Because of the apparent confusion existing with some
owners with reference to Apparat's ZAP policies, this file
is being created to set forth the methods (two only) of
making available to owners of NEWDOS80 any corrections, mod-
ifications, updates, and perhaps enhancements. At the end
is the latest list of ZAPS which have NOT been mailed en
masse to all users. This list will be updated as is neces-
sary.
Lets clear away some apparent misconceptions. Most own-
ers of NEWDOS80 are NOT on Micronet. In fact only a very
small percentage are. Therefor, placing ZAPS in a database
on Micronet would reach but a relatively few owners and ne-
cessitate duplication of effort when mailing. Not all Zaps
are of interest to all users. For example: Zap 053 concerns
users of DUAL-HEADED 80 track drives THAT HAVE BEEN
MODIFIED so as to be seen by the controller as one 160
track volume, SINGLE density. To accomplish this requires a
modification to the drive and a special cable supplied by
APPARAT.
ALL, repeat ALL Zaps are mailed to ALL owners
periodically. The cost is about $4000.00 per mass mailing.
To mail each Zap as it is produced to ALL owners would cost
about $20,000.00 for EACH Zap mailing. If that policy had
been followed for each individual ZAP, the cost would have
totalled $1,100,000.00. That would be fiscal lunacy.
If you have a problem with NEWDOS80, inform Apparat.
If Apparat hasn't heard from you, it presumes you don't
have a problem. If you want or need a Zap published but not
yet mailed, write, asking for it or them. Write "Zap
Request" on the outside of your letter so that it will be
routed directly to the proper person. List your serial num-
ber. The Zaps will go out in the next mail. If you wish to
avoid the bother of installing the Zaps (some are quite len-
gthy) yourself, send your original diskette bearing your
serial number and it will be updated by backup. It should
not bear any files other than those provided by Apparat as
they will be lost in the update. There is a charge of $5.00
for this service and this amount should accompany your disk-
ette. There is NO cost to you for Zaps mailed at your re-
quest except for the postage on your letter requesting
them.
Written or telephoned requests for Zaps between mass
mailings must provide your serial number. That is the
reason you were asked to mail in your registration card.
It's not a license and you were not asked to swear over
your signature that you would defend it with your life. It
just tells Apparat who you are and where you are. That ser-
ial number will be checked before providing Zaps or other
assistance. This will explain also one reason why Apparat
does not build a database of Zaps on Micronet. The primary
reason, however, is the one already stated. A Micronet data-
base of Zaps wont reach most of the users.
The following is a brief resume of Zaps not yet mass
mailed:
ZAP 049 - CORRECTS LONG DELAY ON FIRST ACCESS TO A
DRIVE AFTER A BOOT.
ZAP 050 - CORRECTS A PROBLEM IN 'CLOSE' OF A FILE
PROTECTED VIA 'ATTRIB' AGAINST 'WRITE'.
ZAP 051 - CAUSES 'FORMAT' TO PUT CORRECT EOF IN
DIR/SYS DIRECTORY ENTRY FOR DIRECTORIES LARGER THAN 2
GRANS.
ZAP 052 - ENABLE 'LOAD' FROM MINI-DOS FUNCTION.
ZAP 053 - ENABLES NEWDOS80 FOR DOUBLE SIDED (NOT
DOUBLE-DENSITY) 5" OR 8" DRIVES CONSIDERED AS A SINGLE
VOLUME/DRIVE. SPECIAL CABLE AND DRIVES REQUIRED.
ZAP 054 - ADJUST VISICAL TO PREVENT ITS DIRECTORY
SEARCH FROM HANGING.
ZAP 055 - ZAP TO ALLOW HEAD SETTLING TIME FOR 8"
DRIVES. REQUIRED FOR 8" DRIVE USERS.
ZAP 056 - CORRECTS BASIC 'MU' FILE PROCESSING WHEN
RECORD LAST ITEM IS A 25 BYTE $ AND STARTS AT 9AH WITHIN
THE DATA SECTOR.
ZAP 057 - ALLOWS "BASIC" COMMENTS TO APPEAR IN L/C
