      STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE
                      CAN'T FIND STACVOL FILE; DELETED
(Applies to Stacker for OS/2 & DOS ver 4)

      BACKGROUND

When Setup creates a Stacker drive, it makes a file called
STACVOL.DSK and adds that file to the Stacker initialization
files (STACKER.INI in DOS and STACOS2.INI in OS/2). Every time
your system starts, the appropriate INI file is processed. The
system reads each file and looks for the STACVOL file on the
      drive specified.
For example, if you compressed your C and D drives, the lines in
the INI files would look like:
            D:\STACVOL.DSK,SW
            C:\STACVOL.DSK,SW
Under either OS/2 or DOS, Stacker looks for a file called
STACVOL.DSK in the root directory of drive D. Then it looks for
the file STACVOL.DSK in the root directory of drive C. If either
file doesn't exist, Stacker tells you it can't find the STACVOL
      file, and hasn't "mounted" it.
If you deleted STACVOL.DSK or any file called STACVOL with a
numeric extension, you must undelete the file. If you didn't
write anything to the disk since deleting the file, then an
undelete utility MAY be able to recover the file. Stacker also
has a utility that attempts to recover a deleted STACVOL file.
The utility works only if you did not write or copy anything to
the uncompressed drive after deleting the file.

      SOLUTION

       1. Start your system into DOS. If you do not have DOS on your
system, you may use Stacker Disk 1 as a startable DOS disk.
       2. Insert Stacker Disk 2 into its drive. Go to that drive and
           type:
           \TECH\REPAIR /R d:\STACVOL.xxx <Enter>
where d: is the drive where you deleted the STACVOL file.
STACVOL.xxx is the name of the STACVOL file you deleted.
Most likely it is STACVOL.DSK. It may be STACVOL.000.
       3. If the file is recoverable, then repair will successfully
recover it. If any part of the file was overwritten, you
will get an error message `cluster already in use'. If that
is the case, there is no way to recover the file.
       4. If the file is successfully recovered, take the Stacker for
OS/2 & DOS disk out of drive A and restart your computer
           normally.
Your Stacker drive should be up and running. To make sure
everything is OK on the drive, you should run the Stacker
utility CHECK /F on the drive.
