      BACKGROUND

When the Stacker device driver has been loaded in the CONFIG.SYS
file of the boot drive, you can access Stacker drives. If you
start your system from the OS/2 Installation Disk and Disk 1, you
will not be able to access any of the data on the Stacker drives.
The data is still safe in its STACVOL file, however.

Stacker for OS/2 & DOS includes a utility that helps you create a
Stacker-aware OS/2 boot disk. STACBOOT.EXE will insert the proper
entries in the CONFIG.SYS file of an OS/2 Disk 1.

      SOLUTION

Since you do not want a program to write to your OS/2
distribution disks, use DISKCOPY to first make a copy of your
      OS/2 Disk 1. Label the copied disk "OS/2 Disk 1 Stacker-aware."

After you have a copy of OS/2 Disk 1, perform the following
      steps:

       1. Open a DOS session, or start your system into DOS.
       2. Change to the drive and directory where you installed the
Stacker files. If you setup Stacker on drive C, go to the
           C:\STACKER directory.
       3. Type:
           STACBOOT <Enter>
       4. You will be shown a list of drives and asked which ones you
want to compress. Type the letters of the drives you want to
compress. If you already compressed your drives, type the
letters of the compressed drives. Then press ENTER.
       5. You will then be asked which drive you will install Stacker
for OS/2 & DOS on. If you already installed the software,
enter the drive letter where you installed Stacker. (The
default is the OS/2 boot drive.)
       6. The next prompt asks you to enter the path where Stacker for
OS/2 & DOS is located. Type that path. Note that the default
           path is \STACKER.
           Then press ENTER.
You will then have a set of Stacker-aware OS/2 boot disks.
