Born in Paris of English parentage, Sisley studied in Gleyre's studio at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he met Monet, Renoir and Bazille.
Devoted to the Corot tradition, Sisley was exclusively a landscape painter, and was wretchedly poor. Monet and Renoir attended his funeral.
