                     * * FastPlus BBS System * *

Welcome to the sometimes wonderful world of BBS systems. Have you ever wanted
to run your own BBS? Do you have 128K TRS-80 Model 4 sitting on your desk
doing anything? Do you have an auto-answer modem?

If you can answer "yes" to those questions, this ARC file will provide you
with the basics to get started at setting up and running your own BBS.

HISTORY

I originally wrote Fast80 BBS which was well received by the TRS 80 community.
After 2 years, and about 250 sysops (System Operators) suggestions for a new
version, I decided that Fast80 simply couldn't be "hacked" to be improved upon.
Hence in 1985 I started a new program based on many of the original concepts
of Fast80 but completely different in every respect.

In December 1985 the very first version of FastPlus was completed. Looking back
now, that seems like a long time ago. That first version was 1.0, and the
current version is 6.2. To mention all the changes and modifications to bring
you up to the current version would over-run most word processors. It is
sufficient to say that enhancing FastPlus has been undertaken very seriously.

Fast80 was originally sold by SOTA COMPUTING SYSTEMS LIMITED in Vancouver. They
advertised in 80 Micro until just recently when 80 Micro decided the Model 4
was no longer worth supporting. SOTA then found themselves without a
magazine to advertise TRS80 software in, and I found myself rewarded with all
my original contracts being returned to me. I now completely support these
programs and SOTA is completely out of the picture.

PRESENT

Which brings us up to the present. Even though SOTA was selling one of my
earlier versions of FastPlus, I continued to modify it and enhance it. When
it was decided that they could no longer advertise, I decided to package a
sort of starter kit for FastPlus and distribute it as :

        *********************** SHAREWARE *************************

Shareware implies that you get to have a look at a program and actually try it
before laying out any money. If you intend to keep the program and use it, you
are encouraged to support the shareware concept by sending $30.00 to the
author. Mel Patrick, 13699 70A Ave, Surrey B.C., Canada, V3W 2J8

VALUE

So what do you get for your $30.00? Well unlike some shareware authors, I send
out a disk with the newest version and/or any fixes which have been applied to
the program. Which means you get the most recent release. In addition to that
I don't believe in sending out a TEXT file on a DISK so that you can take the
rest of the afternoon to print out the manual yourself. I supply a complete
95 page manual which describes the complete operation of FastPlus and its
support programs. All that remains for you to do once you get the manual is
use a three hole punch and put it in a binder, or duotang.

SUPPORT

Perhaps the most important aspect of shareware is the support you receive in
the event you have trouble. As any registered FastTerm user who has taken the
time to write me or phone my BBS (yes I even use my own program), I do provide
support. Of course not all problems are easily fixed since there are a large
number of TRS-80's and even larger number of SYSGENd configurations.
However I try to help out any registered supporter. In the even you are not
a registered owner, but are trying to use the software, I do provide an
initial form of support, but obviously not as extensive as a registered owner
would have.

While you may think it funny that I made a point of remarking that I use my
own program, you should be aware that a number of authors simply write a
program to make a "quick buck" and really never intend to use the software
they have written. Which then means that if you find a problem, more than
likely you will have difficulty getting it fixed or will simply be ignored.
FastTerm was also written by me and I use it almost daily. I will probably
come across a problem long before one is actually reported. The same holds
true for FastPlus. My BBS runs almost 24 hours a day unless I am using the
Model 4 for programming or FastTerm work.

If you have a problem that doesn't require immediate action, write to me at
the address in this text file. I answer EVERY letter I get and try to support
as best I can. If you require immediate service, call my BBS at (604) 594-7398
300/1200, 8 bit word, 1 stop, NO PARITY. I almost always answer within 24 hours
of receiving a message. In addition, you can preformat your messages and use
FASTTERM to upload them to my BBS in the messages section.

THE SOFTWARE

Included in this ARC file is FastPlus and FPCONFIG. Both are /CMD files so you
can execute them from the TRS/LS DOS ready. They were meant to be used on
TRSDOS 6.2 or LSDOS 6.3. The BBS will NOT work if you are using DOSPLUS 4.0.

Leave the program names as they are. FPCONFIG is the configuration utility for
the BBS program (FastPlus) and will look through your drives for that filename.

The configuration program is EXTENSIVE! Don't try to rush through it and get
running as fast as possible. You will more than likely only frustrate yourself
and won't give FastPlus a fair chance. Many people will be able to understand
much of the terminology used but it will be mystic to others. I have been
running a BBS since 1979 and have written three of them. I should imagine that
I have heard just about every term or expression, but if you have a question
don't be afraid to ask. While it may seem silly to you, rest assured that I
have probably already heard it and can answer it so that you will understand.
Besides, if you want the most out of a program, it is in your best interests
to ask.

FPCONFIG

This is the configuration program used to set up FastPlus. It consists of many
many menu items and selections which allow you to customize your own BBS. I
suggest you work on a BACKUP COPY of the program and save your original in case
you have trouble.

Work through each menu page slowly, and if you don't understand something,
write it down so you will remember it later. FastPlus was written in machine
language and therefore is not as easily modified as other BBS programs.

The ASCII text you see when running the BBS is all encoded to cut down on the
space required for it. Sentences reference words in various places and it would
be impossible to change the menus or prompts in most cases. The small section
which can be changed should be straight forward.

FASTPLUS

This is the main BBS program. Completely self contained it does NOT require
COM/DVR or any supporting software. Make sure you don't have COM/DVR or some
other filter or driver which could interfer with FastPlus's operation.

TECHNICAL INFO

Another one of my beliefs is to tell the prospective supporter what the program
limits are. Even FastPlus has limits, although the biggest limiting factor is
actually the Model 4.

Baud Rates - 300,1200 are supported (2400 additionally for Hayes types)

Modems - Anchor, Lightspeed, Concord, Alpha, Signalman, Modem II, DCM 2212, 4P
and a user defined INIT string for almost any modem.

Hard Drive - FastPlus is completely compatible with any Radio Shack hard drive.
Other after market drives are supported as well, but you have to
give up some USER space (ie you will support a fewer number).

Large User Base - FastPlus supports a maximum of 420 users. If you have HIMEM
drivers or filters, this number will shrink accordingly.

Processing Speed - FastPlus is written in 100% machine language. It is doubtful
you will find a faster or more responsive BBS program.

Minimum Machine Wear - The message/user/command base is stored in the 128K RAM
of your Model 4 which means there is no need for
constant disk access. In addition you can set the
frequency at which the disk files are updated to keep
disk wear to an absolute minimum.

Variable Length Messages - FastPlus compacts each message stored in its RAM
block so that you always get the maximum number of
                           messages you can.

Down/Upload - FastPlus supports ASCII with either XON/XOFF handshaking or a
simple remote user start and stop without hand shaking. FastPlus
also supports XMODEM both checksum and CRC modes.

File Capacity - up to 300 file entires (individual). Entries can be made
available to more than one sub-board which cuts down on any
                filename duplication.

Sub-Boards - FastPlus supports 1 PUBLIC board and up to 15 additional
sub-boards. Worst case switching time between boards is approx.
eight seconds (floppy with slow stepping rate). Best case is
under four seconds with Hard Drive and XLR8er board.

Definable Sub-Boards - you can select the name, message sizes and file avail-
ability of each sub-board. You can also control user
access to any BBS function or sub-board. Control is
                       also available for remote sysops.

Message Features - word wrap (user/sysop selectable), auto-reply to messages,
                   auto-message deletion and more.

On Line - any users access can be changed while that user is on line. No longer
do they have to call back after you have given them access.

Terminal - from within FastPlus is PLUSTERM. A simple terminal which allows you
to call out and up/download programs without exiting the BBS. While
not as powerful as FastTerm, it is very useful if you have a HAYES
           modem.

Statistics - FastPlus keeps track of what a user does while online, the times
that they leave mail, messages and other information. As a sysop
this will enable you to see how your users are using the system.
A separate program for displaying and working with all this info
is provided to registered users ONLY! It is not available in this
             ARC file.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

While I would have liked to send out the manual with the program to make using
it easier, it simply wouldn't work. The 95 page manual is 294K long and I don't
know of a TRS-80 word processor which can handle a file like that. The document
is continuous and not chained. It was written on my MacPlus and has many screen
displays to aid in using FastPlus. We already know that the TRS-80 doesn't
really have good graphics to start with. Therefore, I have taken the table of
contents from the manual so that you can get a rough idea of what the manual
contains and see from the headings what FastPlus can do.

Now there you have the table of contents of the program manual. From that
you should be able to figure at least some of FastPlus's capabilities. I
realize that this won't answer all the questions, nor would I expect it to.

For to do that, you would need the manual and its detailed explanations.

I would also futher ad, that if you're under the impression that you don't have
to read the manual (or you simply refuse to read manuals), you may as well
forget ever even using this program. There is enough customization options
built in to keep you busy for some time. I took over 2 1/2 months to write
the manual and I still ended up revising it a number of times because of things
I missed initially. Consider that if I missed them and I wrote it, what are you
going to miss if you don't read it.

Hence if you decide to support the program, when you receive the manual do
yourself a favor and hide the disk from yourself until after you read the
manual. I may sound redundant on this simple fact, but the manual will solve
and answer most of your questions or problems.
============================================================================
Additional Files : In this ARC file there are two CMD files, but if you decide
to support FastPlus, you will receive another file for your own SYSOP use. It
is a user editing/status program. It will tell you how many messages, files,
carriers, were left or dropped by EACH user. It will allow you to SORT, DISPLAY
PRINT users and more.

While you can run without this program, it does make life a lot easier for
working with the USER file. Only registered users will be able to get it.

I also have some additional ideas on the work table which will be added and
made available to registered owners. You may call it incentive, I call it
support.
=============================================================================
IDEAS WELCOME...if you have ideas about addons to the BBS, feel free to write
or call and let me know. However I should warn you, the BBS at present is
almost 24K in size and there are less than 200 bytes of memory free to add
anything. If some changes you suggest are easily made without any major work, I
would probably be more than willing to add them. Remember others will benefit
from your ideas as well.

Although the BBS is 24K, I am looking at a method of cutting down the size
to make more room for other enhancements. In doing this I would increase disk
wear ever so slightly, you wouldn't probably notice. But you should be aware of
it. Of course this depends greatly on the support received.
==============================================================================
FAST80 owners...if you are presently a FAST80 registered owner, the shareware
fee of $30.00 is what it will cost you to upgrade to FastPlus. This amount is
less than 1/2 of what was charged by SOTA for the upgrade. Because of the
complete re-write of FastPlus, I feel that this is fair to all concerned.

FASTPLUS owners....if you're a registered FastPlus owner already, but have an
earlier version and would like the newest one (and a far better manual than
was originally shipped with FastPlus), I am going to have some good news for
you. If you send me your ORIGINAL FASTPLUS DISK and $15.00, I will send out
the newest version and printed manual to you. While I would like to ship it
for free, copying costs and shipping simply do not allow this.

FASTTERM SPECIAL...if you are going to order FastPlus, I also have a special
on FastTerm if you order it at the same time. FastTerm is already reported by
many registered users to simply be the best terminal program around. It has
more features than any other terminal program for the Model 4. FastTerm
normally costs $15.00. For which you get the newest version and a 44 page
printed manual. By ordering FastPlus, for only another $10.00 you can get
FastTerm. If you order it at a later date, it will cost the normal $15.00.
==============================================================================
If you like this program and would like to support its growth even further,
then I would encourage you to send me the shareware fee of $30.00 (check or
money order; either one). Fill out the order form at the end of this TEXT file
and mail it to me. I ship the software out within 48 hours of receiving the
order.

If you don't think you will ever use this program, I would ask you to upload it
to other bulletin boards, share it with user groups or with friends. I can not
afford "real" advertising, so word of mouth is very important to me. Pass it
along so that others can evaluate it for themselves.

Thanks for downloading this file!
