                    DELPHI INSTALLATION NOTES

Please read this file in its entirety before installing this
field test release of Delphi. When you've completed the
installation, make sure you review README.TXT. The printed
documentation and the README assume you have installed Delphi
using the default directory structure. Note that this pre-release
installation program is still under development and all issues
will be resolved in the next release.

IF YOU HAVE A PREVIOUS RELEASE OF DELPHI
----------------------------------------
If you have a previous field test of Delphi, we suggest that you
archive it and remove it from your system before installing this
new release. Do not install this version into the same directory
tree structure as the previous one. Once you've installed, refer
your cover letter for information on updating your existing
projects to work with this latest release.

RUN SETUP
---------
To install Delphi, run the setup program (SETUP.EXE) found on the
CD in the directory DELPHI\DISK1\. The installation process
requires at least 3Mb of free disk space in your Windows
temporary directory and at least 27Mb of free disk space. A
complete installation of the Client/Server Edition requires 65Mb.

o Borland Database Engine

Delphi installs a new version of the Borland Database Engine
(BDE, also known as IDAPI). Though this pre-release version of
BDE has been certified with other Borland products such as
Paradox or dBASE for Windows, we recommend that you back up
your existing IDAPI directory before installing Delphi.

o Using Oracle

Install places both ORA6WIN.DLL and ORA7WIN.DLL in your IDAPI
directory. Remove the one you DON'T use or your system may not
correctly access data from your Oracle server.

o ODBC Connectivity

This release of Delphi has been certified with Microsoft's 2.0
ODBC Driver Manager. If you have a different version of the
ODBC Driver Manager, back up your existing ODBC.DLL and
ODBCINST.DLL files. Next, copy the ODBC.NEW and ODBCINST.NEW
files from your \DELPHI\IDAPI directory into your existing ODBC
directory (by default this is \WINDOWS\SYSTEM). Finally, rename
them to ODBC.DLL and ODBCINST.DLL. Note that the ReportSmith
installation process does this for you automatically.

o Miscellaneous
o ReportSmith - To complete the ReportSmith installation, copy
    RS_DFW.DLL and RS_DATAD.DLL from \RPTSMITH to the \RS_RUN
directory. In addition, copy RS_SQLIF.INI from \RPTSMITH to
    \WINDOWS.
o IBLOCAL Alias - If you install InterBase to any directory
other than the default, run BDECFG.EXE and modify the IBLOCAL
    alias' path accordingly.
o Disk size estimates - The disk size estimates offered by
    INSTALL are not accurate.
o SQL Links Directory - If you install SQL Links to a different
directory than the IDAPI directory, update the DLLPath
    setting in WIN.INI accordingly.
o The InterBase environment variable is added to the bottom of
AUTOEXEC.BAT. If your AUTOEXEC.BAT runs Windows, make sure
this is done after the InterBase environment variable is set.
o InterBase Message File - We recommend that you accept the
default location for this file. It's also used for the
password database which is always installed in the IBLOCAL
    directory.
o If you have SETUP rename your existing WINSOCK.DLL but do not
yet have JSB's TCP/IP and you experience trouble connecting
to remote databases, restore your previous WINSOCK by
    renaming C:\WINDOWS\WINSOCK.BOR to WINSOCK.DLL.
o If you have installed Novell LanWorkPlace patch ID LWP42T, do
not select TCP/IP protocol during the installation process
and your existing TCP/IP setup will work correctly.
