WORKPLACE SANS (UNICODE FONT)
| Version 0.5 (built 2008-07-17)

| *** PLEASE NOTE ***
| With version 0.5, I have embarked on a fairly extensive re-tooling of
| Workplace Sans. This was brought about by upgrading to TypeTool 3.0, which
| features an improved auto-hint-generation system. This in turn has allowed
| me to smooth out many of the character designs from the worst of the bizarre
| contortions I was previously resorting to in order to produce the rasterized
| appearance I wanted.

| As a result, I decided to recreate the font file from scratch, and add each
| glyph as I redesigned it. Version 0.5 represents the first milestone in this
| effort.

| What this means is that version 0.5 of Workplace Sans does NOT support all of
| the characters that were included in the previous versions. At present, only
| the characters from codepages 850 (IBM Latin-1) and 819 (ISO Latin-1) are
| supported.

INTRODUCTION

Workplace Sans is a light condensed sans-serif TrueType font with Unicode
  encoding.

This font has been carefully designed to resemble, as much as possible, the
OS/2 bitmap font "WarpSans". This resemblance is at its best when displayed
  on-screen at 9 point/120 dpi under OS/2, or 11 point/96 dpi size under
  Windows.

Due to its rudimentary hinting, it does not display very well at other sizes,
  unless anti-aliasing is used.

INSTALLATION

To install this font under OS/2, use the Font Palette (choose 'Edit', then
'Add', and type in the name of the temporary directory where the font files
  are located).

To install under Windows, use the menu options of the Font applet under the
Control Panel to install the font.

To upgrade from a previous release under either Windows or OS/2, close all
applications, then copy WPSU.TTF over the existing copy (usually located in
\PSFONTS under OS/2, or \WINNT\FONTS under Win2K/XP). If you get an error
that the file cannot be written, you may have to reboot first. In either
case, you will have to reboot after updating the file.

Users of other operating systems should undertake whatever steps are
  appropriate for their platform.

USING FREETYPE/2

  FreeType/2 (FREETYPE.DLL) is a high-quality replacement for the OS/2 TrueType
font driver, which noticeably improves the rendering of this and other
TrueType fonts under OS/2. I generally recommend installing it; it can be
obtained from various sources, including Hobbes (search for "FT2V").

There are several versions of the FreeType/2 driver floating around, and some
caveats are in order. If you use a FREETYPE.DLL from Michal Necasek that is
dated 1999 or earlier, there is no issue. However, later builds from either
Michal or KO Myung-Hun will not make use of Workplace Sans's Unicode encoding
table (as they use a heuristic that requires a very large number of glyphs in
the font). This generally results in the following:
   * Workplace Sans may not show non-ASCII text correctly under PM codepage
     1207.
   * "Half-width" (single-byte) Japanese Katakana characters may be rendered
     using "full-width" glyphs instead.
   * Double-byte CJK characters may not show up at all.

You can avoid this problem with KO's more recent releases (v1.21 and up) by
turning on the "force Unicode" option (using the script that he provides).

REMARKS

Workplace Sans is not particularly well hinted, and probably never will be,
(I have neither the tools nor the know-how to implement full manual hinting).
| This means that characters will probably look splotchy or irregular at other
| point sizes, unless you use antialiasing (e.g. using the Innotek Font Engine).

| I am not a professional font designer, nor even an experienced graphic artist.
| By such standards, Workplace Sans is not very well-designed. My goal has been
| to end up with outline glyphs that rasterize as closely as possible to the
| bitmaps of 9-point WarpSans (at 120 dpi), while maintaining a certain level of
| internal consistency. Since I have no ability to hint the characters directly,
| I had to achieve this goal by pushing the glyph outlines themselves into what
| are at times rather strange contortions. The result is that, if you view
| Workplace Sans at any large point size, you will find that it looks rather
| strange in places. You have been warned...

Workplace Sans is created using FontLab TypeTool.

LEGAL NOTES

Workplace Sans is (C) 2008 Alex Taylor.

This font is considered public domain software, and may be used for any
  purpose, commercial or otherwise.

NOTE: This typeface was inspired by the OS/2 bitmap font "WarpSans", which is
(presumably) the property of IBM Corporation. Consistent with various
legal precedents, the author's view is that, given that Workplace Sans
is an outline font and WarpSans a raster font, their designs are so
fundamentally different that the former cannot be considered a
        derivative of the latter.
