  NATURAL WINDOWS Version 2.1.1 pl 8.1 28 Jun 1994
============================================================================
Maintenance release to update V2.1.1.8 December 93
============================================================================

Prerequisites

--------------

You must have a PC with an INTEL processor 80386 or 80486
with a speed of at least 20 MHz and 8MB of RAM. DOS 3.3
or higher and Windows 3.1 must be installed.

Installation

-------------

   1) Start MS-Windows 3.1.

   2) Insert the first installation diskette into your
   diskette drive.

   3) Choose the Program Manager's File menu and select
the Run command. At the prompt type 'x:\setup', where x
is the drive letter of the diskette drive with the
installation diskette (i.e. a: or b:). This starts the
installation process. The installation is self-
   explanatory.

   4) After the installation procedure is finished: If
the environment variables PATH, NATDIR, NATVERS,
NATGUI_BMP, and DBENV are not already set correctly from
a previous installation, exit Windows and reboot (or set
the variables by hand). Start NATURAL by using the icon
in the NATURAL group of the Program Manager, or by typing
NATURAL at the Program Manager's Run command prompt.

   5) This readme.txt file will be copied to the directory
specified by NATDIR during the installation process.

Corrections / Additions to the Release Notes

--------------------------------------------

Number of Installation Diskettes

The NATURAL for Windows installation package consists of
   six 3.5" diskettes.

Installation from Network drive

Besides installing from separate diskettes you can install
Natural for Windows from a network drive. This is
more convenient especially for multiple installations.
To do this, copy all installation diskettes into one
directory on your network server and start 'setup' in
   this directory.

Installation with Network Windows

If Windows has been started from a network drive, ensure
that the network directory from which Windows was started
is not write-protected. Otherwise, the installation
   procedure may not work properly.

Installation Environment

During installation, several environment variables are
temporarily created. If problems are encountered during
installation, increase the size of your DOS environment.
Refer to your DOS Reference Manual for details.

Deletion of existing Natural Installations

If you choose to reinstall the component "NATURAL for Windows"
all subdirectories under NATDIR\NATVERS are deleted before
reinstallation. Warning: INI and parameter files are lost.
This is necessary to insure consistency of the version and to
   remove any unwanted files.
If you choose to reinstall one of the other components,
reinstallation is performed without deleting existing
files. E.g. if you modified existing example programs
modifications are lost. If you write additional programs
   these are kept.

Program names

The names of the programs to execute have changed. If you choose
not to have a program manager group built by the installation
process but rather want to reuse an existing group from a
previous installation be aware that you will need to change the
command lines of the respective items to reflect the new names.

   NATURAL - natural.exe
   NATPARM Utility - natparm.exe
   ADABAS Utilities - adautl.exe
   ADABAS - adamain.exe

Please do not start any other executable (*.exe) files from the
NATURAL binary directory (such as nde.exe, ddmgenw.exe, etc...).
It may seem that these programs work but serious errors can
occur. All necessary functionality can be achieved using the
   above executable files.

Installation Option

The installation option: 'Cleanup Path' which is documented in
the installation guide has been removed from the installation
   program.

NATPARM Installation

If NATURAL for Windows had previously been installed the
installation process will make a copy of an existing
NATPARM.SAG. The backup copy will be named NATPARM.BAK and
will be written to the same directory as the new NATPARM.SAG
   file.

Release Notes

The example on page 15 of the Release Notes contains an error:
The message 0025E must be contained in one line.

ADABAS Database Modes

The ADABAS version included with this product supports
standalone databases only. Therefore, in dialogs
radio buttons for selecting the fileserver or standalone
   mode are disabled.

The following database types are supported by NATURAL for
Windows and must be set appropriately in the global
configuration file using the NATPARM utility:

ADX - Local ADABAS for Windows
ADA - Remote ADABAS on any other platform (e.g. UNIX)
DBM - Data Base Manager (OS/2)
   DB2 - DB2 on Mainframe Computers
OSQ - Any SQL data base system

Be sure to set the values appropriately whenever a new data
base is used for the first time. Otherwise, data base access
   will not work properly.

Loading/Unloading Databases

When loading or unloading database files, if no path
specification is included in the filename, the value of
the DBENV environment variable is taken as default path.
If the file format ADABAS or NATCONN-PC is selected, the
file extension is 'adf' or 'ncd', respectively, a
   different extension is not allowed.

In some cases, loading and unloading of data in NATURAL
Connection format does not work properly. Try other formats
   if you experience problems.

Saving Database Listings

When saving a database report or a file list to a text
file, you may specify a path with the file name. If no path
is specified the file is written to the directory
specified as NATURAL TMP Directory in the local
   installation assignments in NATPARM.

Numerical Data Formats in FDTs

When editing FDTs, decimal points are not accepted in the
numeric field widths, even if 'format type NATURAL' was
selected in the Options dialog. ADABAS stores numeric
values as a given number of digits with no regard to a
decimal point. Interpretation of such an ADABAS field
from NATURAL is based on the DDM used to access the
database file, therefore decimal points for database file
   descriptions are irrelevant.

Multiple Data Bases

It is not possible to start more than one local ADABAS for
Windows data base at a time.

LFILE with different types of ADABAS data bases

Usage of LFILES with one LFILE being of type ADX and the other
of type ADA is not supported.

Imported NATPARM Files

Please be aware that not all parameters of the NATPARM utility
that can be set in other environments (e.g. NATURAL for UNIX)
are available in NATURAL for Windows. Particularly, parameter
files from previous installations of NATURAL for OS/2 may not
work properly when used with NATURAL for Windows.

NATURAL Object Type Text

The NATURAL object type text (T) is supported. It can be used
to write any ASCII text and maintain it within a NATURAL library.

Data Area Limit

The Data Area Editor can handle a maximum of 713 lines.
If this number is exceeded, a General Protection Fault
may occur. This problem will be addressed in a future
   release.

Array Definitions in the Map Editor

Splitting arrays into multiple parts is currently not
supported by the Map Editor (i.e. there cannot be two
arrays with the same name and non-overlapping bounds, as
   is possible on the mainframe).

Interleaving arrays are supported (the Release Notes
   state otherwise).

The MAP Editor does not currently support the creation of
arrays of toggle buttons or radio buttons.

Blank Filler Characters

The Map Editor uses the blank character as a default
filler character in the attribute definitions. When
editing an input field which is padded with blanks to its
maximum length, it may appear as if the text cannot be
edited. In such cases, the blanks must be explicitly
deleted from the end of the field.

SET KEY Statements and GUI Elements

If GUI elements in maps are assigned to PF-keys (bitmaps,
push buttons or menu items), the map will contain SET KEY
statements to that effect. This means that any SET KEY
statements for these PF-keys outside of the map are
inactive while the map is executed.

Array elements for Radiobutton Labels

The use of array elements as labels of radiobuttons does
not work properly. You will need to use scalar variables
   instead.

Initialization of Control Variables

Using single value initialization for control variables
in a data area, be sure to use proper syntax. Wrong
syntax will in some cases lead to errand data areas
and possibly cause NATURAL to abort.

PF-Keys

Certain function keys are not available on the keyboard. They
can be accessed via PF-Key buttons on the output window or when
assigned to GUI elements such as push buttons. They can also be
   emulated by pressing key-combinations:

   PF13-PF24 by pressing Shift+PF1-PF12
   PF25-PF36 by pressing Shift+Ctrl+PF1-PF12
   PF37-PF48 by pressing Ctrl+PF1-PF12

RUN REPEAT Command

The RUN REPEAT command is not supported.

Terminal Commands

As stated in the Release Notes, terminal commands can
only be issued from within a program using the SET
CONTROL statement. Note: the equivalent of the
mainframe '%%' command (interrupting the application) is
achieved by pressing the Escape key.

Window Processing Terminal Command

The SET CONTROL 'W' statement produces a new window only
if there has been a previous INPUT statement. If this
statement is to be the first in a program, an additional
INPUT statement in non-conversational mode must precede
   the SET CONTROL 'W' statement.

Window Title

It is now possible to set the title of any window created
by NATURAL. Use the subprogram USR0500N in library SYSEXT
to turn the title on and off and to set the current title
string. The first parameter determines whether the title
is to be turned on (TRUE) or off (FALSE), the second
parameter gives the new title (maximum length: 50 characters).
See example USR0500P for more details.

Application Icon

Whenever the NATURAL output window is being minimized an
icon will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. To
customize this icon to your needs you need to produce an
iconfile (*.ico) and store it in the directory pointed
to by the environment variable NATGUI_BMP. To use the icon
   file issue the statement:
   SET CONTROL 'I=iconfile.ICO'

Example Application

An example application highlighting the features of
NATURAL is provided in library SYSEXGUI. Execute program
   MENU to start the example.
