                         NOT A STACKER STACVOL FILE

      BACKGROUND

This document addresses the error messages:
      - Not a Stacker Stacvol file-NOT MOUNTED
      - Invalid # reserved sectors (must be one) - NOT MOUNTED

Each Stacker drive is actually a STACVOL.xxx file that is stored
on the uncompressed drive. This file consists of a header that
contains control information about how and where your data is
stored, and a data area that contains all of your compressed
data. If you receive one of the messages above, the header is
damaged. However, Stacker saves a copy of the header for each
Stacker drive. You may use this saved header to restore your
      STACVOL file.

      SOLUTION

                               IMPORTANT
Do not use these procedures if you have run SDEFRAG (the Stacker
Optimizer), and you have neither run CHECK nor successfully
restarted your computer afterwards. Contact Stac Product Support
      for assistance in this case.

      Restore the header

These procedures assume that the damaged drive is drive C. If the
error is occurring on another drive, substitute that drive letter
      for C.
       1. Boot your system into DOS. If you do not have DOS on your
system, use Stacker Disk # 1 as a startup disk.
       2. You must clear the system, hidden, and read-only attributes
from the STACVOL file. Place your Stacker Disk # 1 in drive
A or B, go to that drive, and type:
           SATTRIB -S -H -R C:\STACVOL.* <enter>
       3. Type DIR C:\STACVOL.*. Note the full spelling of the STACVOL
file name. It is probably STACVOL.DSK.
       4. Insert Stacker Disk # 2. Type:
           \TECH\REPAIR /F C:\STACVOL.xxx <enter>
where STACVOL.xxx is the file name you noted above.
       5. Remove all disks from the floppy drives and restart your
           computer.
