Installing the Windows Internet Tour Guide Companion Disks
==========================================================
Before installing the software that is found in the
back of The Windows Internet Tour Guide, it's a good
idea to make backup copies of your system files. The
software installation process modifies the
AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, SYSTEM.INI, PROTOCOL.INI
and WIN.INI files. See the manuals that came with
your computer for information about backing up these
files.
To install the software from the Companion Disks,
follow these steps:

   1. Place the disk labeled Companion Disk 1 in the drive.

   2. Select File, Run in either the Program
  	Manager or the File Manager.

   3. In the Command Line text box type A:\INSTALL
(assuming you placed the disk in drive A; replace
the "A" with "B" if you place the disk in drive
  	B).

   4.	Click the OK button.

   5. Follow the prompts on the screen, removing
and replacing disks as instructed. Note: in many
cases, the installation program will need to
restart Windows to properly configure the
  	software.

   6. After the software is installed, reboot your computer
and restart Windows. Go to the Internet Tour Guide
program group in the Program Manager and double-click
the Getting Started program item. This item starts
	Ventana Configure.

Signing Up With IBM Global Network
==================================
Before you can connect to the Internet, you need to
set up an account with an Internet service provider
and you need to configure the Internet software that
you have just installed to work properly with the
service provider.
You can use The Windows Internet Tour Guide
software with nearly any Internet service provider,
but included with this kit is a special sign-up offer
from IBM Global Network (see accompanying special offer
description). To take advantage of this offer and to
establish an account with IBM Global Network,

   1. Click the IGN button in the Getting Started
window. The IBM Global Network Sign Up window
  	appears.

   2. In the Sign Up window, type your name,
address, phone number, and fax number (if any).
Select the type of credit card you will use to
pay for the account and enter its account number
   	and expiration date.

   3.	Type three user IDs, (to 5 to 7 letters in
length, with no spaces or punctuation) into the
   	1st Preference, 2nd Preference, and 3rd
Preference text boxes. IBM will use your 1st
Preference if no other IBM Global Network
subscriber has already used that user ID.
Otherwise, IBM will use your second or third
preference, as necessary. If all three of your
preferences have been used by another IBM Global
Network subscriber, IBM will derive a unique user
ID from your first preference. The user ID that
IBM finally chooses will become a portion of your
   	electronic mail (e-mail) address.

   4. Click the Modem button.

   5. Select a Baud Rate (the speed of your
modem), the comm port to which your modem is
connected, as well as a modem default (the type
of modem you have--when in doubt, choose Hayes).

   6. Make sure you modem turned on and connected
to your computer and the phone line. Click the
Sign Up button. During this procedure, you are
presented with a screen that describes the
service to which you are subscribing as well as
terms and conditions of your subscription. Read this
information carefully before deciding whether to complete
the sign up process. If you decide to sign up with
IBM Global Network, click the Agree button.
The program dials the IBM Internet Connection
service, using your modem, and proceeds to establish
an account with the IBM Global Network. In case you
ever have a problem connecting to the Internet, the
Technical Support phone number for IBM Internet
	Connection Service is 800/727-2222.

   7. When your account has been established, the
program disconnects your modem from the IBM
Internet Connection service and displays an
information window which displays your account
name (assigned by IBM), your new user ID, a
password assigned by IBM, and the IBM Global
Network access phone number that is nearest to
   	your address.

The Getting Started program writes this
information to the configuration files that your
Internet programs will use, but you should still
record this information in a safe place. You will
need to know your user ID any time you give
someone your new e-mail address. Just add
@ibm.net to your user ID. For example, if your
user ID is johns, your e-mail address is
   	johns@ibm.net.

You also might want to write down the
following pieces of information for future
reference: hostname, domain name, mail server,
   	and news server.

   8. Click the Finished button to close the
   	program.

Signing Up With Another Service Provider
=======================================
If you decide to use a service provider other than
IBM Global Network,

   1. If the Getting Started window is not already
displayed on your screen, double-click the
Getting Started icon in the Internet Tour
   	Guide program group.

   2. Click the Other button in the Getting
Started window. The Ventana Configure window
   	appears.

   3. Refer to Chapter 2 of Windows Internet Tour
Guide for more information about filling out this
   	window.

   4.	Click Finish to cause Ventana Configure to
save the configuration information that will be
used by The Windows Internet Tour Guide software.

Launching the Internet Applications
===================================

One of the programs installed on your hard disk is
the Ventana Launcher. This program is a convenient
launching pad for all the Internet software that
accompanies The Windows Internet Tour Guide. To run
your Internet software, follow these steps:

   1. Open the Internet Tour Guide program
  	group.

   2. Double-click the Ventana Launcher icon to
display the Ventana Launcher window. This window
contains buttons that launch the following
Internet applications: Mosaic, News (WinVN), as
well as the Chameleon Sampler programs, which
include Custom, FTP, Mail, and Telnet.

   3.	Click a button for the program you want to
start. After you exit the application, the screen
returns to the Ventana Launcher window.

   4. To quit, click File, Exit.

Occasionally you may need to configure one of the
Internet applications distributed with this book. To
display a configuration screen, select Configure from
the Options menu.
