Release Notes on Drag And File for Win 32 beta 2

This is the second beta release of Drag And File for Windows 95 and Windows NT. This
version will work under the current version of Windows 95. It you run it under NT, it will
only run with NT version 3.51. Earlier versions of Windows NT won't run it. We've made
every effort to make it compatible with NT and do not currently use any Win 95 specific
common controls but because of Microsoft's lack of planning, NT 3.5 won't run this version.

This version makes full use of the Windows 95 desktop. You can drag and drop files with the
right and left mouse buttons and the results will be similar to doing the same with Explorer.
You can right click on files, directories or drives and bring up context menus, to view, copy,
move, delete or create shortcuts.

Because of the nature of using shell services this way, sometimes you can have Win 95 do
things and sometimes you can have Drag And File do things. If you right click on a drive
icon, you can choose to format that particular drive. When formatting that way you will be
using Win 95's formatting program. You can also choose format from the Drag And File
menu and then you will use DF's formatting program which will allow you do do safe
formatting and is faster. The same is true for the find programs. Windows 95 find program
allows you to search only a particular drive or directory but it's search options are very
impressive if not difficult to figure out. Our find program will allow you to search selected
directories accross drives or selected drives and now allows text searches. The interface is
much easier but not as powerful. You can drag files or directories to the recycle bin for Win
95's safe deleting or you can press the delete key or delete button for "old fashioned" deleting.
Because of these differences we have decided to keep both versions available. Our's through
menus or buttons and theirs through right mouse button context menus. Your feedback on
this design descision will be appreciated.

The 16 bit version of Drag And File was destibuted with our zip manager Drag And Zip and
our file viewer Drag And View Gold. For the 32 bit versions, we have decided to distribute
these programs un bundled. A 32 bit version of Drag And Zip is now in beta and should
bebavailable from the same place where you have found this program. We should be
shipping the 32 bit version of Drag And Zip in early May. We are not so far ahead with our
viewing program Drag And View Gold. We don't expect to ship that until the time Windows
95 acutually ships. In the meantime this version of Drag And File will work with either the
16 or 32 bit version of Drag And Zip and the 16 bit version of Drag And View Gold. If Drag
And View Gold is not runnig and you try to view a file through the view button, then
Windows 95's built-in viewer will run instead. Unfortunately, the Win 95 viewer requires a
serarate window for each file and it does not have a plain ASCII or Hex viewer. If a viewer
for a particlular format is not available, it just gives an error message and exits. If you have
ten files tagged and click on view and none of the files have a viewer, then you will get 10
message boxes informing you of such. To shield you from what I think is not the best design
in the world, Drag And File will first check if a viewer is available before trying to run the
Win 95 viewer. If no viewer is available, then Drag And File will not try to view the file and
will present no error message. Your feedback on this design is appreciated. If you try to view
tagged files with the right mouse button, those commands are passed directly to the Windows
95 shell without our intervention so if there aren't viewers avalable for some files that you are
trying to view, you will get a message box for each file without a viewer.

We've tried to take what we thought was good about Explorer and not use what we thought
was questionable. When viewing all file details, you can set the size of each field by dragging
the lines separating the legend buttons. Like Explorer, clicking on the legend buttons will sort
the list in that order. The first click will sort in descending, The second click will sort
ascending. I have never been happy with the tagging options provided in Microsoft's file
managers. Particularly I find it very frustrating if I click on a list of tagged files and I don't do
anything, then all of the files except the one I'm clicking on become untagged. Also I find
that clicking on a single file untaging all of the otheres unless I hold down the shift or control
key to be very annoying. Therefore I have continued to use the tagging method that was used
in Drag And File for Win 16 and most DOS file managers. Because of this alternate method
of tagging, I have so far elected not to use the built-in treeviews or image lists of Windows 95
to present directory and file data. If I find I can combine them both then we will probably go
that rout in a future version. 16 bit versions of Drag And File allowed tagging and untagging
with the right mouse button but under Windows 95, this action will bring up a context menu.
Under Windows NT, this action will still tag and untag files.

Viewing files from multiple directories or an entire drive brings up the the DF secondary
window. Up to now I've been unable to get any information from Microsoft about doing OLE 2
drag and drop from more than one directory at a time. Therefore, this window does drag and drop
the old way. Because it does not use OLE 2 we can make it drag and drop to the shell or
pop up conext menus. We hope to have this fixed before ship date.

Thank you.
