I. INSTALLATION

a. Installing PC911

To install the product, change to the drive that contains the installation
diskette and run INSTALL:
    1. Insert the disk in drive A or B.
    2. Change to the appropriate drive -- C:\> A:
    3. Run INSTALL A:\> INSTALL

The installation process will add a line to run PC911 whenever the PC boots
up. This line will usually be added at the end, unless you start Windows
from AUTOEXEC.BAT. In that case, it will be added before Windows starts.

b. If you have an earlier version of PC911:

You need not uninstall the old version before installing PC911 version 2.
When you install the new version, it will:
1. Move the old version to a new directory on the same drive, called PC911V1.
2. Install itself into the PC911 directory on that drive.
3. Store its snapshots in a sub-directory in PC911 called PC911.001.
At any time in the future, if you find that you need to restore a snapshot
taken by PC911 version 1, just run the PC911 in the PC911V1 directory and
restore as usual.
NOTE: the snapshot format for version 2 is different from that of version 1,
which is why you have to do the above.

II. WHAT'S NEW

Several substantive changes have been made to the product:

1. Emergency Diskette
a. PC911 now automatically boots up with the Emergency Diskette created
during installation. It tests the Diskette to ensure that it is usable in
an emergency.

b. PC911 now automatically backs up data required by OnTracks DiskManager
so that OnTrack is loaded even when booting up with Emergency Disk as well.

2. PC911 Snapshots
a. Version 2.0 introduces the concept of a snapshot -- i.e., a copy of
all configuration files that together define your PCs setup. You can
specify which files should be included in each snapshot and can restore
any snapshot at will.

b. PC911 allows you to manage these snapshots much better. It can
automatically purge old snapshots beyond a limit you specify so that no
disk space is wasted. You can also delete unwanted snapshots at any time.

c. You can preserve important snapshots, ensuring that these will not be
deleted.

d. You can add any number of files to be part of a snapshot, so that your
PCs setup is restored completely by restoring a snapshot.

Other Changes
1. The user interface, messages and buttons are clearer and simpler. The
product is organized better and the main features are easier to access.
For example, the list of free IRQs is displayed from the cards screen itself.

2. Some incompatibilities with display drivers have been corrected (which
may have caused the previous version to hang on some PCs).

3. For consistency, the Batch file that starts PC911 is now named PC911.BAT
rather than 911.BAT.

Known Limitations/Bugs

1. PC911 does not support SuperStor disk compression software. It can still be
installed and will run properly on the hard disk, but the Emergency Disk may
not restore some system parameters. In no case, however, will PC911 restore
incorrect data that will cause the PC to crash.

2. While PC911 can detect many types of cards, you should be aware that PC911
cannot detect every type of card. The best way to keep track of installed
cards is to enter data regarding these into PC911's database whenever you
install new cards.

3. It is possible that the PC may lock up during card detection. Should this
ever happen, you should just reboot the PC and repeat the card detection
process. PC911 knows which routine caused the problem and will suggest that
this be bypassed in the future.

4. In some cases, PC911 may temporarily change the settings on a card (e.g.,
a Sound card) so that it reports problems when Windows is started. You might
see a message of the form: "Incorrect MIDIPORT setting," or a COM port may
become disabled. If this happens, you should power off the PC, wait a few
seconds, and then power it back on again. This will reset the card and will
correct such problems.

5. This version of PC911 only supports the ON-TRACK Disk Manager and does not
support any other disk managers (e.g. E-Z Drive from MicroHouse). We are in
the process of upgrading PC911 so that it will support other Disk Managers.
If your disk manager is not supported, you many not be able to create or use
the PC911 emergency diskette.

6. If PC911 is unable to create an emergency disk during the installation
process and displays a message that the program sys.com could not be found
then try the following: a) exit the installation and get to the dos prompt.
b) format an empty diskette by inserting a blank diskette in your floppy
drive and then typing the command
  FORMAT /S A:
note: if you put the blank diskette in your b: drive then change the A: to
B:. c) try installing PC911 again and when asked to insert a blank diskette
for the emergency disk, insert the diskette that you just formatted.

V. NOTES REGARDING THIS RELEASE

This section describes special notes on using PC911 and features we are
working on to include in future releases of PC911.

1. We are continually expanding the list of cards that PC911 can detect. If
you are using a popular card that you would like PC911 to support, just drop
us a note or call us about it. We will try and include support for it in the
next release of PC911.
