		SyQuest Windows SCSI ReadMe File
		  Version 3.11 (August, 1994)

A. Introduction

The SyQuest Windows Utility installs SyQuest Software
under Microsoft Windows and provides the following
   ICON based functions:

   1. Unlock SyQuest Drives
   2. Format SyQuest cartridge
   3. SyQuest Back-up Copy to/from a drive
   4. SyQuest Options

The "ReadMe" and "About SyQuest Utility Software"
   may be displayed within Windows.

B. Setup

The SETUP.EXE windows program installs the SyQuest
Utility and six "ICONs". The setup program complies to
Microsoft Windows setup installation guidelines. User
friendly instructions are presented at each stage of
   the installation process.

The utility installs the SyQuest SCSI device driver to
support SyQuest SCSI cartridge drives (SQ555, SQ5110C,
SQ5200C, SQ3105S, SQ3270S) connected to either an SCSI
   or parallel port interface.

   NOTES:

   1. User Must Run SyQuest DOS Installation prior to Windows
Setup. Otherwise an Error warning message is displayed.

"You MUST Run SyQuest DOS SCSI Installation
	  Prior to Windows SCSI Setup!
Click 'OK' to Exit Windows SCSI Setup."

   2. It may be necessary for you to move these device drivers
from the beginning of the system files. For example, if
you want to load the driver (SQDRIVER.SYS) in high memory,
it must be placed after the Memory Manager device driver
in the CONFIG.SYS file. Also, if you have a RAMDRIVE
installed, the device driver (SQDRIVER.SYS) should be
placed after RAMDRIVE device driver in the CONFIG.SYS file,
if you want to keep the same drive letter for your RAMDRIVE.

C. About SyQuest File

The "About" utility defines SyQuest software's revision
level, date, purpose of driver, hosts, supported (HBA)
   and supported SyQuest drives.

D. Changes/New Additions

Current SQDRIVER.SYS supports the drive status
in the UNLOCK/LOCK function. Earlier revisions
display BLANK in the Status field.

E. Installation Notes:

To install the SyQuest Windows Utility software, follow
   the installation procedures:

Step 1: Insert SyQuest Windows Utility software diskette
	  in drive "A".

Step 2: From DOS prompt.

Step 2a: Type "WIN A:SETUP" then go to Step 3.

			 OR

Step 2b1: From within Window's Program Manager window select
	  "Run..." under "File" pulldown menu.

Step 2b2: At Run's dialog box, type in "A:SETUP" in the
command line box then click the "OK" button.

Step 3: An "Installation Greeting" dialog box is displayed.
Click "Continue" to start the installation.

	  SyQuest Setup installs the Unlock/
	  Format Cartridge/File Copy/Options/
	  About/ReadMe utilities onto the
DOS installed sub-directory and creates an Icon
for both the SYQUESTU.GRP and PROGMAN.INI group.

       Installation is completed.

F. SyQuest Utilities

   1. Unlock SyQuest Drives Utility

The Unlock SyQuest Drives Utility window provides the
      following functions:

A message is displayed warning against removing the
cartridge, if it contains any active Windows files.
A response is requested before continuing with the
      Unlock Operation.

All Drives: Selecting this option unlocks all the
SyQuest drives in the system. A final
warning is displayed if one of the
		    unlocked SyQuest drives contains active
		    Windows files.
Unlock Drive: Selecting this option unlocks the selected
SyQuest drive. A final warning is
displayed if the unlocked SyQuest drive
		    contains active Windows files.
      OK: Executes the selected option.
Exit: Exits the utility back to the calling
		    window.
Help: Message describing the Unlock utility.

The following briefly describes what the utility does:

The Unlock Utility allows you to "UNLOCK" (via software)
the drive volumes associated with a SyQuest Drive. If
your drive has a cartridge with a single Volume, then
a single drive letter is associated with that cartridge.
If your cartridge has multiple volumes, a drive letter
     is assigned to each volume.

When a drive volume is "Unlocked", the eject button on
the drive is enabled. Pressing this button powers down
the drive and "pops" the cartridge release lever.

For SCSI drives, if the eject button was pushed while the
cartridge was "LOCKed", the drive powers down and "pops"
the release lever as soon as the "UNLOCK" command is
     executed.

If you have a cartridge with multiple volumes, unlocking
a single volume will unlock all volumes on the cartridge.
Also, checking for removal of the cartridge is resumed on
all volumes associated with that cartridge.

If you have selected the "Auto Lock" option (i.e. the /L
switch option on the device driver SQDRIVER.SYS), the
drive will be automatically locked on first access to the
drive. If this option is not selected, then you must use
the "Lock" Utility to lock the drive.

If you have more than a single SyQuest drive installed in
your PC, each drive (volume) can be individually Unlocked.

    2. Format SyQuest Cartridge Utility

The Format SyQuest Cartridge Utility window supports
       five sub-options.

        SCSI or Parallel Port SCSI:

	Selecting this option launches "SQPREP"
program that provides DOS partitioning and
formatting functions (SCSI and Parallel Port SCSI
        drives).

	 OK: Executes the selected option.
Exit: Exits the utility back to the calling
		    window.
Help: Message describing the SyQuest Format
		    Cartridge utility.
(SCSI and Parallel Port to SCSI)

    3. SyQuest Back-up Copy Utility

The SyQuest Back-up Copy Utility launches "SCOPY" for
the users to backup their DOS files.

    4. About SyQuest Utility

The About SyQuest Utility provides information about
software release date, revision number, compatible
Hardware/Operating Systems, supported host adapters and
       drives information.

    5. SyQuest ReadMe Utility

Opens up NOTEPAD to display this file. The file can
be printed to obtain a hard copy.

    6. SyQuest Options Utility

       This Utility contains four individual SyQuest utilities;
they are Fixed Drive Utility, Removable Drive Utility,
Lock SyQuest Drive Utility and Safe Scan-Drive Utility.

Select Fixed Drive Utility radio button launches the
       "SQFIXED.EXE" utility.

Select Removable Drive Utility radio button launches the
       "SQREMOVE.EXE" utility.

Select Lock SyQuest Drive Utility radio button launches the
       "SQLOCK.EXE" utility.

Select Safe Scan-Drive Utility radio button launches the
       "SQSURF.EXE" utility.

    6.1. SyQuest Fixed Drives Utility

The SyQuest Fixed Drives Utility window provides
       the following functions:

All Drives: Selecting this option makes all the
SyQuest SCSI drives in the system as
		     Fixed drives.
Fix Drives: Selecting this option allows the user to
selectively make a SyQuest SCSI drive as
a Fixed drive (By Volume ID).
	 OK: Executes the selected option.
Exit: Exits the utility back to the calling
		     window.
Help: Message describing the SyQuest Fixed
		     Drives utility (SCSI and Parallel-SCSI).

The following briefly describes what this utility does:

DOS programs can inquire if a drive volume controlled by
the device driver is "FIXED" or "REMOVABLE". A SyQuest
device driver normally responds to this inquiry with
     "REMOVABLE".

Some DOS programs can only work with drive volumes which
are "Fixed" (i.e. they can only work with hard drives
which are "Fixed"). This utility can be used to make a
SyQuest Drive look like a "Fixed" drive.

When this utility is used to make a drive volume "Fixed",
the device driver (SQDRIVER.SYS) responds with "FIXED" to
any inquiry about the status of the drive from a DOS
     program.

Since this option hides the true identity of a SyQuest
drive, it should be used only when absolutely necessary.
It is work around to solve a compatibility problem.
The "Removable" Utility should be used as soon as possible
to reset the status to "Removable".

For cartridges with multiple volumes, each volume can be
individually made to look like a "Fixed" volume.

    6.2 SyQuest Removable Drives Utility

The SyQuest Removable Drives Utility window provides
       the following functions:

All Drives: Selecting this option makes all the
SyQuest SCSI drives in the system as
		     Removable drives.
       Removable Drives:
Selecting this option allows the user to
selectively make SyQuest SCSI drive as a
		     Removable drive (By Volume ID).
	 OK: Executes the selected option.
Exit: Exits the utility back to the calling
		     window.
Help: Message describing the SyQuest Removable
		     Drives utility (SCSI and Parallel-SCSI).

The following briefly describes what this utility does:

DOS programs can inquire if a drive volume controlled by
the device driver is "FIXED" or "REMOVABLE". The SyQuest
device driver normally responds to this inquiry with
     "REMOVABLE".

Some DOS programs can only work with drive volumes which
are "Fixed" (i.e. they can only work with hard drives
which are "Fixed"). If you have previously used the
"Fixed" Utility to make a drive volume Fixed, use this
utility to restore the drive volume back to "Removable".

For cartridges with multiple volumes, each volume can be
     individually restored to be "Removable".

    6.3 Lock SyQuest Drive Utility

The Lock Drive Utility window provides the following
       functions.

All Drives: Selecting this option locks all the
		     SyQuest drives in the system.
Lock Drives: Selecting this option allows the user to
		     selectively lock a SyQuest drive.
		     (by Volume ID)
	 OK: Executes the selected option.
Exit: Exits the utility back to the calling
		     window.
Help: Message describing the Lock utility.

The following briefly describes what the utility does:

The Lock Utility allows you to "LOCK" (via software) the
drive volumes associated with a SyQuest Drive. If your
drive has a cartridge with a single volume, then a single
drive letter is associated with that cartridge. If your
cartridge has multiple volumes, a drive letter is assigned
     to each volume.

When a drive volume is "Locked", the eject button on the
drive is disabled. Pressing this button has no effect.
The cartridge cannot be removed without first issuing a
     software "UNLOCK" command.

If you have a cartridge with multiple volumes, locking a
single volume will lock all volumes on the cartridge.
Also checking for removal of the cartridge is stopped on
all volumes associated with that cartridge.

If you have more than a single SyQuest drive installed in
your PC, each drive (volume) can be individually "Locked".

    6.4 Safe Scan-Drive Utility

The Safe Scan-Drive utility window provides the following
       functions.

Scan Drives: Selecting this option allows the user to
		     selectively Scan a SyQuest drive.
		     (by Volume ID)
	 OK: Executes the selected option.
Exit: Exits the utility back to the calling
		     window.
Help: Message describing the Safe Scan-Drive
                     utility.
Stop: Allows user to interrupt the Non-destrctive
		     surface scan test.
Reselect: Allows user to go back to main menu for
		     a drive re-selection.

The following briefly describes what the utility does:

The Safe Scan-Drive Utility allows you to "Scan" the
drive volumes associated with a SyQuest Drive.

Upon selecting a SyQuest drive and click 'OK' button,
the utility will begin by checking the Boot record,
Media Descriptor, File Allocation Table, Root Directory
sectors of the SyQuest drive and performs a Non-destrctive
surface scan of the whole volume.
Summary is displayed after each test.

G. Installation Notes, Comments and Helpful Hints

    1. Installation on Windows 3.0 creates the SYQUEST0.GRP
while Windows 3.1 creates a SYQUESTU.GRP and inserts
       into PROGMAN.INI [Groups] section.

    2. Execution "Format SyQuest Cartridge" utility under
       Windows 3.0 from a Parallel-SCSI drive will cause a
Windows' "LPT1" control warning message. The user must
choose "YES" for LPT1 control to utility to avoid
       aborting the application.

    3. The SyQuest device driver ONLY interfaces with an
uncompressed volume if DOS DBLSPACE is installed.
