                          SoBUG-80
South Bay Users Group - 80

Nov, 84

The South Bay Users Group is currently being formed in the
Los Angeles area to provide the local TRS-80 owners with a
place to acquire, share, and learn information about their
machine.

SoBUG-80 is currently being organized by Bob Ackerman, and
Ray Hendrickson. These people have been compiling ideas and
suggestions from a lot of users. They have several distinct
goals for the group.

First, SoBUG-80 is being modeled after the very successful
group called TCUG in Alexandria, Va. (Bob Ackerman has been
a very active member and is still writing articles for
their magazine). TCUG was formed in the late 70s by TRS-80
users who wanted to learn more about their Model I. Several
good pieces of software have been written by members of
group. Some of the software written by club members include
LDOS 5.x, LDOS/TRSDOS 6.x (by Roy Roltoff, a past club
president), SuperSCRIPT (non superscripsit) enhancements
for Model I SCRIPSIT, EDAS (editor Assembler), etc...

I would like to mention that SoBUG-80 is not being formed
as a SOFTWARE TRADING PLACE. The Club will not support
software piracy in any form. The club will encourage all
forms of FREEWARE and PUBLIC DOMAIN.

The club meeting format is being set as a semi-formal meet-
ing environment. Machines are not recommended unless the
the machine is being used for demostrations. Planned events
include talks of software design, software conversions,
different languages, and software reviews. The meeting will
also field questions of all computer natures from the mem-
bers. Panel and group discussions on any computer topic is
is encouraged.

We, the coordinators, hope the SoBUG will get off on a good
foot. We have seen what respectable groups can do for the
computing community. We hope to make SoBUG that kind of
group.

The organization of the club is not fixed at this time.
People who are currently interested, like the following
suggestion and we are planning to follow this suggestion.
The Coordinators, Bob and Ray, will perform all administra-
tive and control functions for the group for a perion of 6
months from the first meeting unless the majority attending
members feels a longer time is needed. At the end of the
period, formal club elections will be made and the new
leadership will direct the group. We hope that our ideas
will be passed to the elected leadership of SoBUG-80 and
our dreams become a reality.

The initial organization of the SoBUG-80 has been completed
and the initial paperwork for Non-Profit Status has been
started. Once the Proposed By-Laws have been finished, a
formal meeting of the Board of Directors will be held to
finalize many details. Once that is completed, a formal
meeting will be organized. This first meeting will be very
formal and is designed to cover several very important
tasks. After this first meeting, SoBUG-80 can get started
in doing good for the South Bay Computer Community.
