** NOTICE: QUICKOP is a Quick Disk Optimizer that will optimize hard drives
using a less intensive method. This program will only optimize those files
which are fragmented while bypassing those which are already contiguous. The
program will place fragmented files near the directory tracks as usual but it
will not move those files which are already contiguous. **

WHAT IS QUICKOP ?

QUICKOP is a hard drive utility that will optimize your hard disk and prolong
its life for years to come. QUICKOP can optimize any LDOS, TRSDOS, or LS-DOS
formatted hard drive you have connected to your system.

QUICKOP REQUIREMENTS

Model 4/4D/4P equipped with 64K RAM and a hard disk unit (5 Meg to 99 Meg).
QUICKOP has been tested with various Hard Disk Systems under both TRSDOS and
LS-DOS operating systems. QUICKOP/CMD may only be used under TRSDOS or LSDOS
operating systems, but it will optimize the following disk formats:

                                 LDOS 5.1
                                 LDOS 5.3
                               TRSDOS 6.2
                                LSDOS 6.3

Hard drives FORMATTED under other operating system enviornments (other
than LDOS, TRSDOS, or LS-DOS) may cause unpredictable results.

WHY OPTIMIZE YOUR HARD DISK ?

Hard Disk Optimization is important! Optimizing your hard disk increases the
overall effeciency of the hard disk by allowing faster file access and fewer
read/write head movements. This means less wear and tear on the hard drive.

WHAT IS DISK OPTIMIZATION ?

Disk Optimization means simply to re-organize and re-structure the data on
the disk so that files and programs are contiguous. QUICKOP moves data from
the disk and organizes it into "packages" before writing it back out to the
media. Optimizing arranges scattered files on the disk into a contiguous
block. The final stage of optimization packs the files tightly together on
the disk closest to the cylinder where the directory is located.

The directory is an area on the disk where the operating system stores
information about the disk and the files contained on it. Thus, optimization
effectively re-structures data so that it is both contiguous and easily
accessable to the read/write head(s). Hard disk optimization has been used
for years on PC-MSDOS machines where large drives and partitions are common.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLES

Figure #1 is a hard disk partition BEFORE using QUICKOP. Notice how files and
programs are fragmented and spread over the platter surface.

Figure #2 is the same hard disk partition AFTER using QUICKOP. QUICKOP moves
only those files which are fragmented while leaving unfragmented files at in
their current disk position. QUICKOP reorganizes fragmented files closest to
the cylinder where the directory is located. File fragmentation is eliminated
by packing, or clustering the data.

In the example above, figure 2 shows files allocated over the disk surface
while those fragmented files were defragmented and moved to the center of
the disk platter. Using QUICKOP over time will eventually reorganize files
to the center disk platters.

HOW LONG DOES OPTIMIZATION TAKE?

It depends on the number of files that need to be optimized. QUICKOP will
optimize at the rate of 6,000 bytes per second.

HOW DO I USE QUICKOP ?

Using QUICKOP is a snap! From DOS ready, type QUICKOP and press enter thats
all there is to it! After loading QUICKOP, you will see the following menu:

QUICKOP - Quick Hard Disk Optimizer - v 01.00.00 - For TRSDOS 6.2 or LSDOS 6.3
Copyright 1988 by Michael Bailey. All Rights Reserved.
=============================================================================

CAUTION! Read program documentation before using DISKOP! Use on TRSDOS 6.2,
LSDOS 6.3, or LDOS 5.x formatted disks only.

Enter drive number
Or press BREAK to exit :_

You need only supply the drive number to optimize. After entering a number
QUIKOP will display some information about the current system configuration
(disk type, cylinders, size, etc.) and number of files on the target disk:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Computer Type: TRS-80 Model # Drive Size: #####.##K bytes
DOS version : DOS #.# Free Space: #####.##K bytes
Disk Hardware: ############## Used Space: #####.##K bytes
Cylinders : ### Format Type: TRSDOS 6.x
Directory : ###
DOS Formatted: DOS #.#
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Diskname: Diskdate: Logical Drive #
======================  ================================    ===============
Active Files: ###### Total Active bytes: ##,###,###

*** Press ENTER when ready to proceed or press BREAK to exit ***
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the last point at which you may stop the program and exit to DOS.
Pressing ENTER will cause the program to begin optimizing the drive or disk
partition selected.

                        CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION!

***************************************************************************
IMPORTANT NOTE: You should <NEVER> stop the optimization procedure for any
reason once QUICKOP has begun optimizing. NEVER turn off the computer, disk
drive, or reset the system while QUICKOP is working on the disk! Doing so
will cause certain data loss and, possibly, irreversible damage to files!
***************************************************************************

IMPORTANT STEPS BEFORE OPTIMIZING:

01. Check the drive/partition that will be optimized and find the largest
file on that disk. This can be accomplished by typing FREE :d. You
should remember this number as you will need it in the next step.

02. Type in FREE and press ENTER. Compare the number you wrote down with
the amount of free space available on that disk. You cannot optimize
the disk if the largest file on that disk exceeds the amount of free
space available. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPTIMIZE THE DISK IF THE FILE
EXCEEDS THE AVAILABLE FREE SPACE ON THAT DISK! (Example: Largest File
on drive 1 is : 100 K - You will need at least 100K of free space on
drive 1 in order to optimize it.)

03. BACK UP THE HARD DISK! Before using QUICKOP the first time you should
make a complete backup of all files on the drive you intend to use it
on. This will ensure that if anything goes wrong you will be able to
recover all files. This is only common sense!

NOTES ABOUT QUICKOP:

While QUICKOP version 01.00.00 is a extremely effecient utility, it does
have it's limitations. You may use the optimizer on any size hard drive
and with virtually every possibly configuration as long as the following
criteria is maintained:

                    1. There must be as much free space on the disk as
                        the largest file dictates.

                    2. QUIKOP will not optimize SYSTEM files or PROTected
files with a protection level of "NO" QUICKOP will
optimize files with protection levels 0 through 6.

                    3. QUICKOP considers all files with an extension /SYS
to be a system file, not just those which have the
                        system-bit flag set.

OPTIMIZING SYSTEM DISKS

QUICKOP was designed to be used on hard disks which are configured as DATA
DISKS. QUICKOP, however will optimize SYSTEM disks. This version of QUIKOP
will not optimize the /SYS files that are located on all system disks and
it is recommended that you manually organize the system files. The program
DISKSYS/CMD will perform this operation for you. Optimizing the SYSTEM
drive will increase its speed and effeciency dramatically, sometimes by as
much as 50%! DISKSYS/CMD will create a /JCL file that will do this for you
automatically. System disk optimization is probably more important than
than data disk optimization because the system disk is accessed much more
frequently.

VERSION 01.00.00 NOTES & ENHANCEMENTS

This version of QUICKOP will now optimize the system drive but will not
move the SYS files located on that drive. There are many methods by which
the SYStem files may be optimized, however I recommend using DISKSYS/CMD
to perform this operation. Note, you need only use DISKSYS once when you
set up logical drive :0. QUICKOP was designed for repetitive use, however
please keep in mind that you should only optimize those drives which are
noticeably fragmented. Complete backups are strongly recommended on those
drives which are near full capacity (within at least 3/4 full) before you
attempt to optimize. QUICKOP tends to fragment some files further when it
is used to optimize full disks.
