Besides the natural connection between word processing systems and data processing systems, you should also expect to see automated filing systems, microfilm and microfiche, expanded telecommunications networks and a tremendous increase in electronic mail. Data processing and word processing are almost overlapping today. Secretaries are no longer typists and transcribers, but they have several administrative functions that make their jobs more rewarding and more responsible. As DP and WP merge, the two will probably create a new catch-all title. Look for sonething like "office information systems" or "communication systems" to be the umbrella label for these computerized activities. Paper will be too cumbersome to work with, so the paperless systems will emerge. Micro systems--whether film or fiche--will increase our use of video. Compaction will also become a standard. Smaller typestyles, dual-sided copying and duplicating are the mechanical methods of compaction. Extracting key information or abstracting lengthy documents are the editorial methods of compaction.
