                              RAID
                     (C) 1985 -- Roger Smith

YOUR MISSION:

The galaxy has become filled with pesky bugs which
thrive on the abundance of cosmic dust. In spite of
recent budget cuts, the Intragalatic Pest Control
Council (IPCC) has approved a manned mission to
eradicate this menace. You have been chosen to fly the
Aresol on this assignment. You will travel into the
deepest reaches of space as you seek out and destroy
     these vermin.

PLAYING RAID:

After the title screen is displayed, you may press
<CLEAR> to play or <ENTER> to display a screen of
instructions. After pressing <CLEAR>, the view outside
your ship will be displayed. In the upper left corner
your current score is displayed. The high score is in
the lower left. The number of bugs left in the galaxy
is in the upper right corner. Your remaining energy is
displayed in the lower right corner.

The remaining energy continuously decreases. Firing a
shot of poison plasma will consume an additional 500
units of energy. Shooting a power pod will restore
your energy to 5000 units. When your remaining energy
reaches zero, the game ends. Press the space bar to
     fire a shot.

The arrow keys move your ship in the direction of the
arrow. For example, pressing the up arrow will move
your ship up causing everything on the screen to move
down. You can move faster (at WARP speed) by pressing
either <SHIFT> key while pressing the arrow keys.

Warning--do not run into a star while warping. If a star
(*) lines up in the center of your crosshairs while
     warping, the game ends.

Pressing the space bar will fire a burst of poison plasma.
Your remaining energy is decreased by 500 units. If you
hit a bug, your score is increased by the amount of energy
remaining. If you shoot one of the saucer-shaped power
pods, your energy is reset to 5000 units.

Warning--the IPCC's ace bug zapper, the late Baron Von
Databus, discovered (quite by accident) that shooting a
star will cause it to super-nova. Shooting a star will
     end the game.

The game ends when you run out of energy, shoot a star,
run into a star while warping, or shoot the last bug.

NOTES ON PLAYING RAID:

The galaxy is larger than the displayed screen. You may
have to search for the bugs or power pods. The bugs and
power pods are constantly moving. There are only three
power pods, so wait until your energy is low before
shooting one (but don't wait too long). You get more
"miles per gallon" when warping. Always watch your
remaining energy; if it gets low you need to find a power
pod. Holding down a <SHIFT> key without pressing any arrow
keys will waste energy. If left unattended, the game
enters its "demo" mode and plays by itself; press any key
to return to the title screen.

RAID should work on the Model I and on tape-based systems
(use TRSDOS 1.3's TAPE command to transfer RAID to tape), but
RAID has not been tested on either. The game was originally
written on a 4K Level I Model I, but has been modified since.
