Screen blankers for IBM compatibles would seem to be a dime a dozen.
There's a good one by John Harrell (DOSWIZZ) called PROTECT in the September '86
issue of PCM which should be available for downloading. It can also be
assembled to work on the 2000.
If it's the clock display you're after along with the screen blanker a la
KLOK2K, I've often thought about writing an IBM-compatibles version (I, too, use
an IBM-AT at work which has a crummy screen blanker program that doesn't even
pay attention to video activity, only the keyboard). But it's a project that's
always ended up on the back burner. Plus, with the proliferation of different
video cards and standards, it's a pain writing a program smart enough to figure
out what's out there to correctly blank it, not to mention where to write the
time on the screen without cursor flicker.
BTW, if you're using Version 4.1 of KLOK2K.COM, trash it and get Version
4.4 from the Tandy-specific database. 4.1 has obscure but nasty, crash-causing
bugs which are gone from 4.4.

Tandy crossed interrupts 2 and 5 on the original T1000 and T1000A. I understand

you need no modification to a standard controller ( like Western Digital,

No, I want the screen blanker feature. I have a menu program running which has
a blanker, but only if the menu is up. If you are off in some utility or other,
the blanker is not active.

I usually have it booted into dbase III since we have our lab inventory in

thanks for the notice on klok2k. I hadn't seen any problems but then maybe I am

     Disk Problems
     From: XQSME To: ALL

I hope someone can assist me, I am not very knowledgeable about the technical
aspects of Computer operations! I have a Tandy 1000 with a 20mb hard disk.
Occasionally, lately, while using my word processor, or any other software, my
input stops appearing on the screen, and I get a message, FATAL INTERNAL STACK
FAILURE and I can't do anything else. I then have to power down and re-start
the computer.

Also, once in a while the whirring in my cpu slows like it's having it's own
little "brown-out" and if I tap it it speeds up again, but it is usually too
late, I have to re-power again.

Any ideas, anyone? I would appreciate your help!

Thanks - Bob Corr.

Thank you for working with us to help fix the problem running QuickC on the
Tandy 1000TX. As you know, we discovered that the NMI handler on the 1000TX
does not function as does the NMI handler on IBM hardware, so entering
"Ctrl-Break" on the Tandy was the source of the problem.

If you hear of any other Tandy 1000TX users running QuickC 2.0, please have them
contact our Product Support Services group for a patch to fix the Ctrl-Break
problem.

Please note that the ONLY machine that we have confirmed problems on is the

In order to download files from any Topic in the databases, including the PCM

DOWN for down load or XM for Xmodem download or YM for Ymodem download.

Envision Designs is in the process of going out of business. There has not been
enough of our support to keep it going. As for other support you may wish to
contact the Tandy 2000 Orphans Club, c/o David R., 387 Main Street, Westport,
Conneticut 06880. The membership is $24. a year and the newsletter (the Whimper)
is published approximately once a month. There is a lot of information and
support through each other in the newletter and a considerable amount of TANDY
bashing if you can stomach it. I like the info, and choose to try and ignore
the bashing.

The Tandy store mentioned is not too reliable, I have ordered two different
pieces of equipment from them and they were unable to fulfill my order properly.
It seems they have some difficulty in following explicit instructions in
shipping to Toronto. Software is also available in some quantity from the Winton
Place Rochester store, (716)-427-7400. As well I was in Bradenton Fl. the end
of April visiting my folks and the store (Radio Shack) at the Desoto Square Mall
had a system with a mouse, Hard drive and I believe some software. I do not know
the phone number. I was at the CoCo Rainbowfest in Chicago in April and one of
the Tandy Execs. by the name of Gary Robinson explained that any piece of
software which Tandy held the rights to or sold for any of their machines
including the 2000 where they he held the rights could be bought directly from
their software support center in Fort Worth. I am not aware about the cost they
will charge; he did not say.

Hope this is helpful.

     The SCHEDULER
     From: JIMREED To: ALL

There is a very interesting and useful area of this SIG that few know about.
You reach it by first entering the conference area, but you do not necessarily
have to join a conference group to use it.

I am referring to the DIARY and APPOINTMENT features. To get to them, type
/DI once you are in the conference area.

Yes, you can keep your own diary (no, we cannot see it) or, best of all, you
can schedule appointments for yourself and you will be prompted on the day
they are scheduled in a manner similar to the notice you get about having mail
  when you first log on.

Using the /DI command inside a group you can "drop into" the
Diary/Appointments area just like you can "duck into" Mail with the /MA
  conference command.

To see all appointments you have coming up, use the LIST ALL command. For
regular Delphi users, this is a handy feature!

Sure sounds like a loose power connection in your computer. From what you
describe, I would guess that you have a wire broken internally (inside the
insulation) or poor solder connection. It could also be that your power
connection (to the motherboard from the power supply) is not properly seated at
the connector.

     286 express board problems
     From: JAYSTEIN To: ALL

I bought the 286 Express board from Tandy in the present close out sale for
$199.00. I'm having trouble though getting my computer to boot with the board
installed. I have an "original" Tandy 1000. The computer fails to boot and I
keep getting the following message on screen:
Vid Add: Base: BBE8h Off: 0000h
Data Fault: Written: 0000h Read: 0100h

Is this a hardware failure for certain, or could I maybe have something set up
wrong. I have a Tandy Memory PLUS Expansion Board (640K), and a hard disk
controller board install too. (I did have a Tandy plus 1200 baud modem
installed too, piggy-backed onto the Plus board, but contrary to Tandy's claim,
it extends to far over the next slot to have use of the adjacent slot.) I'm
using MS-DOS 3.2. I've check my set up four different times and everything
seemed fine. I tried the express board in the outside slot and in the middle
slot with no change. I tried booting first using PCT.EXE file (for use with DOS
3.0 or higher) and even tried booting with the EXPRESS.SYS file. I have the
following in my CONFIG.SYS (when using the Express.sys file) file:

      files=25
      buffers=10
      device=\dosmisc\express.sys CPU CACHE
      device=\dosmisc\ansi.sys
      device=\dosmisc\lpdrvr.sys

The third line is the one for the 286 express board. I changed the I/O address
to the alternate setting in case that was the problem by changing the switch and
changing the above line to:

     device=\dosmisc\express.sys CPU CACHE ALT

as the manual indicated.

I have the switches on the express board set as follow (though I did try both
settings for the I/O address):

     S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 S7 S8 S9 S10

OFF OFF OFF ON OFF OFF ON OFF OFF OFF

Before taking the board or the computer in I do want to make sure I haven't set
something up wrong. (By the way, is there any way to identify the daughter
boards to be certain that someone hadn't switch them out at the Radio Shack
store. The original 1000s require a special daughter board. The standard board
comes with the Express board and while I can tell a difference between the two
daughter boards, neither is identified, so if someone had swapped them out, I
wouldn't be able to tell.)

My local radio shack dealer is more than willing to make it right, whatever it
takes, but I just want to be certain that not I'm doing something obviously
wrong before I have to lug the computer in to the service center. It's a 50
mile trip and I have a 64 meg hard disk that I don't relish having to move or
having someone at a service center mess around with. (Calls to a computer
center store and to the service center weren't productive either, other than I
got the standard Radio Shack statements about only "qualified service
technicians should install parts such as the express board." I've heard those
statments no matter what I've tried to add! (I did heed the advice when it came
to the ROM upgrade though.) My dealer did suggest that I bring the board back
first and have it checked out before I lug the computer in, but all the same I
would like to eliminate the obvious first. (I've got the computer up and
running with the old 8088 chip back in place.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reggie,

Thank you for the suggestion, but that apparently wasn't the problem. The
computer still fails to boot and I get the same read out on the screen:

VID ADDR: BASE: BBE8h OFF: 0000h
DATA FAULT: WRITTEN: AAAAh READ: ABAAh

or if I switch the I/O address I get:

VID ADDR: BASE: BBE8h OFF: 0000h
DATA FAULT: WRITTEN: 0000h READ: 0001h

I put the 8088 back in and took the express board out and everything works fine.
So, maybe it is a chip or resistor gone bad. The PCT in the AUTOEXE.BAT does
seem to work fine. I tried to see if it made any difference if I booted with
PCT ALT 88 and PCT ALT OFF (with the board set to the alternate I/O address) in
the AUTOEXE.BAT, but no change. When I booted with the 8088 chip back in place,
I did at least get the message from the PCT program that I was "already in 8088
mode" (or something to that effect) and that "caching" didn't operate in the
8088 mode."

I'll wait a few days to see if any other suggestions come up, and if not then
I'll just take the board back and let my dealer have it checked out. The
technicians I'm sure will try and say I zapped it or something. Which of course
is always possible, but I don't think so, especially considering that I was able
to remove and install my old 8088 chip more than a dozen times while trying out
different options!

Again, though thank you for suggestion.

By the way, would you know what the empty chip socket located under the drive
cage is for??? When I was installing my hard drive last year, I noticed a empty
socket at least as long as the one for the 8088 chip, but this was under the
drive cage.

I seem to remember that if you have the original T1000, you need to upgrade the
BIOS in order to use the express board, Jay. The calls made to the old BIOS by
your express board will screw up the system memory map.

Reggie, I read your last message to me too quickly and misunderstood. I thought
you were telling me that the RAMTEST program would tell me if I had a 8087 chip!
Finally though I went back and reread what you had written. You were right! I
have a bad ram chip. That is a nifty little program and one for which I won't
mind sending off a check to register. They ask what seems to be a reasonable
fee too.

Of course I won't know for certain if that is the only problem I've got with the
express board but it does sound like could be what is wrong. Still, it could be
as Mike mention that I don't have the latest BIOS. I'll take it one step at a
time though. At least RAM prices are coming back down again.

By the way, Reggie, if that mysterious chip socket under my drive cage is for an
8087 chip, do suppose that the daughter board for the 286 express that I need
will be the standard one and not the special one for the original 1000? I ask
that as I was thinking that the only difference between the 1000 and the 1000A
was the addition of the 8087 chip socket. Of course on the 1000A it is located
next to the 8088. It's seems strange that it would be hidden up under the drive
cage. Perhaps though that is why they changed the Mother board and hence the
model number. In any case, I guess I can try the one if the other board doesn't
seem to work. Maybe that's part of the problem now???

I'll let you know how things go and a big thanks to you and Mike. I really
appreciate the help.

Nope, you have the correct BIOS update version, Jay. Let us travel down an "old"
T1000 path and see if it may be the problem ->

Tandy, in its' early days of PC compatibility used bus interrupt line 5, while
IBM PC's used line 2, for the same purpose. In other words lines 2 and 5 are
"switched" on the T1000.

It may be that your Accelerator card needs to "switch" line 2 to line 5 and line
5 to line 2. I am not sure that the card provides this switching, but the
documentation should tell you.

Tandy's R.S. catalog specifies that the PC Technologies 286 Express Accelerator
Card is for the Tandy 1200, IBM PC and PC/XT compatibles. If this is the card
you have (RS# 90-2065), then the older T1000 is not a 'true' compatible because
of the video and interrupt lines (2 and 5). The video should not make a
difference, but the interrupt lines may.

Mike, as to the actual part number I'm not sure if it is listed anywhere in the
literature, but the box states "Compatible Computers: Tandy 1000*, 1000A, and
1000SX Personal Computers" and the asterisk refers to the fact that a special
daughter board is required for the original 1000. (That cost me an extra 30
bucks.) In addition, the manual has instructions specifically only for the
1000SX, 1000A, and 1000.

Reggie mentioned to me that I may have a bad Ram and after using RAMTEST on
Reggie's advice I found he was correct. I'll probably be replacing the bad RAM
tomorrow and will see if that corrects the problem. The printout I got from
RAMTEST was:

Base memory read error at address 9C8CO
This address is in the 3rd 256k bank of base Ram...
     Bit number: 76543210
     Data is: 01010010
     Data should be: 10111010

As I've also been discussing with Reggie that when I was installing my hard disk
last year I discovered under the drive cage a large empty chip socket about the
size of the 8088 chip. Unless one removed both drives one would not see the
socket. Reggie said it sounded like it was the socket for an 8087 math chip.
Consequently, I've wondered if this mysterious socket could be involved in my
problem. As I mentioned the original 1000 requires a different daughter board
than the one which come with the kit. It was my understanding that the only
significant change between the original 1000 and the 1000A was the addition of
the 8087 socket If my logic is correct, it would seem that the difference in
the daughter boards would be related to the addition of the 8087 chip on both
the A and SX. (What's seems logical isn't always true of course!) If the RAM fix
doesn't work I may try swapping out the daughter boards. What do you think? I
can't see how it could hurt anything. (Famous last words!)

Thanks and any further help will be much appreciated of course. Hopefully the
RAM fix will work though and I'll let you and Reggie know one way or the other.
(Or I'll try to at least. I loose my plus Tandy 1200 modem with the express
card installed. Contrary to Tandy's claim, the modem attached to the plus
memory board DOES interfere with the next slot over and according to the
instructions with the memory board it must be in either the J10 (outside) or
middle slot. If I could use it in the inside right slot I'd have room. Looks
like I'll have to kick out bucks for a non-Tandy memory card with a serial port
and then an external modem or find an expansion chassis some place. Oh well...
If only Mr. Juge really understood! (or really cared about the original 1000
owners -re his latest editorials in PCM.)

The daughter board that comes with the 286 Card is for the SX no? Your
machine requires a separate card I believe. Did you get another card
besides the one that comes with the 286 Acc.?

I'll see if I can find my manual to look into it further.

Yes, I got the special daughter board for the original 1000. It cost me an
extra 30 bucks. The other other daughter board of course comes with the express
kit.

The standard board fits both the 1000A and the SX. For that reason I was wonder
that if the mysterious chip socket that I have is indeed for an 8087, than that
could be tied i nto my problems as wasn't the main difference between the 1000
and the 1000A the addition of the 8087 chip socket? I'm going to buy the RAM
tomorrow and give that a shot first.

The T1000 had "dual-BIOS" sockets, Jay. I believe that your BIOS upgrade reduced
this to only one BIOS chip - thus, your empty socket.

The memory parity error you are getting corresponds to the error that you
receive when you boot with the expansion board. It is probably only one chip in
the bank specified. If you take a look in the Utility Topic and do a SEARCH
MEMORY, you will find a short doc file that I uploaded. It will tell you exactly
where the bad chip is, so that you don't have to do a lot of mix n' matching.

I doubt that you will have to swap daughter boards after you rememdy the memory
problem. Let me know how it works out.
