INSTALLING OS/2 WARP ON A COMPRESSED DRIVE
(Applies to Stacker 4.0 for OS/2 & DOS)

      -----------------------------------------------------------------

      BACKGROUND

To install OS/2 on a drive already compressed by Stacker, use the
PREPINST, MIDINST and POSTINST programs supplied with Stacker for
      OS/2 & DOS.

      SOLUTION

       - Check the free space required.
       - Install OS/2 Warp.

      Check the free space required

       1. Make sure there is enough uncompressed space to hold
           necessary OS/2 startup files.
           a. Get to a DOS prompt and change to the STACKER directory.
           Type:
           SWAPMAP <Enter>
Locate the drive you wish to compress. It may look something
           like this:

           Drive C: was drive E: at boot time [ E:\STACVOL.DSK = 42.7
           MB (physical) ]
Note the drive letter in brackets. In this example the
           uncompressed drive is E.

           b. Based on the amount of RAM in your system you will need
anywhere from 9 MB to 17 MB free on the uncompressed drive
(E in our example). See the table below for space needed.

                        Free Space Requirements
             ___________________________________________
             Is OS/2 | Available RAM
             on System? | < 8 MB | 8 - 12 MB | > 12 MB
             -----------|--------|------------|---------
                Yes | 13 MB | 11 MB | 9 MB
                No | 17 MB | 15 MB | 13 MB
             -------------------------------------------

       2. If the bytes free on the uncompressed drive (drive E in this
example) are less than needed, tell Stacker to make more
uncompressed space. Start the system into DOS.
       3. Type RESIZE d: <Enter>
where d: is the Stacker drive where you will install OS/2 (C
           in our example).
       4. Choose to "Make more uncompressed space."
       5. When RESIZE asks how much space to make uncompressed, it
will present a range to you. Add the amount you determined
above to the lower number in the range. Type the result in
           the field. Then press Enter.
       6. Choose the option, "Perform the Modifications." Then press
           Enter.

      Install OS/2 Warp

Please read these instructions through before proceeding.
                                  *Important*
This procedure differs from what OS/2 tells you to do in three
places: at the beginning (where you use PREPINST), at the middle
(where you use MIDINST), and at the end (where you use POSTINST).
If you don't follow these steps, OS/2 won't install properly.

       1. Run Stacker's CHECK program to make sure the drive is in
good condition. Also run SCHKDSK if you have an older
version of OS/2 already on the system. See the Stacker 4.0
           for OS/2 & DOS User's Guide Chapter 5, "Diagnosing &
Repairing Stacker Drives," for details on running these
           programs.
       2. Use DISKCOPY to make a copy of the OS/2 disk that contains
CONFIG.SYS. This is usually the second OS/2 floppy disk
labeled "Diskette 1". Label the copy "OS/2 Diskette 1 -
           Stacker". Put the original away.
       3. Restart your system with Stacker 4.0 for OS/2 & DOS Disk 1.
If the Stacker drive where you wish to install OS/2 is not
available, type CONFIG <enter> at the A prompt. Answer "yes"
to the questions asked, and restart your system with the
           diskette still in the drive.
       4. Insert the Stacker for OS/2 & DOS disk 2 in drive A and
           type:
           PREPINST hdrive: [wdrive:] fdrive: <Enter>
where hdrive is the compressed drive where you will install
OS/2. Wdrive is the drive letter where Windows is installed,
if different from hdrive. And fdrive is the floppy drive
where you will insert the OS/2 floppy disks. In our example,
to install OS/2 to drive C from drive A, type:
           PREPINST C: A: <Enter>
Note: If you are installing OS/2 from CD-ROM, the last
           letter must be A:.
       5. When PREPINST prompts you to insert OS/2 Diskette 1, insert
the one you labeled OS/2 Diskette 1-Stacker.
       6. When prompted to insert the OS/2 Diskette containing
SYSINSTX.COM, insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette in drive
           A. PREPINST will not modify this diskette.
       7. When you return to the A prompt, leave the Installation
Diskette in its drive and restart the computer.
       8. Follow the OS/2 installation Instructions. When OS/2 tells
you to insert OS/2 Diskette 1, insert the one you labeled
           OS/2 Diskette 1-Stacker.
                                  *IMPORTANT*
OS/2 will offer to format the partition. Don't let it. This is a
                               Stacker drive.

       9. OS/2 will ask for several diskettes, or will copy files from
the CD-ROM. When OS/2 asks you to insert the Installation
disk, insert the original OS/2 Installation Diskette.
       10. When prompted for Diskette 1, insert the disk you copied and
labeled "OS/2 Diskette 1-Stacker." When you are prompted to
press ENTER, DON'T DO IT! Press F3 instead to get to a
           command prompt.
       11. At the prompt, insert the Stacker 4.0 for OS/2 & DOS Disk 2
           in drive A and type:
           A:MIDINST <Enter>
The Stacker program MIDINST.EXE will copy files that are
           needed on the uncompressed drive.
       12. When the A prompt returns, type EXIT <enter>. This will
return you to the installation desktop. Then remove the
floppy disk and press ENTER to restart your computer. Again,
           follow the instructions from OS/2.
       13. At the end of the installation process, you will be prompted
to remove the last disk and press ENTER. (If you are
installing from CD-ROM, you will told the installation is
complete, and will be prompted to press ENTER to restart
your system.) DON'T PRESS ENTER YET! Get to a command prompt
           instead, like this:
           a. Double-click on the OS/2 System Folder icon.
           b. Double-click on the Command Prompts folder icon.
           c. Double-click on the OS/2 Full Screen icon.
       14. Change to the STACKER directory and type:
           POSTINST <enter>
The POSTINST program will synchronize files that are needed
           on the uncompressed drive.
       15. Type EXIT to return to the desktop.
       16. Press ENTER to restart the system when prompted.
       17. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL when prompted.

OS/2 is now installed. If you wish to install OS/2 on any other
Stacker drives, you must follow these same procedures again.
