1 Installing Explore OnNet 1.1
-------------------------------

1.1 System Requirements

To install Explore OnNet you must have:

* An IBM-compatible PC with an 80386 processor or higher

* Microsoft Windows 3.1 (or later) or Microsoft Windows for
  WorkGroups 3.11

* At least 8 Mbytes of RAM memory. (Mosaic requires 8 Mbytes,
all other programs will work with 4 Mbytes.)

* At least 7.5 Mbytes of free hard disk space for Explore OnNet
programs, and an additional 5.5 Mbytes of free hard disk space
  for Reference Desk

1.2 Installation

Refer to "Installing Explore OnNet" for complete instructions on
installing Explore OnNet on your system.

NOTE: If your PC has no previous copy of PC/TCP or OnNet networking
software, the install should go smoothly.

If you install Explore OnNet on a PC that also will be used on a LAN,
running a TCP/IP stack, you must combine the serial and LAN
configuration in AUTOEXEC.BAT and SYSTEM.INI. Make a copy of these
files before you proceed with the installation.

AUTOEXEC.BAT must be organized so that there are two mutually
exclusive sections, one which initializes for serial connections, and
one which initializes for LAN connections. Each of these sections
should copy in the correct version of SYSTEM.INI.

2 New Undocumented Features
----------------------------

2.1 Defining a Dialer SLIP Connection

When defining a SLIP connection for an Internet service provider that
returns multiple IP addresses to Dialer, follow these steps.

1. Select "Define a New Connection" from the Dialer menu.

2. For the "Step 1" dialog box, name the connection, then choose OK.

3. For the "Step 2" dialog box, select the type of modem you are
using and dialing method, then choose OK.

4. For the "Step 3" dialog box, select the port (to which your modem
is connected) and speed (modem's baud rate), then choose OK.

5. For the "Step 4" dialog box, enter the telephone number of your
Internet service provider, then choose OK.

6. For the "Step 5" dialog box, select the serial line protocol to use, and
provide the IP address of your provider. Enter the correct IP address of
the Domain Name System (DNS) server (this should be furnished by
your Internet service provider), which will be used to resolve
Internet hostnames (and domain names). When ready, choose OK.

7. For the "Step 6" dialog box, enter the username and password that
identify you to the Internet service provider, then choose OK.

8. The Dialer prompts you to specify Yes if you are ready to initiate
the connection to your Internet service. Select Yes, then choose
   OK.

9. The Dialer Simple Mode dialog box appears for this connection. Choose
Advanced mode to open a window and watch the progress of your
connection as it is being made. When the Status of the connection
changes to "Connected," and the Physical connection indicator in
the lower right-hand corner of your dialog box changes color from
gray to green, WAIT FOR THE DIALER TEACH MODE DIALOG BOXES TO
   APPEAR.

10. For the first Dialer Teach Mode dialog box, select Use My
    Username, then choose OK.

11. For the second Dialer Teach Mode dialog box, select Use My
    Password, then choose OK.

12. For the final Dialer Teach Mode dialog box, select Done, then
    choose OK.

When the connection script is complete, the following message
    appears:
               Script complete. Done.

Choose OK. The connection is ready for use.

2.2 Scrolling Through the MOSAIC Window

During retrieval of HTML documents accessed through HTTP URLs,
scrolling through the Mosaic window is possible by using the
directional keys (arrow keys, PgUp, PgDn, Home, End).

3 Known Problems
-----------------

The following problems are known for the current release of Explore
OnNet 1.1.

DIALER

On rare occasions, when disconnecting from a service
provider, the Dialer may not properly terminate its connection. It
may be necessary to restart your PC to reset the connection properly.

Some editors (such as Epsilon), when used to revise a script
generated for use in Dialer, may change characters such
as single <CR> characters into <CR><LF>. Using an editor that changes
characters will break scripts for service providers that return
character strings that contain, among others, double <CR> characters.
Use an editor that does not change the characters.

Sometimes, after you've defined one Dialer connection and have gone
on to define another connection, the following situation occurs: You
define the second connection. The Dialer Simple Mode dialog box
appears that prompts you to initiate the connection. You select Yes
and choose OK. A dialog box appears that indicates "Not Connected"
for the status of the connection. NOTE, however, that the status is
for the last connection you defined, NOT the current connection. To
resolve the situation, choose Close on the status dialog box. When
the Dialer dialog box reappears, choose Connect. The Simple Mode
dialog box indicating the status of the correct (current) connection
will appear.

FTP

When transferring large files or many files, the transfer may be very
slow or may halt. This activity may result in causing a General
Protection Fault (GPF). It may become necessary to restart Windows.

When cancelling the copying of a very large file, the cancel may take
several minutes, and sometimes the activity may result in a GPF.

If you attempt to exit from the application while it is copying files
or retrieving a directory list, the activity may result in a GPF.

After transferring several files, FTP may change to an error state,
displaying error messages. If this occurs, exit from and restart the
application.

GOPHER

If you exit from the Gopher application during a transfer by choosing
Abort from the File menu, Gopher may terminate with a General
Protection Fault (GPF). This will not have an impact on the rest of
the system; you can immediately restart Gopher and proceed.

If you start three simultanuous data transfers, but click the Home
icon or in any other way try to start a fourth connection, Gopher may
terminate with a GPF. To recover from the GPF, you may have to exit
from and restart Windows.

When aborting a transfer in progress, Gopher may terminate with a
GPF. Often, the serial connection may be
blocked; to recover, you may need to exit from Windows and reboot
your PC.

If the telephone connection is broken during a transfer, Gopher may
terminate with a GPF.

MAIL ONNET

You must define the environment variable TMP for Mail OnNet. Add the
following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

     set TMP=_temp_directory_

where _temp_directory_ is a directory into which Mail OnNet
can put temporary data. An example is:

     set TMP=C:\MAIL-ON\TMP

MOSAIC

Austin Computer's DSTN notebook PCs ship with an old Western Digital
640x480 256 color video driver. This outdated driver causes
corruption of the Mosaic display during the scrolling of 256-color
images in the Mosaic window. Updating the driver to the newer
version 2.3 resolves the problem. The new Western Digital drivers are
available from Austin Computer's electronic Bulletin Board Service
(BBS), at (512) 339-3582, in the self-extracting zip file named
WDVGAWIN.EXE.

Mosaic has the capability of being configured to start a new
application automatically, to view an image that Mosaic cannot view
itself. (This is also documented in the help file system.) Mosaic has
been preconfigured to start WGIF, the included GIF image viewer, when
a GIF file is downloaded. You can extend this capability by adding
viewers for new file types, such as JPEG, MS Word for Windows, and so
on. After starting Mosaic, choose Open URL from the File menu, then
type

     file:///C|/EXPLORE/MOSAIC/HELP/VIEWERS.HTM

where, for the drive "C" and the directory "EXPLORE," you should
substitute the drive and directory into which you have installed
Explore OnNet.

MOSAIC and WIN32S

When starting Mosaic, a dialog box may appear with one of the
following messages:

     WIN32S Error,
     W32XXX ....

This problem is caused by a version skew in the installed Win32s
subsystem. One or more of the Win32s files in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM or
WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WIN32S directories had "read-only" file protection,
and Explore OnNet's installation program could not update them. The
simplest solution is to make sure that there are NO read-only files
in these two directories. First, relocate to each of these
directories and run the following command:

ATTRIB -R *.*

Afterwards, reinstall Explore OnNet.

When starting Mosaic, a dialog box may appear to display the message

     GROWSTUB
An error has occurred in your application.
     ....
     ....

The growstub problem is due to a bug in some versions of the Windows
mouse driver (\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MOUSE.DRV) on some systems. To work
around this problem, remove the POINTER.EXE argument from the LOAD=
line in the \WINDOWS\WIN.INI file. For example, change

     [windows]
     load=c:\windows\system\pointer.exe
to
     [windows]
     load=

4 Other Issues
---------------

ALL APPLICATIONS

You must reference hosts using their full host and domain names. For
example, to enter the full name of a machine whose host name is
"chocolate" and whose domain name is "xyz.com," type:

     chocolate.xyz.com

Do NOT type only the host name:

     chocolate

Otherwise, the following message may appear:

     Could not resolve hostname.

In addition, make certain that you obtain a Domain Name System (DNS)
server's IP address from your Internet service provider, so that the
hostnames and domain names that you enter will be recognized by the
provider. When defining a connection to your Internet service
provider, enter the DNS server's IP address where you are prompted to
do so.

DIALER

To minimize Internet connection and telephone line usage
expenses, make certain that you disconnect from the network if you
are not using its applications and services. Dialer does not
disconnect a network connection without being directed to do so.

Some Internet service providers furnish several IP addresses in
response to the Dialer's attempt to establish a SLIP connection. As you
are using Dialer to define a connection, and Dialer is in Teach mode,
Dialer will display all of the IP addresses it receives as choices.
You must choose the correct IP address. Refer to the subscription
information from your Internet service provider to be certain that
you select the correct address.

FTP and TNVT

You can use the Beyond Books menu selection in Reference Desk to
launch a predefined FTP or TNVT session. Use the -S session_name
command line option, where session_name is the name of your
predefined FTP or TNVT session, when you specify how to launch
WFTP.EXE or WTNVT.EXE from the Beyond Books menu. For example, if the
following line appears in your \WINDOWS\VIEWER.INI file:

[Reference Desk]
BeyondBooks5=&FTP, wftp.exe

the Windows FTP application appears as a selection of the
Beyond Books menu in Reference Desk. You can change the line to

[Reference Desk]
BeyondBooks5=&FTP, wftp.exe -S paris

so that each time you select "FTP" from the Beyond Books menu, you
will launch Windows FTP with a predefined FTP session that you have
named "paris."

For information about the command line options supported by FTP and
TNVT applications, or for information about Reference Desk, see
"Using Explore OnNet" and the application's online help.

5 Explore OnNet and the FTP Client
-----------------------------------

5.1 Note Concerning File Transfers

When you transfer files with the FTP application, a copy progress bar
shows the percentage of files transferred. If you transfer files
larger than 6.3 Mbytes, the percentage increments correctly and the
file is transferred, but the black bar disappears. Later, the display
of the percentage incremented starts over again at the far left of
the bar frame.

5.2 Using a Command File

The FTP application does not support using a command file as
documented in the online help for the FTP application. This
application does not contain the Run Command File entry on the
Command menu.

6 Other Important Information
-----------------------------

6.1 If You Already Have Win32s Installed

Mosaic is a 32-bit Windows application that requires Win32s to be
installed. If you have an older version of Win32s installed, (the new
version is 1.15.111.0), make certain that no Win32s components in the
WINDOWS\SYSTEM and WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WIN32S directories are protected as
"read only." To make certain, go to each directory and enter the
following command:

ATTRIB -R *.*

There should be no "read only" components in either directory.

6.2 Configuring Mail OnNet

Before you can use Mail OnNet, you MUST use the Mail OnNet messaging
subsystem utility to configure the application. You can find the
messaging subsystem on the Windows Control Panel.

To learn how to configure and use Mail OnNet, see the "Mail OnNet
User's Guide" and Mail OnNet online help.
