			    Express Meter 3.0
			    -----------------

This document describes installation procedures and documentation updates
for Express Meter, including the Express Meter Audit Kit.

Running the Express Meter INSTALL program
-----------------------------------------
Some notes before you begin the INSTALL program:

     * The Express Meter Editor requires 1.5 MB of disk space on the
destination drive. Additionally, approximately 3 MB of temporary
	storage is required during installation.

     * The metering files require 60 KB of disk space on the
	destination drive.

     * The INSTALL program is incompatible with the DOS FASTOPEN.EXE
utility. If you have this program loaded, you must rename it
and restart your computer. After you've completed the
installation, you can restore it to its original name and reboot.

     * If you're using an international language version of an Express
Systems or hDC product, please note that installing Express Meter
will overwrite HDCLIB.DLL, causing some error messages to appear
in English instead of the language of the international version.
Your international product will not be otherwise affected.

Installing Express Meter is a two step process. First, it must be
installed on one or more network servers or shared volumes that will be
accessible to all workstations that will be using Express Meter. Then it
must be installed on each workstation. The workstation installation can
be done automatically from a network login script, or it can be installed
manually on each workstation that will be using Express Meter.

The instructions below give you a quick overview of the installation
process. For more information, consult the manual.

SERVER INSTALLATION

To install Express Meter on the server(s), follow these simple steps:

     1. If Windows is not already running, type "win" at the DOS
prompt, and press ENTER. (Note: You must have Microsoft
Windows already set up on your computer before installing
        Express Meter.)

     2. Insert your Express Meter diskette into drive A: or B:.

     3. Choose the File menu in either Program Manager or the File Manager.

     4. Select the Run... command to display the Run dialog box.

     5. Type "a:install" or "b:install" and press ENTER.

     6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Note that during the server installation process you will be asked to
enter the names of three directories or to accept the defaults:

     1. A directory to use for Express Meter Editor. The Editor
is the tool you will use to assign license counts and to view
reports, so you will typically want this tool to be installed
on a local hard disk, so that it is inaccessible to users.
Alternatively, you might wish to install it to a directory on
a server that only network administrators can access.

     2. A directory to use for the sample library. Again, this is
something you will typically want to be accessible only to you,
so you will probably want to install it on a local hard disk.
The default directory is a SAMPLE subdirectory of the directory
you used for Express Meter Editor.

     3. A directory to use for the initial application library and the
workstation installation program. This directory needs to be
accessible (with read, write, create and execute privileges,
and with delete privileges for the system administrator) to
every user who will use the library.

If you have purchased more than one library, you will be asked to supply
the above directory information for each library you have purchased.

AUTOMATIC WORKSTATION INSTALLATION

To install Express Meter on workstations automatically:

     1.	To tell EMINST which client software (DOS or Windows) to install
on which workstations, edit the [Workstation Install] section of
the APPLIB.INI file. The lines in this section are of the syntax:

	Default | username = [w] [d] [a]

Where "w" means install the Windows client software, "d" means
install the DOS client software, and "a" means add a line to the
user's AUTOEXEC.BAT file which loads the DOS client software as a
TSR. You may override these settings for specific users as in the
	following example:

	[Workstation Install]
default=wda ; install Windows, DOS, and load TSR in AUTOEXEC.BAT
Roger=w ; install just the Windows version
Christine=wd ; install Windows, DOS versions, don't load TSR
Russ=da ; install just the DOS client and load TSR

Also, you can specify whether to interactively prompt users during
the workstation installation or to run the installation quietly in
the background with the setting UserInst=quiet or UserInst=verbose
	in the [Express Meter] section.

Note that a Windows installation will install either 3.x or NT
client software, as appropriate. The "d" and "a" switches are
	ignored on Windows NT workstations.

     2. Put a line in the login script that runs EMINST, which was
installed in the network directory you specified for the
	workstation installation programs.

     3. EMINST will automatically install Express Meter on each
workstation and will also update the workstation files when
necessary. Users will be notified that an installation
is taking place. This message can be disabled; consult
	the manual for more information.

     4. EMINST will add a line to EMINST.LOG (a text file in the
application library directory) indicating the user name, date,
and time installation took place. If any errors occurred, they
will be noted in this file.

MANUAL WORKSTATION INSTALLATION

To manually install Express Meter on a workstation:

     1. You must be at the workstation to which the installation is to be
	performed.

     2. From the DOS prompt, change to the network drive where your
application library directory is located. From the workstation
	installation directory, run EMINST.EXE.

     3. EMINST will add a line to EMINST.LOG (a text file in the
application library directory) indicating the user name, date,
and time installation took place. If any errors occurred, they
will be noted in this file.

Note: In general, you should run EMINST as specified above to set up
workstations to meter both DOS and Windows applications. However, in some
cases (such as Windows for Workgroups) you may not be able to access
network drives from DOS. In these cases, you may run EMINSTW instead.
Note that EMINSTW will only set up workstations to meter Windows applications.

To manually install Express Meter on a Windows workstation using EMINSTW:

     1. You must be at the workstation to which the installation is to be
	performed.

     2. If Windows is not already running, type "win" at the DOS prompt,
	and press ENTER.

     3. Locate and run the EMINSTW.EXE program that was installed on the
	server during the server installation.

     4. EMINSTW will add a line to EMINST.LOG (a text file in the
application library directory) indicating the user name, date,
and time installation took place. If any errors occurred, they
will be noted in this file.

New features in Express Meter 3.0
---------------------------------
The following is a summary of new features in Express Meter 3.0. See your
manual for more information on these features.

OPTIMIZATION

* Advanced suite metering. Express Meter now supports, and optimally
manages, license pools containing a combination of individual licenses
(i.e., Excel) and suite licenses (i.e., Office), including cases where
applications belong to more than one suite (for example, all of the
applications in Office belong to Office Professional).

* Suite recommendations. Express Meter now recommends an optimal mixture
of individual and suite licenses to meet an organization's needs.

* Improved license reclamation. Express Meter 3.0 goes beyond crash
detection to recover licenses which are loaded but unused at a
workstation - a common problem with Windows workstations. Express
Meter uses a multi-stage process to recover these licenses. First, a
user can be reminded to close down an application after it has been
open for a period of time. At the system administrator's option, the
warning may occur only after the application has been idle for a
period of time and/or there are other users waiting for it, and can be
repeated at specified intervals. Finally, if the user does not
respond to the warnings (usually meaning they are not at their
workstation), the application will be closed down and the license
reclaimed for others to use.	Special care is taken to ensure the
application is closed "safely" - if user intervention is required,
such as to decide whether or not to save a changed document, the
application will be left open until the user returns to the workstation.

* Waiting list. An improved waiting list algorithm decreases the average
waiting time over a simple queue, particularly in cases involving suite
  licenses.

* Idle limit and reporting. Express Meter will track idle time, allow
you to set an allowable idle limit, and display a warning message if
the allowable idle time is exceeded. This feature will help identify
chronic idle time so that corrective action can be taken.

SECURITY

* Authorized user list. The use of each application can be limited
to a specified set of users or groups.

* Automatic application add. If an application is run which is not
listed in the library, it is automatically added and its usage is
tracked and recorded. When the library is next opened by the system
administrator, the new applications are identified and the system
administrator can easily set license counts and adjust metering options.
This ensures that all application usage is detected and recorded.

* OLE metering. Express Meter meters both OLE 1.0 and 2.0 launches.

* Audit trail.	Express Meter provides an audit trail of the library
showing every change made to application or library metering options.

* Multiple version metering. Express Meter will meter, report and manage
the licenses of multiple versions of the same application, e.g. Word 2
and Word 6, allowing you to continue enforcing license compliance
  through transition periods.

* Increased security in the DOS client. Express Meter requires a
password for unloading the DOS client TSR.

PERFORMANCE

* Improved performance. Express Meter has reduced the network traffic
  associated with metering.

* Enhanced crash detection. Express Meter will remove a
crashed client and their associated applications from the user lists
in real time, freeing up resources. In addition, crash detection will
be performed in the Express Meter Editor.

REPORTING

* Suite peak usage. Express Meter collects suite peak usage data
which will be graphically displayed in the Express Meter Editor.

* Customizable data reset. Express Meter is able to reset metering
data prior to any date you choose.

* More reports. Express Meter has 17 pre-configured reports which
include library, application, user and Savings Meter reports.

WIDE AREA NETWORK SUPPORT

* Export to Management Information Format (MIF). This is the standard for
Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS). We are the exclusive
license management vendor and a Microsoft Strategic Partner for these
programs. This will allow for WAN data consolidation and compilation.

* Export to standard database formats including Comma Separated Value
(CSV), tab delimited and space delimited formats. This allows for
greater customization and consolidation of data.

* Multiple Document Interface (MDI) in Express Meter Editor. Included
in this are drag and drop capabilities, copy and paste functions, and
Most Recently Used (MRU) libraries. This allows for easier data
  consolidation of multiple libraries.

EASE OF USE

* Enhanced interface in Express Meter Editor. This includes resizeable
windows, status bar, customizable library comment, and local country
formats for date, time and currency.	Express Meter has also added
features to display the number of waiting users in the main window, to
remove a user from an application user list, to view metering data by
application or by user (with nested reports in graphs), and export
  reports to Windows Write format.

* Enhanced interface in the Windows client. When a license is not
available, the Windows client displays the current user lists
along with the application's average waiting time. It also includes a
VIP usage key (ALT+V) to launch an unlicensed copy with a
  correct password.

* Easier server installation. This includes a 3.0 feature billboard, more
user friendly interface, automatic client setup for the shared network
Windows environment, automatic user and group setup for the Netware
networks, and option to run Express Meter Editor and Audit Kit Manager
upon completion of the installation.	Express Meter has a
shorter case-insensitive password, and a separate uninstall program.

* More efficient workstation installation. All workstation installation
is now done by one program (instead of one for DOS and one for Windows),
and Windows installation no longer requires a restart. In addition,
Express Meter now allows you to easily update local HDC.INI settings.

* Site license metering. Express Meter now meters site licenses.

* 64-byte user names. Express Meter has been equipped to handle 64-byte
user names, an important feature for Banyan users.

* More metering data by user. Express Meter will collect a user's total
number of unlicensed, crashed, failed and waited launches, total idle
usage and waited hours, and last launch date on a per application
basis. Express Meter will also collect a user's total number of
Express Meter sessions and usage hours.

Thanks for your support of Express Systems products!

Documentation Updates
---------------------

METERING DOS APPLICATIONS

* Do not use the "lock out" option in conjunction with a DOS shell
program; these programs typically cannot gracefully recover from
a blocked execution resulting from no available licenses.

* Loading the DOS Client before you run Windows will enable you to meter
any DOS applications which are run in DOS boxes in Windows, including
those which are launched from within the DOS box, i.e., from the command
prompt. However, in rare cases involving applications launched from the
command prompt, a DOS box may appear to freeze just after a new
application is launched. This can occur when a second DOS box had been
switched away from shortly after launching an application, without
Background Execution enabled. To solve it, switch back to the second
DOS box and allow it to complete its launch.	A more permanent solution
may be to allow Background Execution in the PIF file of your command
  prompt DOS box.

METERING WINDOWS APPLICATIONS

* When you are put on the waiting list for an application, Express Meter
automatically saves any document filenames or other command line
parameters you specified, so that when a license becomes available, the
originally-specified document is opened. Some recent applications,
however, use the Windows registry to specify DDE execute strings
that File Manager uses to open and print documents, instead of using
the traditional command line. In these cases, Express Meter will open
the application when the license becomes available, but the document will
  not be automatically opened.

* Express Meter supports Windows 3.0 workstations but requires that the
files COMMDLG.DLL and SHELL.DLL be present. Contact Microsoft or
Express Systems if you do not have these files.

METERING APPLICATIONS ON WINDOWS NT WORKSTATIONS

* Idle time is not tracked on NT workstations.	It will appear as zero in
  all reports.

* You may encounter long delays when the 16-bit version of Microsoft Word
fails to launch due to no available licenses. To solve this, run
Word in its own memory space.

* You may encounter occasional problems running Express Meter Editor after
running some 16-bit applications unlicensed.	The error will indicate
that MICROMAN.EXE could not be found. To solve this, run either the
16-bit application or Express Meter Editor in its own memory space.
