[[[ New version Enhancements outlined at the bottom of this file.]]]

PC Dial is a stand-alone Modem COMM/dialing utility with some interesting
features not available with any other dialing program in the Model 4
public domain market. PCDIAL is the ONLY Telenet PC Pursuit dialing system
available in the public domain.

Unlike most other terminal communications software which include a phone
directory, usually limited in both its function and capacity, this program
is a specialized communications tool oriented not concerned with the Term-
inal features than the dialing system.

PC Dial Requirements:

PC Dial runs on a Model 4/4P/4D Microcomputer equipped with a minimum of
64K RAM and 1 floppy disk. PC Dial also requires a Hayes compatable MODEM
(300/1200 and optionally, 2400 BAUD).

IMPORTANT NOTICE! This program WILL NOT work properly if COM/DVR is set!!
PCDIAL is compatable with various terminal packages available on the open
market, such as Fastterm and XT4 which have set the standards for Model 4
telecommunications software.

Files included with this ARC:

                              PCDIAL/CMD - The main program
                              PCDIAL/TXT - Youre reading it
PURSUIT/TXT - Info about PC Pursuit

Files created during runtime:
                               PCDIAL/CNF - Configuration File
                              PCDIAL/DAT - Directory database

The program is basically self-explanatory from the very beginning. You're
guided through the program via a series of menus the moment you load and
run PCDIAL/CMD.

To start the program, just type PCDIAL [ENTER] from TR/LSDOS Ready prompt
and follow the instructions, answering all questions as they are asked. I
have tried to make it as easy as possible to use the first time.

PC Dial's most outstanding feature is it's compatability with PC Pursuit,
a data network available in almost every major city in the United States.
PC Dial can call any Pursuitable number you have entered in the directory
automatically. It will log onto PC Pursuit, connect with a long distance
exchange, dial the number of the board you wish to connect with, and log
you on, all automatically. PC Dial may also be used to dial local or long
distance numbers directly, over ordinary telephone lines. PC Dial can
even be used to make voice telephone calls.

The dialing directory is limited only by the amount of disk space that is
available to you. The directory can hold approximately 1,673 entries on
one 174K floppy diskette. PCDIAL will properly display up to 9,999 phone
numbers providing you are using PCDIAL with a hard drive unit.

EXPLANATION OF COMMAND KEYS

Commands available From the DIRECTORY window:

<D>ial Direct Call a local or long distance number directly over
                     ordinary voice telephone lines.

<P>ursuit Dial Dials the number currently highlighted using PC
Pursuit (if you are a subscriber).

<V>oice Call Calls the number and hangs up once the number has
been dialed (the modem goes onhook) so that you may
converse with the other end voice.

<A>dd an Entry Adds a telephone number into the first available
                     directory slot.

<C>hange Entry Allows you to change the currently highlighted entry
and replace existing telephone data with new data.

<K>ill Entry Deletes the currently highlighted entry in the phone
directory. It does not ask for confirmation. Note
that KILLing and entry does not zero it out, but merely
                     resets a flag.

<M>ulti-Dial Permits you to dial up to 15 numbers repeatedly until
a connection is established. May be used with Telenet
                     and/or direct-dial.

Comands available from the DIALING window:

<A>bort Dialing Aborts the task at hand and returns to the DIRECTORY
                     window.

<R>estart Entry Causes the computer to hang up the phone and
                     immediately redial the last number.

<D>ialing Delay Sets the number of seconds that the modem waits to
receive a carrier. This is not a software switch,
but rather sets the Modem's S7 register.

<H>ang up Modem Same as <A>bort Dialing

<Q>uit to LSDOS Puts the Modem onhook and exits back to DOS ready.

Commands available from the TERMINAL window:

[F1] Your Terminal Exits PCDIAL and runs the terminal software that you
                     specified when configuring PCDIAL.

[F2] Disconnect Puts the modem onhook.

[F3] PCDIAL Exits the Terminal and returns to the DIRECTORY
                     window.

[SHIFT] + [CLEAR] Clears the screen.

[BREAK] Exits the program to DOS.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    [[[ NEW VERSION ENHANCEMENTS ]]]

Version 1.8 corrects a lack-loose timing problem encountered when dialing
some PC Pursuitable cities. Seems that the program sometimes entered the
commands a little bit faster than PC Pursuit was capable of handling so I
have now added a 250-ms delay between commands sent to PC Pursuit.

I have also added a 2-minute screen saver from the directory window.
After two minutes of inactivity the screen will blank and a message
will scroll across. Pressing any key will restore the screen.

Pressing [F1] will now cause PCDIAL to exit itself and run any terminal
software you have previously defined when configuring PCDIAL.

PCDIAL no longer uses PCDIAL/CFG as the configuration file. A new file
is created, called PCDIAL/CNF which contains your confidential PC Pursuit
account code/password information. You may kill the PCDIAL/CFG file if
you like. The new version does not make use of it. The PCDIAL will still
still use the PCDIAL/DAT file created with earlier versions of PCDIAL.

Version 3.0 enhancements now includes a Multi-Dialer that when activated,
will dial up to fifteen numbers, in sequence, until a connection is made.
Many more features have been implemented, and are visible when entering
PCDIAL from DOS ready. PCDIAL 3.0b actually improves your chances of a
Network/Node connection by about 35% ! Improved error-message handling
and quick response time make this dialing system the fastest available on
the market for use with the Telenet public data network.

MULTI-DIAL: This feature allows you to dial up to 15 BBS numbers repeta-
tively until the first connection is made. You may multi-dial both direct
dial and/or through PC Pursuit. To use multi-dial, simply use the cursor
to highlight the numbers you wish to dial, pressing M, and you will see a
asterisk (*) besides the Name/Description. Repeat the procedure for each
bulletin board you wish to dial. When you are finished, press the [ENTER]
key to active the dialer. PC Dial will automatically dial either through
PC Pursuit or dial direct accordingly, each number in turn, repeatedly,
until a connection is made with a bulletin board.
