

Stan,

Well, on the one hand it's good to know I'm not the only one with the
paint bleeding problem with CAMEL.BAS. On the other hand, it's not so good
to know it ain't gonna be easy to fix. The parts that paint in color 14
(yellow) seem to be the biggest problem. That includes the elevator and the
wheels. The elevator seems like it should be simple enough if I can just
find the "gap" where the paint is getting through the outlines. The formula
he uses for the wheels is where I really must admit defeat, because I don't
understand it. This is the only one of Yancy's programs that has given me
trouble. It was easy to fix the paint bleeding problem in QB-1000.BAS.
That's really neat that you were able to use the material to help you at
work.

Stan,

I typed STP-MAKE.BAS, ran it until it finally found all my errors and
built the STAMP.COM file, then tried it out on a file. Very nice. Then I
tried it out using wildcards for a group of files. That doesn't work. Too
bad, it would have made it even more useful. But I did put it in my DOS
directory, so it works from everywhere.

I also followed Mike's suggestion to save the working part of the file to
BASCOM.TMP for future reference. Maybe someday I'll retype all the DATA
lines from DGM.BAS, using this file builder with its CRC checking to root
out the errors, and then try it again - but it's a long one.

Stan,

I retried CAMEL.BAS with the heading, pitch, and bank as shown in each of
the drawings, and for me, they all bleed. If I use parameters that have me
looking down on the airplane (pitch 90), it doesn't bleed. I still think the
wheels are the biggest problem. He really can't use the circle command
because it has to be able to recompute the shape for each perspective. But
somehow the math has to take higher resolutions into account, and I don't
have the faintest idea how to do that. Just on the outside chance it would
make a difference, I ran it in QuickBASIC and Brand X BASIC <g> too - no
change except that it runs - and bleeds - a lot faster in QuickBASIC.

After Greg sent me the GAMES.SEQ file for JUKEBOX.BAS, I set it up with
just my collection of Yancy programs. I wanted to give them some sort of
special treatment to set them apart, because they are all very well done. I
have added a few GEs, however.

Off the top of my head, you could use a batch file similar to the one
posted below if you want to use wildcards. Thanks to the power of the FOR
command. . . :-)

        FOR %%X IN (%1) DO STAMP %%X

If you want to support multiple wildcards, you might try this:

        :START
        IF "%1" == "" GOTO END
        FOR %%X IN (%1) DO STAMP %%X
        SHIFT
        GOTO START
        :END

Don't forget to use two percent signs for the X environment variable (%%X)
and one percent sign in %1 (the number one).
