                               TRSCAT/CMD
                 A Shareware Disk Catalog Application
                     Copyright 1988 by Mel Patrick

TRSCAT is a machine language disk catalog application program for the TRS-80
Model 4/4D/4P computers. Minimum requirements are two disk drives and 64K of
RAM. More advantage can be had if you have 128K in the form of more filename
storage but it will work on a standard 64K system.

TRSCAT can be used with DOSPLUS 4.0, TRSDOS 6.2.x, or LSDOS 6.3. Both floppy
and hard drives are supported.

The program is largely a database type structure that works with disk
filenames. On a 128K Model 4, you can have over 2500 individual filenames and
over 1600 on a 64K system. If you have any high memory drivers, filters or
other requirements, these amounts will drop accordingly.

Using this program is simple. I suggest you get into the idea of CODING your
diskettes with small self-adhesive labels. On these labels you name the disk
in any way you like with a four digit code. i.e. the first disk in your
library could be 1000, then 1001 etc. Or G100, D100 and W100 for Games disk
#100, Data disk #100 and word processing disk #100. Use something that
indicates or symbolizes something to you. From that point, you use the BUILD
command to simply "feed" the program disks (and hopefully label them).

TRSCAT will keep track of the name and file size of each directory entry you
catalog. It will also keep track of the free space remaining on each diskette.
TRSCAT only uses VISIBLE filenames so you don't have to worry about any DOS
SYS files or the usual /CMD files on your SYSTEM diskettes.

Once you have created a "database" of disk filenames, you have some powerful
options at your finger tips. Entering a filename and using the SEARCH option
will quickly tell you where that particular file is stored (and that may be
more than one place).

Sorting is another powerful option from TRSCAT. You can sort by either the
DISK NAME or all of the separate FILENAMES. Typical sort times are about
1 second per 100 filenames (worst case).

Printing is very versatile since you can send printer codes to your printer
for special effects at the start and end of each line (like CONDENSED ON to
print a line, then CONDENSED OFF at the end). You can also specify how many
columns you want on the printout. Hence if you have a wide carriage printer
you can take advantage of the extra width. If you use the CONDENSED CONTROL
CODES you can use the columns to get more on a page. TRSCAT normally stores
these options in a file used for configuration so you don't have to set them
each time you use the program.

Editing is possible so that any time you can add, delete, or modify entries
from the keyboard or use the built in AUTO UPDATE to simply remove the old
disk entries and replace it with the new ones. You can manually enter a disk
which TRSCAT is unable to read using the manual entry option.

Since the program is not too difficult to use, a manual (which is fairly
large) was not included with this ARC file. However, should you decide to
keep TRSCAT and make use of it, you are encouraged to support the shareware
concept and send $15.00 to the author. In return for your support you will
receive a printed manual and disk of other shareware software.
