Editing the Windows System Files:
The easiest way to edit system files from Windows is to use the System Editor.
This program is named SYSEDIT.EXE and is located in the SYSTEM\ subdirectory
of the Windows directory. The easiest way to install this program is to locate
it using file manager, then simply drag it to the PhotoWorks Program Group. A
new icon named sysedit will appear. Double-clicking this icon will take you
into the system editor.
***** Use Caution when altering Windows System Files! *****
These file determine how Windows operates, and improper changes here may cause
Windows to fail to load or run. The suggestions below are believed to be correct,
and have been tested on as wide a range of systems as practicable, but are not
intended to be, or represented to be, exhaustively researched. The user accepts
full responsibility for any effects or side effects resulting from the use of the
information below:

PhotoWorks and Memory Requirements:

Physical Memory Requirements:
Under Windows 3.1, PhotoWorks requires at least 4MB of installed RAM,
and 8MB or more will give best performance.
Because of the way Windows manages memory for PhotoWorks, you must have at
least 450K of free conventional memory in DOS (as reported by MEM) before
Windows is started in order to properly load and run PhotoWorks.

Windows for Workgroups requires more memory than Windows 3.1 in order to
support its greater functionality. For this reason, while PhotoWorks will
run under Windows for Workgroups 3.11 or later with 4MB of RAM, 6MB or more
is preferable, and 8-12MB will give best performance.

PhotoWorks Plus works with most Beta builds of Windows '95 (aka Chicago),
but not with all, due to changing features and support requirements
as Windows '95 evolves. PhotoWorks Plus will be made fully compatible with
the commercial release of Windows '95 when it becomes available. Use of
PhotoWorks Plus with any beta or pre-release version of Windows '95 (or
Chicago) cannot be guaranteed, and is at the risk of the user. Memory
requirements for Windows '95 have not yet been assessed, but it is likely that
8-12MB of RAM should be adequate to run PhotoWorks, with 16MB being preferred.

PhotoWorks under Windows NT 3.1 or later requires an absolute minimum of
12MB, with 16MB or more being preferable, depending on the number and
type of drivers which are loaded and how many other concurrent tasks are
loaded and running. Operation under earlier versions of NT and/or beta
releases cannot be guaranteed.

Virtual Memory:
Note: You MUST have at least 4MB of RAM installed in your system to
run PhotoWorks under Windows 3.1. The following procedures may help if you do
not have enough virtual memory; it will do nothing about physical memory.

1. Exit Windows

2. Type CD C:\WINDOWS to change to your Windows
    directory

3. Type EDIT SYSTEM.INI

4. Find the file section called [386enh] and look for a
line in that section that reads: PageOverCommit=
If you find this line, increase the number at the end
of the line by one and skip to step 6

5. If you dont find this line, add this statement
at the end of your [386Enh] section: PageOverCommit=5
Make sure to type it exactly as shown here

6. Save the new changes and then exit the SYSTEM.INI file

7. Type WIN to restart Windows

8. Open the Control Panel in your Main Program Group

9. Click on the 386 Enhanced icon

10. Click on Virtual Memory and then click on Change>>

11. Check to see that the Recommended Size and New Size
settings are identical. If theyre not, change the New Size
setting to match the Recommended Size

12. Click on OK and then click on Yes to confirm your changes

13. Restart Windows

If this procedure fails to free up enough memory for PhotoWorks Plus,
return to step 5 and increase the number "5" in your PageOverCommit=5
line to "6" and then repeat steps 6--13. If thats insufficient, continue
incrementing the command by one (1) until PhotoWorks has sufficient memory.

If these procedures leave you unable to increase your virtual memory to
more than 8MB, repeat steps 8--10 and change the swapfile type setting
from permanent to temporary; or consult your MS DOS manual on how to
run Defrag to consolidate free space on your hard disk.

Color Resolution (Number of Colors):
Photoworks Plus will work on any adapter which is supported by Windows, but,
for best color reproduction, a Super VGA card capable of 640x480x256 colors
should be used. If you received a "Low Color Resolution" warning during
installation, consult your Windows manual and the documentation which came
with your computer (or video card) about how to increase the number of colors
your card can display. Generally, an SVGA card with 512K or more of video
memory is required to use this mode.

Win32s and AfterDark Screen Savers:
If your system includes an AfterDark Screen Saver, you must check your
SYSTEM.INIfile and examine the [boot] section. If there is a line
that reads: device=ADWRAP.DRV, it must follow the line that reads:
drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll
This prevents conflicts between AfterDark and Win32s.

Virtual Math Coprocessor Device and *vmcpd:
Some installation programs remove the device=*vmcpd line from the [386Enh] section.
This line must be included. If you receive a warning regarding the lack of the Virtual
Math Coprocessor Device, or vmcpd, chaeck to make sure this line is in the [386Enh]
section of SYSTEM.INI:
device=*vmcpd

Win32s and Laser Master:
Laser Master installs a special file named Winspool.drv; so does Win32s. In order to
properly use Win32s and the LaserMaster driver, it is necessary to TEMPORARILY
disable the LaserMaster driver while installing Win32s. It may be enabled after
installation is complete. Following this procedure will allow LaserMaster and
Win32s to coexist happily. Please consult your LaserMaster documentation for further
information on disabling and enabling LaserMaster.

MS-DOS versions and Win32s:
Win32s makes extensive use of DPMI memory management. Versions of MS-DOS 6.0 and
later may give better performance with Win32s than earlier versions. If you received
a warning about an early version of MS-DOS, you may want to upgrade to the latest
version of MS-DOS (6.22 at this writing), but this is not mandatory. If you received
this message while installing under NT, ignore it, as the DOS version number is not
relevant under Windows NT.

Win32s and Networks:
Win32s will attempt to modify Windows. If you are running Windows from a network, this
may fail if you do not have "modify authority" to the directory where Windows is
installed. This is a safety feature of the network to prevent modifying the common
copy of Windows used by everyone. If this occurs, please contact your network
administrator. He (or she) will need to install PhotoWorks (and Win32s) directly at the
server. The installation diskettes may be copied to directories named:
\PODWINST\DISK1 (disk 1)
\PODWINST\DISK2 (disk 2)
and the installation run on each remote workstation where PhotoWorks is to be used.
Please note: PhotoWorks Plus may be run on a network, but each concurrent user MUST
have a separate license in order to comply with SFW's copyright and licensing
requirements.

Filenames:
PhotoWorks will only properly handle standard DOS filenames. The requirements for DOS
filenames are:
1) Eight characters (A-Z, 0-9, _).
2) A DOT (.).
3) A three-character (A-Z, 0-9, _) extension.
Depending on circumstances, PhotoWorks may not properly recognize an invalid filename.
Long filenames should not be used under Windows NT with PhotoWorks.
