Is it worth upgrading to 5.0?
     From: ANDY126 To: ALL

Before I go off the deep end and backup my hard drive - reformat it -
and install 5.0 Dos... Is it really worth it?? Will "restore" that was
done with 3.30 work with the 5.0 when trying to restore files?

I've read/heard horror stories with Dos 5.0 and Deskmate....can I get them
to work together?

I have a 1000 TL3, 80 meg Hard-Card, VGA, 760k & 1.44K, 128k mem upgrade
(which seems useless!), mouse, etc.....

Any help would be appreciated...thanks....Andy :)

To unzip a file you have to download another program, PKUNZIP, from the PC
SIG Database. The newest version of PKUNZIP is version 2.04 something-or-other

When you download that, just type in the program name, and it will explode
(unzip) automatically. Then, to unzip the program that you downloaded, type

PKUNZIP (filename)

That's the EASIEST way to do it, there are a few other switches and commands
that you can add on, but they aren't necessary, just optional.

Re: RLX and DESKMATE

Well, my RLX/HD also had the Deskmate program, until I installed the
Dos 5.0. Once that happened, the Deskmate would no longer boot with the
ROM, and it was necessary to get the Standalone DESK.EXE version.

But then, there's also an RLX version out that will acknowledge the
ROM Deskmate under 5.0. Tandy produced two version of the machine.

I got the older one.

If your DM works under the 5.0, then you got the newer one.

     From: SWITCHTECH To: ANDY126

First - DO backup your hard drive - that is ALWAYS a good idea when
making a major change.

Second - DON'T reformat your hard drive. DOS 5.0 will install to the
formated drive (as long as you have about 5 MB of free space for the
process). It will create a directory called OLDDOS (or something like
that - it's been a while) that makes it fairly easy to restore to the
original setup.

Third - if you DO have one of the machines that loads Deskmate from ROM,
then you may want to read MSG # 22020 from VinceGSR to ActionMAX. That
may be a solution.

      - if you DON'T have one of the machines that loads Deskmate from
ROM, then you will probably not have a problem with Deskmate and DOS
5.0. The STAND ALONE version of DeskMate (the one that folks like me,
with a Tandy 3000 - didn't even come with Deskmate - have to buy) works
fine with MS-DOS 5.0.

I don't remember how the TL/3 is setup. That sounds like one that has
the DOS/Deskmate in ROM. If it is, and you can't get the Deskmate in
the ROM to work with 5.0 (good chance it won't) then you'll need to get
the Stand Alone version of Deskmate.

(And yes, since you have a VGA card on your system, the 128K memory
upgrade is nearly useless. - About like the 128K upgrade I installed in
my T3000 before I put the 2 MB of SIMMS in the machine. Once the 2 MB
of RAM was in the System, the Memory on the motherboard was unused (in
fact, I now have 0K RAM on the motherboard)).

And Stewart has a very good point - you might want to just go for MS-DOS
6.0. It's supposed to be even easier to install and use.

If you are upgrading from anything less than DOS 5.0, AND you have a 386SX
class machine or better, then the upgrade to DOS 6.0 would certainly be
worth it. I have 5.0 and will purchase 6.0 tomorrow, if I can find it.
Since I am not familiar with a 286 machine or smaller, I can't tell you if
an upgrade would be an advantage, but I would think so. Anyhow, I would now
consider DOS 6.0 instead of 5.0. The price is $49 or less almost anywhere.
What machine do you have? I have a Tandy 2500 SX/25 and love it.

Everything seems to be relative in this business. I use QEMM on a
Magnavox with CD-ROM drive, etc and get 620K. 386MAX is on a Dell 486sx and
it gets 619k. Everything I have runs fine. DOS 6 might tweak a little more
but it wouldn't be worth the effort. Besides, I could probably get a little
more with QEMMor 386. Haven't really tried anything too exotic.

I've followed the DOS 6 topic on Prodigy rather closely and the consensus
seems to be that the third party utilities do a slightly better job over all.
I can wait awhile. :)

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I've been busy and this is the first
time I've been since February. The Drivparm command for config.sys for 3.5in
drive on HX is as follows: DRIVPARM = /D:a /C /F:b /H:c /N /S:d /T where a=
drive #(A=1, B=2 etc). b=Drive type=2 for 3.5in 720K drive. This is all you
should need but for your info H:c is # of heads, N would mean non-removable
ie hard-drive, S=# of sectors/track and /T:n(oops forgot the :n above) means
# of tracks/side. AS Example if drive A is your 3.5in 720K drive you would
use the following in your config.sys(OOPS AGAIN, A=0, B=1 ETC) , anyway the
command is DRIVPARM = /D:0 /F:2. MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE SPACES OTHERWISE
IT MAY NOT WORK. I couldn't get it to work until I read somewhere about the
spaces being important around the = sign and inbetween parameters. Good luck

I went to DOS 5.0 and still used Deskmate. I have both the version that came
with my Tandy Computer (1000RLX HD) and the stand alone version. I have run
the Deskmate (ROM) with the DOS 5.0 (non-Tandy). Several considerations must
be made. First you must copy the SETUPRLX command onto a floppy. Then you
must realize that with the DOS 5.0 you will have to boot from the HD using a
config.sys and autoexec.bat file. That is setup in the SETUP. The thing I
ended up doing was installing DOS 5.0. Using the floppy returning to the
SETUP then booting with the Deskmate ROM. Using the install in the DESKMATE
ROM reinstalling Deskmate. Going back to the SETUP and rebooting from C:
(loading the config.sys and autoexec.bat). The Deskmate version has the
Desk.com which takes you to the Deskmate directory and pgm manager screen. I
wrote simple batch files so that no matter where I was as when I went to
Deskmate it would load with Deskmate in the deskmate Directory. Now, one
other problem, which I am so glad I eliminated... The original Tandy version
of DOS 3.3 partitioned my HD into 32 Meg Drive and an 8 Meg Drive (I have a
42 meg HD.) I copied all of my pgms out (backed up individually not a full
drive backup) then I let DOS 5.0 reformat my hard drive into one drive
instead of 2. Also, you will most likely need to copy out of the present DOS
you have the mouse.com and mouse.sys as DOS 5.0 does not contain mouse
support. These are generic drivers and I just copied them to my new DOS 5.0
directory and load the driver as a device in my config.sys. Anyway, I am
using DOS 6.0 now but the same is true. Be sure that you have all your
programs backed up and allow plenty of time to do all of this as it takes
time but it is well worth it. If you have any more questions please let me
know.

Since I don't have upper memory access on this 286 (aside from loading

Mark,

DR DOS is a separate operating system with its own command structure.
Many of the commands are the same as MSDOS, however. You will probably need
to peruse the manual to become familiar with which are the same and which
are different. DR also comes with SuperStor, a disk drive compression
program.

Andy,

DeskMate is a kind of funny thing. Tandy never meant it to compete with
Windows on the more powerful machines. It was meant for the so-called low-end
machines up to the 286s - and people new to computing. But it is so useful
and flexible, and the fact that it gets completely out of the way when you
are running a non-DeskMate interfaced DOS program makes it especially nice.
Very few people who have DeskMate ever want to give it up, even though they
may want to upgrade their equipment or DOS. It did what it was intended to
do, but we all want it to stay current and compatible. How do we get Tandy
to redevelop an interest in DeskMate?

Re: Tandy and Upgrades

I asked the Tandy guy we purchased our computers from why they didn't
supply an upgrade for Deskmate and Dos 5.0 either, and his reply was'
basically that since computer are constantly changing...it's not
mandated that they should keep a system up to "current state of the
art". You get what you get when you buy it.

Their solution to the Dos 5.0/Deskmate problem is to tell people to buy
the Standalone version, which is the quickest, if not the cheapest
solution, since they refuse to supply it.

Those who don't want to do that try to copy the ROM Deskmate prior to the
5.0 installation. A few apparently, have succeeded, but his seems
to be the exception rather than the rule.

I was looking at a new PC at one of my local Radio Shack stores. I asked the
manager if he knew who manufactured the hard drive included with the system.
He said it was manufactured by Tandy. At my request, he opened the case.
Once under the hood, the first thing I checked for was to see that the CPU chip
was rated for the MHz speed was at least as high as the speed it was being run
at (it was). I also looked at the hard drive and saw it was made by Western
Digital. I asked him about that and he said "we own so much of them that you
can say it's ours". He has given me lots of incorrect information before so I
thought I might ask around: does Tandy _really_ have a significant ownership
interest in Western Digital?

Streeter,

I put VGA in a 1000SX last year and got that memory back automatically. I've
since removed the VGA and am back to about 560K after start up. Maybe your
friend is loading the VGA bios and coming out with about the same memory he
had before. I usually didn't load the bios and got by with just the VESA
extensions loaded, which made most picture viewers work well enough.

In any case that TGA memory is base memory, as it is part of the first, and
only, 640K. It's the 128K (I think?) video upgrade that is not base memory
and is only used by TGA.

Actually, that 32K of memory used by TGA on a T1000SX is automatically
converted to conventional memory. If you check the memory (use CHKDSK)
you should see that the 32K is being used by DOS now.

Under TGA, the machine reports that 624K (638976 bytes) is available
(the TGA only uses 16K in TEXT mode... 640-16=624). With a VGA adapter,
you should see that it now has a total memory of 640K (655360 bytes).

The T1000TL and later machines had an option of adding 128K above the
640K for video - which is basically unusable if you aren't using the
Tandy graphics.

a WD chipset, and enough memory to run Windows in 256 colors.
I called the Microsoft BBS, and downloaded a file for a NEWER
WD chipset, I loaded it, and ran windows.... SURPRISE SURPRISE!
I HAVE 256 colors in 640x480!!!!! EXCEPT that there is one problem...
I may have stunning colors now, but the screen redraws are slower than
my 1000hx used to run Deskmate. I called Western Digital, and thier BBS
and downloaded some drivers that they said would work on my Chipset...
BS! Windows wouldn't run at all... it brought me back to the C:> promt.
Then I called Tandy ( long distance, no toll free #, and they put me on hold
for 20 minutes. They told me that Wetern Digital had sent them
an updated driver for their computers to run Windows in 256 colors.
Well.. they couldn't send it to me, but suggested that I contact my
local Radio Shack. Which I did, and I got to talk with the brain dead.
The "computer specialist" (salesman, computer pusher) didn't know what
the hell I was talking about, and said he would call Tandy. Well...
Seems as if everyone at Tandy is brain dead. Anyways... if someone
out there has the driver, or know how I can get it.
Could you please send me the info, and details? Thanks.

Hi Andy! With the TL/3 I would not recommend upgrading tp DOS 5 or 6. The
maximum RAM that your system ca address is 1 Meg. I don't think you want to
give up any more RAM or disk space to DOS, especially since, if I remember
correctly the TL/3 has DOS in
ROM. DOS 5 is about 1.7 Megabytes of installed space on my system. A few
programs like that really take a bite out of a 40-meg drive! BTW, I have a
3000NL w/2 Meg of RAM. Dos 5 works pretty well, but I still can't load my
TSR's into high memory unless
I use QRAM or one of the other aftermarket utilities. With your machine, DOS
5 will only cause you to lose DESKMATE and take up space. Sorry to sound so
negative... but you've already got the best your system can take advantage of.
Some days I wish I s

RE: Diskcopy from 720K to 1.44M...How? (Re: Msg 21959)
     From: GLENTZ To: DAIRYLADY

For DOS Diskcopy command you and Joan were working with. If the new diskette
has already been formatted differently than the original then diskcopy will
not work. Example 1.44Mb original disk and a new disk that has already been
formatted to 720Kb(Joan's case??). If the new disk is unformatted then
diskcopy will work because it will format the new disk to the same format as
the original.

As for Copy A:*.* B:*.* this will cause all the files on A to be copied to B
if there is enough room on B. If there is no physical B drive then many times
your one floppy drive has automatically been assigned both A and B so you can
use commands like copy. Copy will not automatically format floppies like
diskcopy though.

If you have one floppy drive of each size and need to do same size floppy
copies you can use the device=driver.sys in your config.sys file to create new
drives. As example if have A, B and C drives and A is 3.5in size and need to
copy some files from 3.5in floppy to another 3.5in floppy your config.sys would
contain the following: Device="PATH"\driver.sys /d:0/f:x where x is 2 for
720Kb and 7 is 1.44Mb. Use whatever number is for what your A drive actually
is. This will create a "new" drive and the letter will be D. You can now go
copy A:filename d: and you will be prompted to change disks when needed.
The 0 in d:0 is for the A drive. 1 would be for the B drive. You can also put
in the equivalent line for your B drive(x=0 for 360Kb, x=1 for 1.2Mb).

Also concerning formatting floppies to 720Kb in a 1.44 drive.
If using Dos 4 or better just use Format A:/f:720. Also many drives don't care
if you use true 1.44Mb disks or the 720Kb disks. Many of the 3.5in drives in
DOS machines can't sense which disk you use, this is why you have to use the
/f:720 switch. On the other hand many people have reported no data loss when
using 720Kb which were formatted to 1.44Mb. The MACINTOSH, however, will not
let you format 720Kb disks as 1.44Mb or vice versa. Their drives do know the
physical difference between the diskettes(the extra hole on the 1.44Mb).

Contrary to a previous message, floppies formatted to 720Kb in a 1.44Mb should
never cause problems when used in a 720Kb drive because the tracks are NOT
skinnier. A 1.44Mb has the same number of tracks as a 720Kb it just squeezes
more info into each track. A 5.25 1.2Mb drive however may cause problems when
writing to 5.25 360Kb floppies which have been previously used in a 5.25 360Kb
drive because the 1.2Mb drive does use skinnier tracks, even for 360Kb
floppies. This causes problems when the 1.2Mb drive overwrites data on a 360Kb
floppy and the old data was written by a 360Kb drive. The 1.2Mb drive can't
overwrite all the data(a small part on the edges of each track remain). Now
when you take the floppy back to a 360Kb drive the drive "sees" both the new
and old info and messes up. The only thing you can do is go back to the 1.2Mb
drive and copy the info onto a never used, other than formated, 360Kb floppy.

I know this was lengthy but I hope this clears up any questions you may have.

RE: Tandy 1000RL HD (Re: Msg 22090)
     From: DAIRYLADY To: ANDY126

Andy,

No, I bought it to replace the older 20-meg RLL hard disk card, which was
much slower. (All device bays and all other slots are filled in my computer,
and I didn't want to give anything up.) Now and then I have read things where
people said they were having problems with the master-slave connection of
two hard drives, and every once in a while I've read about people finding
solutions in specific situations. Usually it involved contacting the
manufacturer to find out if their drive would accept being in the slave
position and, if so, what jumper settings or which controller was required.
I believe these DCS drives are from Quantum, and the 8-bit controller is
from ADP; drives installed by Tandy are usually from Western Digital, I
think. (At least that's the kind Tandy sold me in January 1990.) You could
probably get some phone numbers from somebody on here for these companies.

The RL/HD came with DOS 3.3 didn't it? In that case, you can only have
partitions up to 32 meg. Personally, I don't find that to be a problem. But
I guess enough people disliked it so that newer DOSes provide for a single
large partition. If you dislike it enough to upgrade to DOS 5.0, be prepared
for other problems. (Check with MARK55 on this - he is by now the expert on
the subject.)

                                            Sue.

Glen,

Thank you very much for that detailed explanation. It is very helpful,
especially for helping Joan get started with her computer - but also for
when my cousin and I want to exchange data files, with her 1.44K disks and my
720K disks. Now we know just what will work and what won't. So I have
printed out three copies of your post, one for each of us. I'm pasting my
copy inside the cover of my DOS manual for permanent reference. Thank you
again for taking the time.

                                            Sue.

to renew disks that had bad sectors also, although not always.

Re: DrDos/5.0 and Deskmate....

Gee Sue, now that I've switched over here to the DR/Dos program, I'm
wondering if I have that ROM Deskmate back again that I lost with the
5.0????

Haven't really investigated that possibility yet....

Ring around the Rosey......

A,

Believe it or not, some companies other than Microsoft seem to have a
higher regard for people who use DeskMate. *They* are careful not to "step"
on the ROM.

Question: Is there a program that will convert Deskmate DRAW.FIG's to something
that can be shown with CSHOW. My Tandy version of DEskmate
won't run on my Samsung laptop and I would like to use the many graphics drawn
with DRAW. Or, better yet,is there a way to get Tandy
Deskmate to run on Samsung??

Ah...so you suggest that Microsoft stepped on Deskmate's Rom deliberately,
or they just chose to ignore it?

Re: Deskmate Graphics...

Well, there are some nice Video Screen Capture programs out there, Rich.
If they work with Deskmate Draw screens, which they may or may not,
they you can capture and show them on Cshow as PCX's or GIFS, although if it
does work it will probably also capture part of Deskmate's Top screen,
unless that can be removed from the picture before the capture...

Not sure I ever tried that, but may....

Then again, there might be a direct converter out there, somewhere...

Hi everyone,
I have a friend with a Tandy 1000sx - he is trying to sell it and the
Tandy specific" IDE
8-bit controller and a "non-Tandy specific" IDE drive to go along with the
card and expect them to work. Anyone know? Thanks!

Grafix Version 2.5 uses the 3 voice sound of the Tandy 1000, there is no PLAY
command that I know of for the 3 voice sound, but GRAFIX has NOISE and SOUND
generator's for all 3 voices.

Hi Vince..... yes, I agree with you about Deskmate... it's OK, and for
beginners it is pretty good at a good price. But I never got "hooked" on
Deskmate, I always seemed to have another program that did the same thing
better. But once you get comfortable
with a software package, (ANY package) it's distressing to have to give it up
and port all your data to something unfamiliar. So I understand why people who
use Deskmate a lot don't want to give it up just for a DOS upgrade, especially
if the DOS they us
e now isn't causing any problems. I think I'm going to skip DOS 6.... I hear
there's a 32-bit DOS 7.0 that will be released within a year. Ah! The rumor
mill is wonderful..... now if they were all TRUE.....
