Creating Projects
-----------------
The New Project dialog box contains a File Type option. Use the File Type option to specify whether the new project you are creating will be in SureTrak's own file format, or in P3 or Finest Hour file format.

Opening Projects
----------------
The Open Project dialog box contains a Read-Only checkbox. If you want to open a project read-only, check this box. When you open a project read-only, you cannot save the changes you make. You can, however, make temporary changes to analyze scheduling alternatives and to print reports. You can also save the project to a new name.

Backing Up and Restoring Projects
---------------------------------
When you back up both SureTrak and P3 projects--especially when those projects share a common project name, be sure to back them up to different diskettes or directories on a diskette.

The backup/restore program that SureTrak runs from the File menu (PRBACKUP.EXE) is also a stand-alone program that you can run separately with command-line arguments. This means you can back up or restore projects even when you aren't running SureTrak.

PRBACKUP.EXE uses ZIP compression for SureTrak projects. SureTrak project backups have a .PRX extension. If you have a project .PRX file, you can unzip it by renaming the file to an .EXE file, at which point it is a self-extracting file. For example, if the project is called VIDEO.PRX and you rename it to VIDEO.EXE, uncompress it by choosing File, Run from Program Manager and typing \[pathname]\VIDEO in the Command Line box.

To back up a SureTrak project called VIDEO to a different name on a different drive or directory, type the following in the Command Line box after choosing File, Run from File Manager:
	prbackup c:\stwin\projects\video a:\videobak 286265833

To restore a SureTrak project called VIDEOBAK to a project called VIDEONEW, type the following in the Command Line box after choosing File, Run from File Manager:
	prbackup a:\videobak c:\stwin\projects\videonew 286265769

Turning Off the Activity Form When Adding Activities
----------------------------------------------------
If you prefer to always enter activity information in a column-and-row format (the activity columns), you can disable the Activity Form such that it does not automatically appear when you add activities. To only use the activity columns for data entry, choose Configure, SureTrak and clear the checkbox next to Display Activity Form When Adding an Activity by clicking. If a check appears in this checkbox, SureTrak will open the Activity Form when you add an activity for you to enter activity information.

Tracing Logic
-------------
To trace predecessor and successor logic through a chain of activities, use the Predecessors or Successors detail windows. When you press the Ctrl key and double-click a predecessor or successor row, SureTrak selects the activity in the activity columns and moves the selection box to the related activity. For example, to determine the reason a particular activity has negative float, you can trace back through the driving predecessors to pinpoint where the negative float occurred.

Using the Resource Profile
--------------------------
The Format Resource Profile/Table dialog box has an Averaging Calendar option below the Timescale settings. When you are displaying an average profile or table for resource total or for a resource group, specify which calendar you want to use to calculate the average worktime and resource limits.

When you press the Ctrl key while you click a profile bar or table cell, SureTrak selects activities in the activity columns that contribute to that amount. If you want to add to the selection, keeping previously selected activities activities highlighted in the columns, press Ctrl + Shift while you click the bar or cell.

Outlining Projects and Topic Activities
---------------------------------------
To make outlining simpler, the default Editing Toolbar now contains the outlining and summarizing tools at the far left side of the toolbar. You can also hide the detailed activities below a topic activity by double-clicking the topic activity row; a + symbol appears next to the topic in the activity columns. Display the detailed activities double-clicking the topic row again.

There are two additional filters you can use to temporarily remove activities from view: TOPX and XTOP. Apply the TOPX filter to show only topics; apply the XTOP filter to show only detailed activities.

You can also temporarily remove topics from view using the Hide Topic Activities command on the Display menu.

Miscellaneous Default Settings
------------------------------
The following defaults have changed since the user manual was printed:

On the Format Resource Profile/Table dialog box, Total is the default method for calculating resource and cost information.

The default activity codes dictionary, TEMPLATE.TTL, has a default activity ID code setting for subprojects: SUBP; it is two characters wide.

On the Bar and Endpoint Options dialog box, the default summary bar is now a thick line with inverted "homeplate" symbols as default Summary points.

The default relationship line type is Presentation rather than Draft.

SureTrak includes an additional standard layout called RECURR.LAY; it is located in the Layouts directory. This layout is similar to the OUTLINE layout except that Reorganize Automatically is disabled. The BASIC script, RECRACTV, uses the RECURR layout in order to schedule recurring activities. See the SCRIPTS.WRI file for more information about the BASIC scripts.

When you installed SureTrak, it included the optional Tools menu option that can be turned off in the STWIN.INI file. The three menu options listed on the Tools menu are for three SureTrak BASIC scripts: Set default duration, Global change, and Recurring activities. For more information about these options, refer to the SCRIPTS.WRI file in the \STWIN directory.

Using SureTrak With P3 Projects and Subprojects
-----------------------------------------------
The P3 Schedule/Level Calculation Options dialog box includes an option to control whether scheduling and leveling can be performed at the individual subproject level. If this option is not checked, SureTrak will not be able to schedule or level a P3 subproject if it is opened with SureTrak. To allow scheduling of the subproject by SureTrak, the P3 project manager should click the Allow Scheduling and Leveling of Individual Subprojects checkbox so that it contains a checkbox.

When SureTrak opens a daily P3 project, the resource limits are divided by the number of workhours per day on the global calendar. This is because SureTrak always schedules resources in hours. When saving the project back as a P3 daily project, the resource limits are multiplied by the number of hours per day on the global calendar.

SureTrak does not support the Resource Limit Shift Tables that may exist in P3/FH hourly projects. However, SureTrak will not overwrite any shift limit tables that exist in those projects if you open them with SureTrak. If you open a project with shift limit tables and edit the resource dictionary with SureTrak, you may need to refresh the resource dictionary with P3 to restablish the limit tables. Do this by opening the project with P3 and opening the Define Resources dialog box. Click the Each Limit Has a Shift Table checkbox, close, and then and reopen the dialog box to restablish any limit tables.

Miscellaneous SureTrak Details
------------------------------
Rolling Dates are based on a 24-hour clock.

When you change an activity type from Task to Independent, all resources assigned to the activity will be made driving resources.

Series Link: The SureTrak User Manual description of the Series Link command and tool says that activities are linked in the same sequence as they appear in activity columns. If you are selecting three or more activities to link in a sequence, SureTrak relates them with finish-to-start relationships from the top to the bottom of the list. However, if you select only two activities, the second one you select (the one with the selection box around one of the cells) will be the successor. This enables you to link an activity that is lower on the activity columns as a predecessor to an activity above it.

Drag and Drop: When you are organized by activity codes, WBS, calendar, or activity priority, SureTrak changes these values when you drag an activity from one group to another. When you are organized by resources, predecessors, or successors, SureTrak adds the resource, predecessor link, or successor link, when you drag an activity from one group to another.

Printing to file: If you are printing one page per file, the extensions are *.001, *.002, etc. and not *.1A, *.1B as indicated in the printed manual.

Starting List of Holidays
-------------------------
SureTrak's global calendar includes a starting list of typical US holidays. If you want to customize this list, open the project called TEMPLATE (stored in the \STWIN directory) and modify holidays to match your projects' needs. When you save the project, SureTrak will use the new list of holidays whenever you create new projects.

If you need to update this list of holidays for an existing project, open the project and use the Transfer feature to transfer holidays from the TEMPLATE project.

Starting SureTrak with Command Line Options
-------------------------------------------
You can start SureTrak with command line options in order to perform additional operations at the time you start SureTrak. For example, you can specify a project to be opened. Specify this information on the Properties dialog box in the Command Line box following the program name (C:\STWIN\STW.EXE) or when choosing File, Run from Program Manager.

Opening Projects:
Method 1: [path]project
		example: c:\stwin\stw.exe c:\stwin\projects\video

Method 2: /P:[path]project OR /PROJECT:[path]project
		example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /P:c:\stwin\projects\video
		or, c:\stwin\stw.exe /PROJECT:c:\stwin\projects\video

Method 3: Use this method to open one of the four projects that appear on the File menu.
		/P:%number OR /PROJECT:%number
		example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /P:3
		or, c:\stwin\stw.exe /PROJECT:3

Method 4:	Use this method to open the last project you used; this is the same as using method 3 with a project number of 1.
		/P:. OR /PROJECT:.
		example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /P:.
		or, c:\stwin\stw.exe /PROJECT:.

If you don't specify a project path is not specified, SureTrak uses the Projects Directory setting in the STWIN.INI file. If the STWIN.INI Directories-Projects entry does not exist, or contains an invalid path, SureTrak uses the current directory.

Automatic Login (with P3/FH projects):
		/U:login OR /USER:login
		example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /U:username
		or, c:\stwin\stw.exe /USER:username

If the username and password are not the same, or if the username is invalid, SureTrak displays the Login dialog box. The Login command line option must precede options for opening projects that require logins. You can pair logins and projects in order to open multiple projects at once, each with different logins:
		Example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /U:username /P:\stwin\projects\video

Specifying Layouts: You can specify which layout to use when you open a project.

		/L:[path]layout OR /LAYOUT:[path]layout

You must also specify which project you want to open when you use this option: specify the project and then specify the layout.
		Example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /P:\stwin\projects\video /L:\stwin\layouts\resp

You can chain projects and layouts in order to open multiple projects at once, appplying a different layout to each one.

If you don't specify the layout path, SureTrak uses the Layouts Directory setting in the STWIN.INI. If this entry is missing or invalid, SureTrak uses the STWIN.INI Projects Directory setting. If this entry also fails, SureTrak uses the current directory. If the layout does not exist, SureTrak uses the last layout you used with the project.

Default Project Type: This option is the same as adding a default project type to the DIRECTORIES section of the STWIN.INI file. If you use this setting, it overrides the equivalent setting in the STWIN.INI file.

		/F:ID OR /FILEEXT:ID

To specify SureTrak's native file format, the ID is 0; to specify P3 format, the ID is 1; to specify FH format, the ID is 2. The following example is for creating a project in P3 format:

		c:\stwin\stw.exe /F:1

Starting Another Application When You Start SureTrak:

	Method 1:	/R:application OR /RUN:application

	Method2:	/R:"application parameters" OR /RUN:"application parameters"

Include a space between the application name and any of its command line parameters. If you provide parameters, place both the application name and the parameters between a pair of double quotes ("). The following example starts P3 at the same time you start SureTrak:

		c:\stwin\stw.exe /R:\p3win\p3progs\p3.exe

If you don't identify a path for the application, SureTrak searches your file system in the following order:

1	The current directory.

2	The Windows directory (the directory containing WIN.COM).

3	The Windows system directory (the directory containing such system
	files as GDI.EXE).

4	The directory containing the SureTrak for Windows executable file, STW.EXE.

5	The directories listed in the PATH environment variable.

6	The directories mapped in a network.

Scheduling a Project: After scheduling the specified project(s), SureTrak saves it.

Method 1:	/S:path\project OR /SCHED:path\project
		example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /S:c:\stwin\projects\video
		or, c:\stwin\stw.exe /SCHED:c:\stwin\projects\video

Method 2:	Schedules all projects opened using command line options described above.
		/S OR /SCHED
		example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /P:c:\stwin\projects\video /S

Exit SureTrak. When SureTrak encounters this command line option, SureTrak is immediately closed. Use this option in combination with automatically scheduling a project in order to schedule a project, save it, and then exit SureTrak.

		/E OR /EXIT
		example: c:\stwin\stw.exe /P:c:\stwin\projects\video /S /E

Network Installation of SureTrak
--------------------------------
When you install SureTrak on a network, SureTrak places a default STWIN.INI file in the program directory with the filename STWININI.DEF. Network administrators can customize this file using Notepad. Then, when individual users run the Workstation Setup option in the SureTrak Setup program, this file becomes the starting STWIN.INI file for the user.

Using SureTrak on a Notebook Computer
-------------------------------------
If you have difficulty seeing disabled text on your notebook computer, you can choose a darker text color for Windows to use to display disabled text. Use the Colors dialog box on the Control Panel to select a different color for disabled text.

To limit the space SureTrak requires on a notebook computer, you can selectively remove the following components from your hard disk:

Clipart directory and files (\stwin\clipart): saves 372 KB; contains clipart that you may attach to the bar chart or use in headers and footers. Use File Manager to delete the directory.

Sample projects AUTO, BILLING, BLDG, CNCT, RADIO, VIDEO (in \stwin\projects directory; do not remove the subdirectory); saves 1.73 MB. Use the SureTrak File, Delete command to delete the projects.

SureTrak animated tutorial program, directory, and files (\stwin\tutorial): saves 2.26 MB. Use File Manager to delete the directory; then use File Manager to delete STWTUTOR.EXE from the STWIN directory.

If you don't need the Primavera Draw program for creating pictures that you may attach to the bar chart or use in headers and footers, use File Manager to delete the following files: PRMDRAW.EXE, PRMDRAW.HLP, PRMDRAWD.DLL. Saves 381 KB.

If you don't need the extra documentation (.WRI files) or the Help files for SureTrak or the SBL BASIC language, use File Manager to delete the following files: CONVERT.WRI, README.TXT, SBIDLG.HLP, SBIHELP.HLP, SBL.HLP, SCREENS.HLP, SCRIPTS.WRI, STW.HLP, STWFILES.WRI, and STWINI.WRI. Saves 2.61 MB.

If you remove all of the above components, SureTrak will use approximately 6.5 MB of hard disk space.

Using SureTrak with nonEnglish and Extended Characters
------------------------------------------------------
SureTrak does not currently support the AltChar and AltGr keys found on the U.S. International and foreign keyboards. When you press the AltChar key or AltGr key and then type a character, nothing happens. To enter special characters when using the U.S. International keyboard layout or any foreign keyboard layout, you must use the left hand ALT key plus the ANSI character code (between 0 - 255).

For example, to insert the \ symbol, check the ANSI character chart, and note that \ is the character 092. Verify that the NumLock is on, then hold down the Alt key on left side of keyboard and type 092 (not 92), then release the Alt key to display \.

OLE
---
SureTrak comes with OLE 2.0 Automation, which includes the ability to access SureTrak objects using SureTrak's BASIC language. For more information about OLE 2.0 Automation, refer to the file called SCRIPTS.WRI which was installed to the \STWIN directory.

You can also embed objects from other applications that support OLE 2.0, such as VISIO or EXCEL. To embed an OLE 2.0 object, choose Edit, Insert Graphic, Picture; change the Type to All Files and select the item, such as a Word 6.0 document, using the Directories box. When you choose OK, SureTrak attaches the object to the bar chart. You can resize, move, edit, and delete the objects as described in the SureTrak User Manual.

Note: You must have applications that support OLE 2.0 to take advantage of this ability to attached OLE 2.0 objects. If you don't have any OLE 2.0 applications, you can attach bitmaps, metafiles, and PMT (Primavera Draw) files to the bar chart.
