MICROSOFT WORD VERSION 5.0 DCA CONVERSION LIMITATIONS This file explains certain limitations on conversions between documents formatted in Microsoft Word and those formatted in DCA-RFT format. It also explains how to create custom font mapping files for use with the conversion utility. In addition, this file explains how to create a file to convert document margins if you have changed Word's default margins by selecting the "use as default" option in Format Division Margins. General Information For best results, before running the conversion utility, make sure your CONFIG.SYS file includes the line: files=20 Always repaginate your document before you convert it. A. Conversion from Word to DCA-RFT For best results, repaginate the converted DCA-RFT document again before you view or print the file. If you have attached a style sheet to your Word document, the utility will convert the correct formatting to the DCA document. The style sheet must be in the same directory as the Word document file or in the same directory as WORD_DCA.EXE. The following features of Microsoft Word 5.0 are limitations of the conversion utility or the DCA-RFT format. Character Formats: . Italic becomes normal text in DCA-RFT. . Double Underline becomes single underline. It becomes regular text on the 5520. . Small Caps becomes text in regular caps. . Hidden Text becomes normal text. . Pitch: DCA-RFT permits only pitch changes of 5.0, 8.55, 10.0, 12.0, 15.0, 17.1 and proportional spacing. All Word pitches are rounded to the nearest available DCA-RFT pitch. . Font Color is not supported. . Conversion from specific Word fonts to DCA fonts can be customized with the font mapping file MSDCA.FNT. See more information later in this file. Paragraph Formats: . Right-aligned text becomes left-aligned. . Left and right indents become margin changes. . Hanging Indents are constructed in DCA-RFT. Tabs and Indent Tabs are used to maintain the appearance. . Keep Together and Keep Follow formats are not supported. . Side-by-Side paragraphs become sequential paragraphs on the same page. The original indent settings for each paragraph are preserved. . Only .5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 line spacing convert to DCA. . Absolutely positioned objects do not translate. They become regular inline text. Division Formats: . The space between columns (in Format Division Layout) must be greater than .25 inch. . In newspaper-style columns, changes to line spacing are not supported. . Pitch changes are not supported in newspaper-style columns. The first pitch found in the Word file becomes the pitch for the columns in the DCA file. . To translate exact column breaks, insert a hard column break at the end of each column (press Ctrl+Alt+Enter). Otherwise, the text translates as one column per page. . Page numbering outside of running heads is not supported. . Gutter Margins or Mirror Margins are not supported. Other Features: . Normal and non-breaking hyphens become required hyphens. Optional hyphens become syllable hyphens. . Glossary text (e.g., (dateprint), (timeprint), or (page)) is not converted. . Leading characters for tab stops are not converted. . When explicitly numbered footnotes are converted, a system footnote is attached. The converted footnote has two numbers. . Merge documents are not supported. All special marks are replaced. . Indexes and tables of contents are not supported. All special marks become normal text. . Glossary files are not converted. . Outlining is not supported. . When converting to 5520 DCA, underlining, double underlining, and strikethrough text becomes plain text. . Graphics do not convert. The tag converts as text. . Gutter margins do not convert. . Bookmarks do not convert. . Autosave files (.SVD) will not convert. The file must be a fully saved Word file. . If you select the "use as default" option to change your internal default margins, you should use the default file WORD_DCA.DEF when converting. WORD_DCA.DEF must be in the same directory as WORD_DCA.EXE. The format of WORD_DCA.DEF is listed at the end of this file. B. Conversion from DCA-RFT to WORD For best results, repaginate the DCA-RFT document before conversion. The following features of DisplayWrite 3 are not supported either by the conversion utility or Microsoft Word Version 5.0. . Document comments become regular text. . Typestyle is partially supported. It is customizable with the MSDCA.FNT and DCAMS.FNT font mapping files. . Lines per inch commands are not supported. . Half justification becomes full justification. . Begin and End Keep commands are not supported. . Page numbering outside of header text is not supported. . Merge Documents are not supported. All special marks become normal text. . Symbols not resident in the IBM Graphics Character Set will be translated to @. . When converting from 5520 DCA, required backspaces will be deleted. . When converting from 5520 DCA, bold is not converted. . When converting from 5520 DCA, any bold created with the half up key converts as plain text for the original text; the text entered after the half up key code converts as superscript. . Footnotes become page image. They are not converted to Word footnotes. . Overstrike converts to strikethrough. . Columns in tables must be separated by at least two spaces to convert correctly. C. Font Mapping Files You can create your own font-mapping tables to override some or all of the built-in font conversions provided by the conversion utility. All of the mapping files are ASCII files, which you can create in Word. You save the files by choosing Transfer Save and selecting the "Text-only-with- line-breaks" option. The tables are two ASCII files: MSDCA.FNT, to map Word fonts to DCA fonts, and DCAMS.FNT, to map DCA fonts to Word fonts. File Format MSDCA.FNT Each line of the MSDCA.FNT file must be in the following format: Font number, font size, comments:DCA GFID,,comments "Font number" is the number assigned to the font in the Word PRD file you are using (for information about Word's font numbering system, see pages 251-253 in "Printer Information for Microsoft Word"). "Font size" is the size in points. "Comments" can be any text without punctuation. "DCA GFID" is the DCA GFID font number. DCAMS.FNT You use this file to map DCA fonts to Word fonts. Each line in DCAMS.FNT must follow this format: GFID,,comments:Font number, font size, comments "GFID" is the DCA GFID font number. "Comments" are any text without punctuation. "Font number" is the number assigned to the font in the Word PRD file you are using (for information about Word's font numbering system, see pages 251-253 in "Printer Information for Microsoft Word"). "Font size" is the font size in points. D. Default File If you have selected the "use as default" option in the Format Division Margins command, you should create the ASCII file WORD_DCA.DEF to convert the margins you set, instead of Word's preset margins. This file is needed to tell WORD_DCA what your new margins are if you do not have a division mark at the end of your document. Make sure WORD_DCA.DEF is in the same directory as WORD_DCA.EXE. The general file format for WORD_DCA.DEF is: fieldname:value: comments All the fieldnames in the following sample file must be included, in the order they appear. The value is the value you want the conversion to use. Comments can be any text, but they must be terminated with a carriage return. Sample WORD_DCA.DEF file: Page length:11: This is the page length in inches Page width:8.5: This is the page width in inches Start:-1:Starting page number (-1) for standard Top margin:1: This is top margin in inches Bottom margin:1: This is bottom margin in inches Left margin:1.25: This is left margin in inches Right margin:1.25: This is right margin in inches RHTop:0.5: This is running head position from top RHBottom:0.5: This is running head position from bottom Columns:1: This is the number of columns Column gap:0.5: Intercolumn gap CodePage:437: This is the codepage to be used going to DCA DecimalChar:".": Decimal alignment character enclosed in ""
