This article describes how to patch the MISOSYS hard disk
driver package RSHARD for the Model 3 to run on the Model 1
under LDOS. The RSHARD package is available from MISOSYS
for $29.95 + s/h. They also have lots of other goodies for
die hard Model 1 users or people, like me, who just get a
nostalgia charge out of running a 15 year old machine. Things
like Double Density Floppy controllers, floppy cases and power
supplies, and LDOS 5.3.1 for the 1.

But why a hard disk on a Model 1, you ask? Well, why not!
Yes, the original 1's were barely usable with just floppies,
and not very reliable. However, the last versions of the
Model 1 keyboard and expansion interface have all the problems
solved, and are functionally identical to a Model 3.

So around 18 months ago I put out a message on the TRS-MOD134
Fido Echo looking for a "Model 1 Hard Disk Adapter Kit". This
is a special cable to connect a 1 to a Radio Shack 5 or 15 meg
external hard drive, and driver software. I ended up getting
an entire "late model" 1 system from Jim Howard in Orlando,
along with the hard drive adapter kit.

Unfortunately, the driver software would only address a 5 meg
drive. At the time, I had no 5 meg drive, and after a few
weeks of using only 5 meg of a 20 meg drive in a 5 meg box,
I decided to patch the Model 3 MISOSYS driver package.

Using the LDOS 5.1.3 manual as my guide, I changed all the
Model 3 specific addresses to the corresponding Model 1
addresses. If it's not too late to make a long story short,
IT WORKS!

So now I am running LDOS 5.3.1 on a 15 meg Radio Shack drive,
divided into 7 partitions of about 2.1 meg each, with a single
DSDD floppy as the boot drive.

By this point you may be thinking "Interesting, but who cares?"
After all, there's only a handful of Model 4 users left, let
alone 1 users who have a need for large hard drives. True,
but this info has already helped one other person, and if it
helps a few others, all the better.

I have a closet full of 1's, 3's, and 4's, parts, Hard Drives,
and software that after all this time, I *still* like to play
with. Even though I have a 386 with VGA color, 8 meg of ram,
250 meg of disk space, Windows, OS/2, Desqview, etc.

Now if only I can pick up a Model 16/6000 at a good price.....
