Sue,

After my daughter Katie goes off to college with the (future) '486 and I'm
left with my trusty old 1000TX, in three more years I'll be faced with the
same situation with regard to my son Ross. Looks like I better get used to

Take the upgrade (Step-up) and load it into a directory on your hard drive,

Just a hint - if they don't seem too enthusiastic about that 10%-off

be "participating" stores. You shouldn't have any trouble at a company

The speed is relative to the needs of the user. Most do not really need

The CONFIG.SYS file is ASCII. It can be "edited" with any ASCII editor. This
is also true of batch files. For instance, using DOS' Editor, I could:

@ECHO OFF
CD C:\MYDIR
MYFILE.EXE /p /e 'Launch the program with command switches
CD \ 'Return to the root directory
Echo The program has been unloaded
Echo Have a nice day!

If I called the batch file GO.BAT, I would only need to type GO to invoke
it.

Hi Serapions -

The CONFIG.SYS file you refer to is a file used by the computer at boot up
time. I'm no technical wizard but my explaination of CONFIG.SYS instructs
your computer to behave in certain ways. This is the file that tells your
computer to load drivers (e.g. lets you use a mouse, display extended ansi
graphic characters, among other things). If you wish to learn how to use and
apply DOS commands, I would recommend a book by Van Wolverton called
_RUNNING MS-DOS_. It's available at most major bookstores for about $20-$30.
He covers the topic of DOS quite well. This book documents step by step
usage of the DOS commands with plenty of examples. It's not highly technical
either as he explains it in down-to-earth language. I hope this will help!

Hi, again, Serapions -

As far as I can tell, you should be able to run any version of DOS on your
PC. I don't think that you would be able to download it anywhere, though, as
that would likely be illegal. Now that DOS 6.0 (and even 6.2) is now out, I
don't think you would even be able to get DOS 5.0. But, sure, if you got the
disk space, you should be able to run a newer version of DOS.

     GW-BASIC Patch
     From: DAIRYLADY To: MISAL

Hi Mike,

We just got home from our Thanksgiving visit to our kids, and found PCM
amongst the mail. In "Letters to PCM," reader Gerald Roessel asked for the
patch for GW-BASIC 3.20.20 that came with Tandy 1000 SL and TL computers -
the version that had the 8- and up-arrow key problem. PCMs editors couldn't
find the patch or the issue it appeared in and asked for help.

The answer is: PATCH BASIC.EXE,96A2,A483C702,FCA44747 <Enter>. It
appeared in the December 1990 issue of PCM, in The Answering Service column
by Gregory Schultz, page 138. I had written it down in my BASIC manual at
the time.

   Hope this helps.

RE: config.sys and dos (Re: Msg 22524)
     From: DAIRYLADY To: SERAPIONS

I also have a 1000 TL which I like very much. This particular model of
computer has the kernel of DOS and DeskMate in ROM, which can cause some
unique problems if you upgrade your version of DOS - mainly that you will
lose DeskMate unless you also upgrade it to the so-called "stand-alone"
version. You will also lose your Music and Sound applications unless you
take some very careful steps to preserve them from the old version that you
now have (read the documentation that comes with the stand-alone DeskMate
thoroughly before installing it).

If you stay with the original DOS and DeskMate, and are not having any
memory problems with any of your software, you do not necessarily need a
CONFIG.SYS file, because files and buffers are specified in your SETUPTL
file. And your mouse driver is specified for DeskMate applications in the
F10 Setup menu. Or, you may already have a CONFIG.SYS file that was created
by some of your software when you installed it. Before you try to write one,
you should check your C:\ root directory and see if there is one. If so,
look to see what it contains.

Let us know if you're having any problems with the system as it is now,
and what the CONFIG.SYS file says, if it exists, OK? There are plenty of
folks here that can help you tailor one to your needs if you are having
problems.

     DOS 6.2

I have a Tandy 1000 SL and am interested in upgrading to a later version of
DOS than 3.3, which is what I have. My computer has 640K and a 360K 5 1/4
floppy drive only - no hard drive. Is it possible to get DOS 6.2 on a 360K
disk?, and if it is can I run it without a Hard drive? I have only seen it
sold on 3 1/2 1.44. If you can help me with this question, it would be
appreciated. Also, if anyone else has a 1000SL, let me know what you think
of it.
